Starting Thursday May 12th 12:00 thru Sunday May 15th 12:00 1994 there
will be 3_day lasting event for the fifth time in a row in the village
of Groesbeek, 10 miles from the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands where
the Digital ESSC is located. Since we had 4 Ascension Days before with
excellent weather we do regard this as a tradition! Because this will
be our first lustrum we are planning an enhanced weekend (more & well
known groups and some international flavour).
80 diatonic melodeon players will have a 3_day course 'how to play a
2_row melodeon' (C/F & G/C) and there will be at least 8 teachers;
amongst them several from abroad. For you, NOTES_file readers most of
them are from abroad! The levels vary from 'never played before' thru
'master of diatonic melodeon'. Irish, french, quebecqoise, frisian,
swedish, german, all kinds of (folk)music will be covered. Players will
receive copies of the music that will be taught in the various groups
upon the end of the event which could reach 35 songs.
You won't need any knowledge of how to read music because there is
a quite simple and effective system which can be learned within 15
minutes. Typical brands of the instruments we play: Hohner, Castagnari,
Saltarelle.
There will be camping_accomodation, 3 full meals a day, outings in
the vicinity for the non_players (the German Reichswald and unique
swamps), evening programs with traditional music and all days there
will be Belgian White Beer. For the connaisseurs amongst you: draft
Hoegaarden and the bar will hardly have closing hours. Workshop hours:
09:00-17:00, evening program 20:00-23:00 and some like the social hours
(23:00-04:00) after the official program the best hours where people
have a lot of fun and some melodeon players get 'The Spirit' and play
reels, scottisches & polkas that other people never heared before.
Children will have the choice of playing in special childrengroups or
being entertained all day with games.
Fee for the 3 days will be Dfl 120 which is approx. $ 60 for the adults
which will cover all expenses with exeption of course of the beer!
For those hesitating whether to join us during our melodeonweekend
here's some additional information to convince you it's worthwhile.
Groesbeek
---------
In September 1944 this was the place where Operation Market Garden
started. The american general Gavin grounded here with his airborne
troops and after the liberation of the village you could oversee
Groesbeek, standing on a chair! The former UN Secretary General
Lord Carrington was the first allied commanding officer who crossed
the river Waal in Nijmegen. Crossing the next bridge over the river
Rhine failed (the Arnhem disaster with British airborne troops).
The american soldiers went east to Germany and after a week the
German Reichswald became the first forest without trees. For those
interested in WWII there is a lot to see. Since a couple of years
Groesbeek has it's own Liberation Museum in the shape of a parachute.
Groesbeek is the most musical village in The Netherlands; some 50
different groups can be found.
Nijmegen
--------
An 1000_year old university city where Karl Marx's mother was born. A
beautiful 600_year old church and several pubs you should have visited
amongst many others 't Pumpke where they do have 150 different beers
(of course draft Guinness). A small brewery with museum that can be
visited with an owner without fantasy (one of his beers is called Anni-
versary beer and is only being sold on his birthday, another is called
Number 12 and was his twelfth attempt to brew an excellent beer).
Woarum Nie
----------
Is the Groesbeek version from Waarom Niet and means Why Not. We are the
largest Dutch club playing diatonic melodeon.
People who are interested can contact Ben Brugman, VAXmail JGO::BRUGMAN
or All_in_1 JGO::BRUGMAN. Not having an instrument or tent won't be a
problem since I will be more than happy to deal with creative solutions.
Arrangements how to reach Groesbeek and/or extend your visit can be dis-
cussed and I will be delighted to help you plan additional activities.
On behalf of the 'trekzakvereniging Woarum Nie'
