556.0. "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" by QRYCHE::STARR (Beauty and Sadness) Thu Nov 18 1993 10:59

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have just released a 'Greatest Hits' package
for the Christmas season. I haven't seen a track listing yet (is it in the
stores yet?), but I've heard the obligatory previously-unreleased song
"Mary Jane's Last Dance". (I'm not positive, but isn't this a cover of a
Jayhawks song?)

Also earlier this year, they finally re-released the first couple TP&H
albums. Supposedly the first issues were pretty awful sounding; Tom went
and bought the masters from Backstreet Records (or whoever holds the
rights now) and remastered them.

For my money, his later material just doesn't match his early stuff, which
is just brilliant. "TP&H", "You're Gonna Get It" and "Damn The Torpedoes"
were all very strong albums, with great songs like "Here Comes My Girl",
"Even The Losers", "Refugee", "Breakdown", and especially "American Girl"
and "Listen To Her Heart".

The Heartbreakers are a very tight band with a ton of talent, and they
tend to be unjustly ignored in Tom's shadow. Although you do get to hear
Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench of keys on a lot of albums
by other artists, as studio musicians.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are one my all time favorite groups.
I've seen them in concert 9 times since 1980, which is more times than
I've ever seen any other group or performer. And, I'd see them tonight
if they were playing nearby and I could get tickets!

Although I've liked all of their albums, including Tom's solo album, my
two favorite Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers albums are still Damn The
Torpedoes and Long After Dark. I, also, love the albums Southern
Accents and Let Me Up I've Had Enough.

I think Tom Petty has written some of the most interesting lyrics in
rock'n'roll, too. One of my all-time favorite songs is "You Got Lucky"
from The Long After Dark album. I, also, think their video of "Don't
Come Round Here No More" is one of the all-time best rock videos.

They put on fantastic live shows filled with energy. It's been over
two years now since I've seen them live, and I'm long overdue for a Tom
    Petty concert.

I, also, think Mike Campbell is an excellent guitarist, and Benmont
    Tench a fantastic piano player.

re .4, you got it, Dave! :-) "Skinny and has all his hair" is very big
    with me. :-)

Actually, I know I'm being baited, but.... :-)

I think Tom Petty is very attractive and has a lot of charisma.

I love that blonde hair, and I like the way he dresses. I used to like
it when he wore the coat with long tails, and the hat. Very cool.

Also, he has a nice smile and a great personality on stage, and a good
    sense of humor.

Also, and this is really true, and I think kinda funny. I have had
a lot of dreams about Tom Petty over the past 10 or 12 yrs. I've had
this one dream several times where I start talking to this guy in a
long line at a McDonald's, and I realize that he looks just like Tom
Petty, so I tell him this, and then he tells me he *is* Tom Petty. I
don't believe him, so he shows me his license and it really is him, and
the dream goes on from there. Sometimes I've said to my daughter or
one of my close friends, "I had another Tom Petty dream last night."
and then say, "Oh, no! Again?" It really is weird. I don't know why
my subconcious always picks Tom from all the rock stars I like.

Just to chime in... I'm a reasonably big Petty fan, too. Have a
special soft spot for him in my heart on accounta he's a Gainesville
(FL) boy, and I have family there who I visit about twice a year.

I only own "Damn The Torpedoes" and "Full Moon Fever," both of which
are excellent works. Looking forward to rounding out the collection
based on some of the recommendations given earlier.

    Favorite song : "Louisiana Rain"

In case anyone's interested, the tracks on the TP&H Greatest Hits (released
Nov 16 are:

American Girl
Breakdown
Listen to Her Heart
I Need to Know
Refugee
Don't Do Me Like That
Even the Losers
Here Comes My Girl
The Waiting
You Got Lucky
Don't Come Around Here No More
I Won't Back Down
Running Down a Dream
Free Fallin
Learning to Fly
Into the Great Wide Open
Mary Jane's Last Dance
Something In the Air

All but the last track were written by Petty (some co-written).
The last track sound vaguely familiar so it might be a cover but I am
not sure, it is written by some guy named John.
And interestingly the two new songs were not co-produced by Jeff Lynne,
but rather Rick Rubin.

Probably the old Thunderclap Newman tune, written by John "Speedy"
    Keen.

I always thought that "Something in the Air" was
originally done by Flo and Eddie (The Turtles ?).
It certainly *sounds* like them...

I just saw the new video for "Mary Jane's Last Dance" on MTV last night.
Sick humor. TP goes to the morgue and takes Mary out (played by Kim Basinger)
and sets her lifeless body in front of the tv, then dresses her up for dinner
and then of course dances with her. Then he goes out his back door and dumps
her body into the ocean. I like Tom Petty and all, but thought this was kind
of beyond the limits of good taste.

Sounds pretty creepy. As a weak defense, maybe it was metaphorical, even
allegorical. (or maybe just abhorical.)

What happend to Stan Lynch, the drummer? I saw a Petty interview on
MTV a week or so ago and he mentioned something about Stan and I didn't
understand it, and then on Saturday Night Live last saturday the
drummer from Nirvana (I think it was him) played with the
Heartbreakers. Is he like dead or did he just split?

I read somewhere recently, that Stan Lynch had left after a
disagreement of some sort with TP. The drummer from Nirvana (who's name
I can't remember either) was going to play a gig or two with TP to
see how he fitted in, if it works then he'll become TP's drummer
full-time. What wasn't clear though, was whether he'll just be drumming
for TP on the solo stuff, or whether it means the Heartbreakers stuff
    as well...

anyone see it ? oh in case you might have watched Dave at 10pm he was
also on at 1130 too this was when TP was on....

maybe TP has a bullpen full of drummers !

Mr. Petty did a song at a concert, he said it was a B-side.
The song went something like
	I had a girl, Marijuana...
then
	I had a girl, Cocaine...

and went through a lot of other 'girls'.

Anyone know what this was a b-side for?
Thanks in advance.

Girl on LSD is the B-side to You Don't Know How It Feels. I sent for
the 45, and it came the same day Petty played the Boston Garden and
he played the song that night. Very funny song.
