B.J.Thomas has made a few Gospel records which contain lots
of good songs especially if you like his voice. You may like
to take a look.
For female singer, you may like to look into Amy Grant's records.
For group, you may like to start with Maranatha's singers.

| If you want to hear the real thing, you have to go to a black church in
Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia. :^) Failing that, look for
Five Blind Boys of Alabama
The Fairfield Four
Abyssinian Baptist Gospel Choir
The Birmingham Sunlights
The Dixie Hummingbirds
The Paramount Singers
Bob (who grew up in Alabama, where gospel singing is required for
citzenship) :^)

| Can't answer the question about Angels of Mercy, but...
A good sampler of some of the "obvious names" in gospel is Vol.1 in the
Rhino Records gospel compilation series, "Jubilation!" Vols.1 & 2 cover
some of the great black gospel singers & groups, Vol.3 their white
counterparts in related traditions. You only get a little taste of each,
which can be frustrating -- also, it doesn't compare (as previously noted)
to the live experience.... - Jay

| Thanks for the input folks....
I had my friend in the CD shop do a bit of inquiry for me, she says that
Rhino Records is out of business. True?
I have a newsletter from the Sydney Acappella Assoc and they give alot
of information about Acappella and Gospel music, I'll keep my eyes
peeled for some of the true Alabama gospel music. They also offer some
hard to get music for sale, I am getting "A Modern Compliation" of
Acappella from them.
I'm not a religious person but I would go to church just to hear that
fabulous singing live! It makes my hair stand on end!!
We have an all white gospel choir here, the director has a fabulous voice,
but they are a bit too polished, called The Cafe at the Gates of
Salvation. They do write a bit of their own material too. The newsletter
also has a gig guide so I'll check a few out, like the Amazing Grace Bros.
(we have a dept store called Grace Bros) and others that do sing in
churches.
Thanks again!

They're actively releasing stuff, dozens of things each month. And their
partners include Atlantic, Motown, and prominent others. I'd be very
surprised (and disturbed) if this was true! Has anyone heard anything?

P.S. I could list the contents of the "Jubilation Vol.1 - Great Black
Groups" Rhino set if you want.

| quoting webster's
gospel music n. American religious music associated with
evangelism and based on simple folk melodies blended with
rhythmic and melodic elements of spirituals and jazz.
but looking up spiritual one finds,
spiritual n. A religious song of S(outhern) black American
origin.
Can black people REALLY sing country western music?
My point is that you can't really label music as black or
white. It may be thought of as black or white but I have
heard plenty of white Gospel groups, just like I've heard
black country music singers. remember, the pointer sisters
won the first (and only?) Grammy for a country song!

| Sure, there's white gospel music. For me, the best gospel music has a
certain transcendent quality to it that I just don't often find in most
of the white gospel. I guess it's impossible to put in words exactly what
I mean. I *don't* mean to put down any of it. It doesn't have to be
transcendent to be enjoyable.
I've heard some old-time bluegrass gospel that can make the spine tingle,
like the Stanley Brothers doing "Oh, Death".
