541.0. "The Tragically Hip" by WONDER::REILLY (Sean Reilly CSG/AVS DTN:293-5983) Wed Nov 03 1993 14:50

    Fast becoming officially my favorite band of the 90's.

    I'm suprised to hear very little press on these guys from Canada,
    although they've had some airplay and hits on the AOR stations.

    This is a solid, talented, tight rock and roll band that makes
    well-crafted, gutsy, basic tunes.

    I think they've had 3 albums out since 1989

      Up to Here - minor airplay with "New Orleans is Sinking"

      Road Apples - no hits (maybe on the college stations), but this
                         was their simplest album - nothing but honest
                         guitar rock, punchy vocals, sincere lyrics

      Fully Completely - Lot more production on this than the previous, a
                         fuller sound. Couple of hits off this one,
                         including "100th Meridian."

    Sometimes a dark band, but the kind of mistake-free, filler-absent
    albums I see so rarely these days.

    I never would have even bothered with this band, because the name
    sounded too "alternative," one of those names that doesn't seem to fit
    the music, but thankfully a friend let me borrow the second CD.

    Yes, yes, yes, *yes*!!

    	My favorite is _Road Apples_ - you can't beat the tune "Long Time
    Running" - excellent, excellent band.

    	I saw them live in Memphis, of all places - incredible performers,
    especiall Gordon Downie, the lead singer. He exudes a passion for the
    music that is simply awesome.

    	By the way, on a recent trip to Canada, I found a *fourth* CD that
    I didn't know existed - it's self-titled ( their debut, i assume ) -
    also good, but a bit rough-hewn.

    	Their most popular song, I believe, is "Courage" from _Fully
    Completely_ . . .

    I like Tragically Hip a lot. I have Up to Here and Road Apples.
    I have seen them live a couple of years ago and they were
    a lot of fun.

    During the concert, somebody threw a t-shirt to the stage and the
    lead singer took of his t-shirt and wore the one that was thrown
    at him. Completed the show with that t-shirt.

    I haven't heard their last album "Fully Completely" fully completely
    yet but I have liked the songs I have heard.

    Great Canadian band. They are from Kingston, Ontario, the border town,
    2 hours away from my home.

      They are gigging soon in Syracuse. The radio blurb is promoting them
    as Canada's hottest band, even outselling Van Halen in Buffalo!
    That's saying something for their Canadian following!
      I'll have to check this band out.

    Read a recent quote where they say the name has actually worked against
    them (as also suggested in an earlier note). Saw em on SNL; great band.

    I can definitely buy that. In fact, when a freind first recommended them
    to me, I was told "Road Apples" was a straight-ahead rock and roll CD.

    "Straight rock by a band called "The Tragically Hip?" I thought. Sounded
    more to me like Orchestral Manouevres In the Dark or The Teardrop
    Explodes, no offense to those bands intended :^)

    "Fully Completely" is fairly alternative and "Day For Night" is
    pretty dark and moody, but all their CD's are undeniably "rock."

    	BMG lists 5 albums by these guys ... is the last one correct,
    	or is it a mis-named listing?

    	I ordered the Tragically Hip catalog from BMG but apparently
    	none of them are available through BMG.

    	It'd be nice if the list were updated occasionally, wouldn't
    	it?

541.15MKOTS3::GRENIERWed Jun 07 1995 11:082
    BMG doesn't maintain the list. 8^( ...and it seems like they're
    constantly dropping titles.
541.16BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTYTrouble with a capital 'T'Wed Jun 07 1995 12:534

    	Does that mean they don't own the list, or they do own it but
    	don't maintain it?

541.17MKOTS3::GRENIERWed Jun 07 1995 13:154
    The BMG list that's found on the internet is not maintained by BMG,
    but by an individual who wanted to make the full listing available.
    He made it by compiling order numbers from the monthly BMG catalogs,
    over 10 years or so.
541.18BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTYTrouble with a capital 'T'Wed Jun 07 1995 14:426

    	Wow.  That explains alot.  8^)

    	I wonder if it would be in BMG's interest to maintain a complete
    	ACCURATE listing.

541.19MKOTS3::GRENIERWed Jun 07 1995 16:2410
    Wise a**.  8^)

    I'm sure they have a listing internally that spells out exactly what
    they have in stock, but they choose not to make it public. There, is
    that more helpful? 8^) I've requested from both BMG & Columbia House
    a _full_ listing of all their titles, but have not had any success.
    Those 'A to Z' guides they send out are cr*p, too. Yeah, they're sorted
    alphabetically, but they don't list a quarter of the stuff they carry.
    The guides they send each month should _always_ be sorted alphabetically.

541.20BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTYTrouble with a capital 'T'Wed Jun 07 1995 17:557

    	No, actually, that was a serious comment ... it explains why
    	you'd get a slew of "out of stock" replies when you thought
    	you were ordering from a current "catalog", since the list
    	that we have access to is a compilation of everything that was
    	ever available at one time or another, but not necessarily now.
