512.1 | ALW | AKOCOA::CHENARD | | Tue Oct 05 1993 15:02 | 10 |
| I'm also a fan of ALW. I saw Phantom at the Majestic Theater in
NY but unfortunately Michael Crawford had already left the
production but I made up for it when Michael appeared at the
Wang Center singing the best songs from ALW shows.
I have no idea what he is up to. He hasn't been in the news
for a while.

The Phantom in Ottawa was Jeff the Mannequin from Today's Special.
Only 20 years later ;-)
He was fantastic

| I believe his latest success is "Sunset Boulevard".
A musical based on the movie. The New Yorker called
it "ALW's most persuasive score".

| The latest I've heard of (within the last few weeks, actually) is a
production of something called "Five Guys Named Moe."
I've always marveled at ALW's range of styles/interest, but the
snippets on the (radio) ad just surprised me again. Gets good reviews,
for whatever that's worth...
My all-time favorite of ALW's (even including Jesus Christ Superstar)
is his "Requiem." I saw it on a PBS special, with Sarah Brightman
(ALS's wife) singing the female soprano part. (Other parts, for those
who don't know it, are tenor and boy soprano.) To say it was moving
would be a vast understatement.

| I don't think ALW had anything to do with "Five Guys named Moe". It's
based on the music of swing/blues star Louis Jordan.

I was going to say - doesn't seem his style at *all*! ie: it's
good ;-) - don't mean to bash, but I just can't seem to get into ALW's
music ( apologies Lale ;-) )

| First I read this
>The latest I've heard of (within the last few weeks, actually) is a
>production of something called "Five Guys Named Moe."
and thought "no, can't be, I couldn't be that stupid to choose
A Streetcar Named Desire (Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange) over
an ALW work"
then I read this
>I don't think ALW had anything to do with "Five Guys named Moe". It's
>based on the music of swing/blues star Louis Jordan.
and I thought "of course, it was smart to go and see A Streetcar Named
Desire".
;-)
>don't mean to bash, but I just can't seem to get into ALW's
>music ( apologies Lale ;-) )
You don't have to apologize, sweetheart. Guess what you will be
listening to on 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of October ?
Oh, by the way, I take all the flatters back about the Bobs ;-)

512.8 | Am I hallucinating again? Still? | MSBCS::ASHFORTH | | Wed Oct 06 1993 12:31 | 8 |
| Well, I *have* been kinda tired lately, but I'm fairly certain that I did in fact
hear "Five Guys Named Moe" touted as being ALW's latest hit, complete with
comparisons made to Evita, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar as part of the ad.
Now I'll cross my fingers and hope like *crazy* to hear it at least once more
before my next trip to the shrink...

a commercial :)

ps. I can't think of the fifth Moe- Little Moe, Big Moe, Eat Moe, 4 eyed Moe.

512.11 | Slow Moe? | OSLACT::HENRIKW | Riding the Nordic Territory | Wed Oct 06 1993 13:33 | 8 |
| While we're all waiting anxiously for the correct answer on the
Louis Jordan issue, may I just nitpick a little and
request a topic title correction: Webber, not Weber -
however musical the latter was.
This note will selfdestruct upon correction.

| re: Five Guys Named Moe controversy
I believe the ad says "From the people that brought you JCS, Evita,
etc." as opposed to "the *composer* of JCS, Evita, etc." I think
Five Guys Named Moe has the same producers as those ALW shows. It's
definitely not an ALW show.

512.16 | "Moe" is NOT Webber | AKOCOA::LEINONEN | | Thu Oct 07 1993 14:21 | 15 |
|
"Five Guys Named Moe" is currently playing at the Wilbur
Theatre in Boston. Produced by the same folks as some of
Webber's work, this show features music from Louis Jordan.
BTW - "Jesus Christ Superstar" is coming to the Wang Theatre
November 9-14th. Featured are the original Jesus and
Judas (Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson). Irene Cara (Fame/
Flashdance) is featured as Mary Magdelene and Styx's
Dennis DeYoung as Pilate.
Should be an interesting show!

| Re "Andrew Is Not A Moe":
I hate when that happens, but it did. The marketeer's word tricks do not usually
trip me up, but in this case they obviously did. The intent of the ad (IMHO) was
to give the *impression* that this was an ALW show without actually *saying* so.
"From the people who brought you..." Hoo boy, gimme a break.
I feel so... so... USED!
'Course, it could still be a great show, I s'pose.

Last night my daughter and I watched a sort of like a documentary
on the making of Aladdin. I learned that the lyrics of the songs
were written by none other than Tim Rice.
Ach, fever, runny nose, sore throat and headache. I haven't been
this sick in years. I'm going home. Good nite.
