501.0. "Eric Gales Band" by SALEM::DODA (Welcome to Amerika) Fri Sep 24 1993 13:33

Read a *glowing* review of "Picture of a Thousand Faces" by The Eric Gales
Band the other day.

They're a blues trio. Blistering guitar and a great cover of the
Beatles "I want you" (She's so Heavy).

Has anyone heard of these guys before?

Any opinions?

thanks

Funny you should mention this. A friend just asked me about that
Beatles cover. I never heard of them before.

This is their second album. Both are on Elektra. It's two brothers,
Eric (a teenager) on guitar, his older brother (forget his name) on
bass and vocals (live they just expanded to four pieces, bringing in a
new bassist, Eric's brother going over to second guitar).

The first album got good reviews but apparently didn't sell all that
well. I still haven't heard this guy, in fact had forgotten about him
until the new album came out and his face started popping up in
    magazines.

The general take is that the sound is Hendrix-influenced, although with
a black kid playing guitar that's the first thing every critic is gonna
    jump on.

Their first album had a small hit that some might remember, called "Sign
Of The Storm". Decent enough rock with a touch of blues, but I didn't
think it was anything real special.

The band is named for Eric, because he's real young (16?) and that's the
marketing hook. But it's his older brother that's really the bandleader,
writes all the songs, produces, etc.

I heard a tune on the radio the other day that sounded awful...
    GOOD!

    I was quite impressed.

Saw Eric sitting in one night on the Arsenio show, just jammin with the
band. They asked him who his influences were: "Hendrix, Stevie Ray,
    and my grandmother".

Eric was a pretty wailing player from what I saw.
