I recently picked up the Grass Roots greatest hits vol 1 & 2. 
There's a brief writeup on the band's history and I was surprised 
to discover that this band was actually put together after two 
studio musicians put out an album under the Grass Roots name and 
then couldn't tour because of other commitments. 

There were actually two separate bands known as the Grass Roots. 
It's mentioned that the 1st lineup was replaced due to "problems".

Does anyone have a more complete history of this band?

I really prefer the Rob Grill era rather than the 1st lineup and 
even managed to locate a Roots album from '82 "Powers of the 
Night" of which Grill is the lone remaining member.

Also, can anyone supply an album listing?
