| I've come to really appreciate her.
I only have her greatest hits album, but there's so many great tunes
on it and I don't seem to get bored of either listening to them or
playing them.
I also think that the Miami Sound Machine is a HOT band. Of course,
I'm getting the impression that with each new record, the MSM is
actually more and more "Machine" than human players. I.E. each
record seems to use more sequencing than the last.
I would LOVE to be in a band that did "Conga". That is HOT!

| Gloria is a talented lady....it's easy to throw that adjective around,
but not only is her studio work very good (particularly her 1st 3
albums) but I saw her at the Centrum, and she put on an outstanding
performance.
The concert was originally scheduled for November '89 ?? but she came
down with laryngitis (sp??) and was re-scheduled to March of '90. She
made mention of it when she performed that night, thanking the crowd
who attended for hanging in there, waiting for her to come back around.
The show was 8 days before her terrible bus accident in which she broke
her back, she'd probably like to forget that whole tour.
Her show was great though, the band was tight, and all very good
musicians, and Gloria is very energetic onstage. Her voice was
phenomenal, indeed for all the Many concerts I've seen over the years,
her performance that night stands out as one of the best individual
performances I've seen/heard.
Certainly she is a major star, and got a lot of publicity regarding her
accident and followup "Coming Out of the Dark" album, but she deserves
more appreciation in general I believe...for instance, MUCH more than
the "great" Stevie Nicks" oh, that's another topic...
anyway, if you have a chance, catch Gloria in concert, very
entertaining, and you probably won't have to stand on your seat for the
whole show :)

485.4 | a matter of individual taste | VAXWRK::STHILAIRE | Food, Shelter & Diamonds | Wed Sep 01 1993 17:41 | 20 |
| re .3, I wouldn't have replied here if you hadn't made mention of one
of my all-time favorite singers, Stevie Nicks. BUT, you did....so, I
have to say it. You claim that Gloria Estefan is far more talented
than "the great Stevie Nicks." Well, I think that's a matter of
opinion. I think it's all a matter of personal taste. I've seen
Gloria inteviewed on television, and she seemed like a nice person,
very gratefulf or her fans, etc., but, to be honest, her music leaves
me completely cold. I hate what I tend to think of as "dance music" in
general, anyway (Paula Abdoul, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Madonna,
Gloria Estefan, all that type of thing makes me want to barf, so I just
ignore it). So, I think it's impossible to compare Gloria Estefan and
Stevie Nicks. Their music is completely different. Their personal
styles are completely different. As I said, Gloria Estefan's music
completely bores me, whereas I love just about everything that Stevie
Nicks has ever recorded. I love her voice, the way she dresses and
wears her hair. (She used to be just beautiful. I used to wish I
looked like her, before she gained that weight!)

| Re last two:
Yup and yup- I love 'em BOTH, for their own unique talents. Personally, I think
that Gloria's voice and technical ability with it blows the doors off Stevie's,
but there's more to singing than that. Stevie (IMHO) exudes raw, primal *emotion*
in her singing to an unbelievable extent- and I couldn't analyze why it sounds
that way to me, it just does.
Guess that's why they call music an *art,* eh?

| How can you compare two different types of singers and say one *is*
better than the other? Maybe this topic belongs in the "I don't get it"
note. ;^) I personally like both Stevie *and* Gloria, but I place them
into two different and specific categories. The only thing similar (in
my book) is that they're both female singers with two completely
different styles.
Kinda like comparing the guitar work of Jeff Beck and Albert Lee.
They're both very good guitarists, but I'd be hard pressed to
compare and say one's better than the other. There's too much personal
taste (I like/dislike) to make a fair comparison and since the styles
are so different how can you honestly compare the two?
Enough 2 for one day! ;^)

>> To compare these two is so arbitrary that it's absurd.
Balderdash. It's perfectly legitimate to compare
quality and control with respect to the voices of two female singers
of pop music. What's the problem?
That's like saying it's absurd to compare Rubenstein to
Horowitz. It's not arbitrary.

Although I personally think that comparisons of *some* nature can be made, I feel
compelled to point out that I *can* understand the point of view that the
original comparison was inappropriate. WRT your analogy, I'd say a more
appropriate one would be a comparison between Horowitz and, say, Doug Kershaw.
It's not that vocal quality and control can't be compared, it's just that that's
not all there is to singing. It's also true that technical aspects o music don't
play as important a part in some styles of music as they do in others. So, mebbe
Doug Kershaw can't hit a perfect cadenza, and mebbe Horowitz can't stomp his
feet while he plays. (And I'll bet neither one cares a lot, either...)
Git the pick-cha? <G>

I git your pick-cha, but I don't agree.
I wouldn't try to compare Kershaw and Horowitz, by the way.
