| I've looked for this release for quite some time with no luck.
This is one of my all-time favorites. As a matter of fact, Johnny
Winter And was the first real rock concert I ever went to (with
Foghat as backup at the Boston Music Hall). There was also a Jouhny
and Edgar Together album that was awesome (the ultimate version of
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling").

No, it's not on CD (according to the Summer '93 Schwann/Spectrum). Right
now, it's only available on cassette. - Jay

thanks... I'll look for the cassette and be patient for a while until
the CD becomes available (it's bound to isn't it...)
The first one who sees it, makes a reply here? (I've put an alarm on this
note!)

| I've never *seen* the CD in record shops either but it's listed in
the jpc catalogue (jpc is a German mail order company). Oddly enough,
the CD is not from CBS/Sony but from "Beat Goes On Records" - never
heard of this label.
Greetings from Munich,

Could you post JPC's address so I can write or call them???
That would be GREAT news! (You're sure that is not 'Johnny Winter And Live'?)
Thanks in adv and greetings from Brussels

| Dirk,
sorry I have to disappoint you - according to their T&C's, jpc does
not deliver into foreign countries.
The catalogue lists also the tracks: Guess I'll go away; Ain't that a
kindness; No time to love; Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo; Am I here;
Look up; Prodigal son; On the limb; Let the music play; Nothing left;
Funky music. Is it this what you're looking for?
If you have the chance to come to Germany: jpc has also stores in
some cities e.g. Mnster, Bremen, Hamburg.
I never ordered from jpc but if you see no chance to get hold of the
CD, I would mail-order it and then send it to you.

Yes yes... that's it!!!
Do they perhaps have a store in Aachen or Kln? those cities are closest
to where I live and I hear SATURN in Kln is open on the first saturday
of each month and they have a HUGE collection of CD's...
If not, maybe you could order and send it over (let's mail about that then:
I don't think the rest of the world will be interested in our correspondence)
Mind you: I still have to buy a CD-player (could do that at Saturn next
saturday)...

| No jpc shops in Aix and Cologne...Yes, stores are open every first
Saturday till 4 pm (fall/winter till 6 pm). Saturn claims to have the
widest CD choice in whole Europe. Don't know whether thats true, in
any case you'll find *many* more CD's you *must* have, than your
budget allows.
Though I did not see "And" at Saturn in Munich, you could be successful
in Cologne. If not, e-mail me and I'll try jpc.

467.10 | got it! | BRSTR2::SYSMAN | Dirk Van de moortel | Tue Aug 03 1993 04:18 | 9 |
| Guess what...
I found 'Johnny Winter And' yesterday in Antwerp!
It was in the Blues rack: I should have known: JW is a white blues giant
and that's where I should have looked in the first place, although this
particular record isn't blues at all... what's in a style anyway...
Ciao and thanks to all.

467.11 | got it! -- revisited | BRSTR2::SYSMAN | Dirk Van de moortel | Fri Aug 06 1993 05:48 | 54 |
| As promised to Rainer, here's a quick review of the CD (Johnny Winter And).
Written yesterday evening at home and quickly
typed in today during my coffee break ;-)
I listened to JWA carefully and it is exactly the same as the vinyl, except
for the numerous scratches and hiss and noise on the latter of course.
It surely stood the test of time (23 years!).
- Overall sound and atmosphere is really dirty, funky, nasty, mean...
I can't say that this is rock and roll, or rock, or blues, or whatever.
You can't put a style on it.
- Both JW and RD do excellent and intense singing.
Sometimes JW is just at the fringe of being out of tune. Very typical
of him, very honest, very good!
- The bass & drums on all the songs is simple (1970!) but very much to
the point.
- I think Edgar Winter (producer) plays piano in the background on some
tracks.
- As I said before in (.0), the guitar interplay between Johnny Winter and
Rick Derringer is absolutely marvelous.
I never can tell who's playing what. Normally JW plays lead and rhythm
guitar and RD is a born rhythm guitarist, but it's very hard to tell the
difference: lead transforms into rhythm and vice versa all the time.
Sometimes there are two leads, sometimes two rhythms. It's really hard to
keep them apart and to know who plays what. In fact, trying to do so is
great fun: I've been doing it for 23 years now. If anyone can tell me
who's playing what on which part of which song, PLEASE DON'T as it would
spoil everything!!! Or better, just tell me that you can, and I'll think
about getting informed...
It's a like piano playing: try to play only the right or left hand part
of a piano piece: they both sound empty when separated, but put them
together and the piece jumps into existence! After all a guitar has 6
strings and a hand has 5 fingers. Putting 2 guitars together is like
putting the 2 hands of a piano together. I think this record is an
excellent example of this phenomenon.
Track list is:
Guess I'll Go Away
Ain't That a Kindness?
No Time To Live ! not To 'Love' as you wrote, Rainer ;-)
Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo
Am I Here?
Look Up
Prodigal Son
On The Limb
Let The Music Play
Nothing Left
Funky Music
Go and find it... it's a MUST!

467.12 | a new JW fan | VAXWRK::STHILAIRE | smog might turn to stars someday | Thu Dec 09 1993 10:02 | 13 |
| I've been aware of Johnny Winter for years (also Edgar Winter), but
except for noticing their unusual physical appearance, I never paid any
attention to them or their music. However, I recently bought the Bob
Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration video and have fallen in love with
Johnny Winter's performance. He does a cover of Highway 61. I just
love the way he plays the guitar and can't believe I never paid enough
attention to him before to realize I would like him. So, I have
decided that I need to buy an album. Can anyone suggest a good Johnny
Winter album to start with? Is "Johnny Winter And" which is mentioned
previously in this topic the best?

Lorna,
I have an LP titled 'Johnny Winter' from '69 which I consider very
good, and a 2LP (of which one LP has a blank side!) titled 'Second
Winter', also from '69, also good. I think these are his first and
they are in fact legendaric. If you can find them on CD, then I'll
promise you'll fly ;-).

| Re: .12
"Highway 61 Revisited" is on "Second Winter".
"Johnny Winter And" is a good place to start except it's hard to find
these days (witness earlier replies). I'd suggest "Still Alive and
Well" myself (not sure if that is on CD either!).
While his first Columbia album is largely blues, most of his stay on
that label is rock and roll ("Nothing But The Blues" is another
exception), then when he went off to record for other labels (Alligator,
MCA, PointBlank), he'd gone back to a blues approach (though he's not
very "traditional" as viewed by blues fans).

| Lorna, try "Let Me In". It's his next to most recent release, out
about 3 years ago. This has a good balance of both JW's bluesier and
rockier sides and would be a great introduction; it's also one of
his most listenable albums imo. The most recent "Hey Where's Your
Brother?" is in a similar vein, but I think I'd choose the other first.
"Johnny Winter And" was released circa 1970 and is a bit more on the
rock side; a great album, but probably not the best intro.

Yeah, given that "JW And" is hard to find... Go with "Second Winter". It
has the Dylan cover, his original cover of "Johnny B. Goode", and several
other good cuts. And what used to be a 3-sided LP makes a reasonably
generous CD. - Jay

I agree with Rick C - "Let Me In". Either that or JW And Live".
Johnny is alot like Springsteen where his studio albums are
nothing like live. Still Alive and Well is great too.
And I agree, his performance on the Dylan tribute was killer.
Talk about blues slide guitar...
"Let Me In" has a song called "Illustrated Man" and you can see
he's just that with all the tatoos. "Hey You" is a riot. He
screams "Hey You" and the band replies "Who Me?" That's most
of the words (Edd should like this one ;^)
Rock and Roooooooolll....

467.18 | and "The Progressive Blues Experiment" | BRSTR2::SYSMAN | Dirk Van de moortel | Fri Dec 10 1993 01:47 | 13 |
| Lorna...
There is also "The Progressive Blues Experiment". I haven't checked, but
I think it's the very first record JW ever made. If I recall well, there
is a very good version of 'Black Cat Bone' on it. Haven't played that
one for a while: too busy with Zappa!
Most CD versions are available in the good shops. You can always ask the
shop people to order them. Just ask them what they can find.
My opinion: "Johnny Winter And" and "Second Winter" are the best!

I bought "Let Me In" over the weekend and like it.
Also, a friend of mine has "Guitar Slinger" and I like that even more
but haven't found it in a store yet.
