    Hi All,

       A friend of mine just picked up the double pack Cd of Paul Simon's
    greatest hits. I listen to country music all the time, and some rock
    however I don't normally know the rock groups. I've heard these Cd's a
    couple of times while visiting her and there both great.

    Hi Rose,

    I see potential in you. It's time we expose you to some good music
    other than country (which is, of course, excellent too) ;-)

    Lale

    ps: Sunday morning at 2 am, we (20 people) almost drove to the Hull
    facility to see you, then I realized that you don't work over the
    weekends.

    re .1, I didn't think there was anybody living on the North American
    Continent who hadn't heard of Simon and Garfunkel. They had their
    first hit album when I was in high school, and I'm 43 yrs. old now.

     ~~~~~ ^^^
    Which one do you consider "first hit" ? The first one was "Wednesday
    Morning, 3 am". It did have Sound of Silence on it. So is that album
    the first hit album too ?
    I was going to ask how I could fill in the gaps with available
    releases, compilations or box sets. I have these :
    Wednesday Morning 3 am
    Concert in the Central Park
    Negotiations and Love Songs (compilation)
    Then I have everything Paul Simon did afterwards.
    I know there are at least 2 box sets available. Any suggestions ?
    Lale
    ps: I am so happy I managed to tape Central Park, Graceland and Born at
    the Right Time from PBS. Question: Why don't they broadcast in stereo ?
    Or is that a silly thing to ask ?
    re .4, that's a good question.  Their first hit single was definitely
    Sound of Silence, and that song was definitely on the first album I
    bought.  But, I can't remember the name of that album!  I can't even
    picture the cover at this point!!  Wow.  That was a long time ago, and,
    unfortunately, I no longer have all of my albums from high school days.
    So, I don't know.
    I remember that they had recorded the album, and then taken a vacation
    in England, and that the record company called them in England to tell
    them they had a No. 1 hit record back in the states.  That must've been
    so exciting for them.  :-)  They were unknowns before that.
I was at the Dream Theater concert in Hampton this Sunday, and the guy sitting
next to me seemed surprised that I would be into a band like that.  When I
asked why, he said "I don't know, you just look more like somebody who'd be
going to see Simon and Garfunkel".  ????  And I'm not even as old as Lorna :-)
    "Sounds of Silence" was on two albums (not counting compilations), the
    first one (Wed. Morning) where it is just voices and acoustic guitar,
    and the second (I think called "Sounds of Silence") which had an
    overdubbed rock band backing (this is the version most people know).
    In fact S&G had broken up when the single broke (Simon had gone off to
    England) and they got back together to do the second album.
    There's a 3-CD box set of all 5 of the Simon and Garfunkel albums
    available (Wednesday Morning 3 AM, Sounds of Silence, Parsley Sage
    Rosemary & Thyme, Bookends, and Bridge Over Troubled Water).
    Unfortunately the sound is generally quite poor as CD's go.  The
    masters and even the early generation copies were apparently lost.
    It's a shame they didn't add the live tracks from the Greatest Hits
    album as well to fill out the last CD.
    Here I Go Again On My Own!!!! (Remember this one)
         Oh don't get me wrong, I do listen to a lot of Rock and enjoy it,
    however don't ask me who sings what as I'm a little confused in the
    Rock N Roll Department, though I love 50's and 60's stuff.
         This is probably not the place to put this but, can someone
    clarify who sings "Cats In The Cradle", I think this is a great tune.
    My friend (who's always been a Rock N Roller) and I disagree on this
    one, she says it's Bon Jovi, and I say it's not, I firgured if she's
    the Rock N Roll expert and she's wrong then I'm not doing half bad.
          Lale, great hearing from you again, you've probably noticed that
    I changed my note up top, thanks for the info. And your right at 2 a.m.
    the last thing on my mind was Dec, I guess you were on a mission and I
    missed you Oh well next time.
453.19what on the new cd?COMET::LEVETTThu Sep 16 1993 18:236
    So, does anyone know what's on Pauls new 3 cd set that supposed to be
    issued on the 28th of this month?  The title is something like
    "Paul Simon 1963-1993"  I'm hoping that the Paul Simon Songbook cuts
    are featured.
453.20Paul's New Box SetCOMET::LEVETTFri Oct 01 1993 13:0059
	Now, I've been accused by my family for like anything by Paul Simon
	simply because it's by Paul Simon.  I'm afraid I can't say the same
	is true for his new boxed set 1964-1993.  First off, if I were an
	artist putting out a boxed set, I wouldn't recycle my previously
	released greatest hits with a few oddities or unreleased tracks.
	I believe Paul could/should have geared this set to the avid
	Simon&Garfunkel/Paul Simon fan.
	IMHO he could have made a four cd package and rereleased the "Paul
	Simon Songbook" in its entirety and not just *one* cut from the album.
	He could have used cuts from Saturday Night Live where he and Artie
	had a reunion and did some great versions of their hits.  He could
	have included his and George Harrisons versions of "Homeward Bound"
	and "Here Comes The Sun".  He could have used more outtakes from
	some of his recording sessions.  He could of released music from
	the Kraft Music Hall Special he and Art did in the 60's.  How about
	the original version of "Gone At Last" done with Bette Midler?
	And, I'm sorry, my version of "Hey Schoolgirl" on the Pickwick label
	(vinyl) is in better sounding condition then the pops/clicks/scratched
	version presented on the cd. I can't believe that I own a better copy
	than Paul!  Was he looking for that nostalgic sound?  The overall
	sound quality, is *ok* and I can understand some tape hiss on the
	older stuff, but hearing the loud hissing during the opening guitar
	parts of "Me and Julio" is unacceptable.
	The "lavish" book is certainly not.  It's difficult to read portions
	as the print is washed out but the pictures it's reproduced on.
	The pictures, for the most part are nothing new for the S&G fan.
	Paul only gives "detailed" liner notes on one of the discs. The
	booklet opens funny and, at least with my copy, you'd have to break
	the spine to read & see everything.  Certainly not of the caliber
	of say what you got in the Led Zep/Jethro Tull/CSN/Frank Sinatra/
	or Byrds boxed set!
	So is there anything I liked?  There is only *one* totally new song
	on the cd, a tune called "Thelma" that sounds like it was taken off
	of the "Saints" cd.  Good tune.  The live version (available on his
	live cd) of "Sound of Silence" is great.  The working version of
	Paul doing "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" isn't very good but give the
	fan an idea of the songs evolution.  It's nice to have the "Songbook"
	version of "Leaves That Are Green" though I think he could have
	picked a better track.  There is a 2+ minutes cut called "The Breakup"
	which is a comedy bit that he and Artie did.  Cute but, give me a
	break!
	Ok, so why did I get it?  First, I was hoping for a lot of unreleased
	material and I wasn't able to certain that prior to purchasing.
	Second, I got the boxed set at a very reasonable (IMO) price. Third,
	I don't have much of Pauls solo stuff on cd and this had almost
	everything I wanted (Why didn't he put on "Stranded In A Limousine"
	or "Allergies").  My recommendation is that if you have S&G's
	Greatest Hits and Pauls "Negotiations" you'd be better off *not*
	getting this boxed set because you probably have the majority of
	of what's in this boxed set.  I believe Paul did his fans a great
	disservice.
     Unless I read you wrong you're more of a Simon and Garfunkel fan than
   a Paul Simon fan. It wouldn't surprise me if Simon played up Simon and
   not Simon and Garfunkel.
     I heard an interview with him on Imus in the morning (Boston) and he and
   Art split because Paul wanted to be the leader and Art had his own views
   (usually conflicting).
    FWIW,
    Not exactly.  I have everything of Paul's on vinyl, have his song books
    and have seen him solo a couple of times.  I do tend to like his
    "folkier" stuff to say some of the material on "Still Crazy" though I
    think "Graceland" and "Saints" are great cds.
    I just felt that as an artist he could have given his fans more than
    what he did.  Bob, if you're a Paul Simon fan you might want to pick up
    his unauthorized biography.  Very interesting.  I think there will
    *always* be a love/hate relationship between Paul and Art.
    Actually I'm NOT a Simon fan. I do enjoy the Simon and Garfunkel stuff
