441.0. "Santana" by SALEM::BOTELHO () Fri Jun 18 1993 16:52

I couldn't beleave that out of 440 topics in this file there is no
       Santana topic.

	I think its about time.

He is IMHO the best guitar player ever.

He will be at GREATWOODS SEPT 12 with Bob Dillan.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow June 19.

	I'm there!!

						See ya

I liked a lot of his earlier stuff, and of recent releases I think
Blues for Salvador is superb....but I bought Spirits Dancing in the
Flesh and was disappointed (despite the guest appearance of Vernon
Reid, another great - in a different vein- guitarist) - what's Milagro
    like?

I haven't missed a show the last 4 times he has been here.

I'm not real crazy about Dilan but maybe I'll like him better
		live.

Re .2 I liked Milargo But I also liked Spirits.
If I had to choose between the two I like Spirits better.

Carlos actually played guitar on one of Bob Dylan's live albums - 'Real Live'
I think it was, back in the mid-80's. So they go back a ways.....

    Hi,

Here to tell you all that Santana will hit the streets again soon.

as sound man and he will be off as from the 30th of june next for
    about 6 weeks.

If you like I will keep track of him and ask him to report me the
inner info on whats happening ok. I'll ask.

I believe they're touring together the whole summer. I have tickets to
see them at Jones Beach (Long Island, NY) and they're also playing in
    the Garden State Arts Center.

This and Steely Dan are the two concerts I'm most looking forward to -
it's like a dream come true. So many of my fav's in one summer!

Dylan & Santana together on the same bill is very interesting given
their diverse styles and audiences. I really like this mix!

    RE on a few notes

Yup, Dylan will be suporting the acts. A nice touch during the tour
will be a show dedicated to John Coltrane(the jazz monster ;))
Just before Carlos hits the streets he heard from the owners(family)
of John Coltrane his material that Carlos is alowed to use it all
in his own respective way. So Carlos has opted a special concert to
honor John and his music which will be held in Entibe(sp?) France on
    the 24th of july.

Nico(head techn. of all keyboard equipment) projects that it will be
a smash tour this year. I will hear more from him and Bill Stern at
later stage, I'll keep you guys posted ;^))

441.13WHAT DID HE SAY???????????SALEM::BOTELHOMon Sep 13 1993 13:3138
	Hi All,

Well I saw the show last night here at Greatwoods and the 2nd
	half was fantastic.

First up was a Reggae? (sp) band called Shark Attack I think.
Nothing special your basic Reggae stuff.

Then Bob Dylan come on to a thunderous ovation but when he
started to sing I couldn't understand much if any of what he was saying.
Not being a Dylan fan to begin with and not being familiar with the
words didn't help any. I didn't recognize any of his songs but again
I'm not a Dylan fan. I liked his band though.

Last up was Santana. The initial responce was not as big as
that for Dylan But by the time he finished his first tune (Spirits
Dancing in the Flesh) the sections in front of me were on there feet
and didn't sit down for the entire set. I was in the last row of section
	3. The only slow point in the Santana set was the Bass solo It seemed
to take too long to get going.

All in all I had a good time. I'm glad that Dylan was up first
because had he been up last I would have sat through his set hoping
for the two of them to jam at the end and when that didn't happen I
	Would have been BULL.

I would like to hear from some Dylan fans who were there and
find out how this show compaires to others.

RE: .4 I was able to find the Santana, Buddy Miles casette
	If your still interested.

What a relief. I thought it was me. I was blaming my English not
being able to understand what he was saying up on stage. I saw Bob
Dylan a couple of years ago and I could only recognize the songs after
he was halfway thru. And even after that, I couldn't understand the
    lyrics.

Sorry for the micehole within the rathole but looking at Eric Clapton
and Bob Dylan, I am thinking, they must have used different dosage.
Clapton seems to be in great shape whereas Dylan ... I'll never
forget how he made a fool out of himself on Grammy awards a few
    years back.

441.17DylanVAXWRK::STHILAIREa sense of wonderTue Sep 14 1993 14:5716
I saw Dylan in concert back in May of '92, in San Jose, and he was
actually in pretty good shape that night. Well, voice-wise anyway. He
does look awfully old, but as I said about Mick Jagger in another note,
at least he still has his hair, and he's thin, and how many men over 50
can say that? :-) His face looks real old, though, but, even among
regular, ordinary, non-famous, non-rockstar mortals, some people age a
lot faster than others. It may be hereditary and might have little to
do with drugs taken or not taken.

And, regardless of what Dylan is or is not doing now, I will always
love him for what he meant to me when I was young. His music meant a
lot to me back in the '60's when I was young, and nothing will ever
change that. He'll always be one of my heroes.

441.18Request for future Dylan/Santana tour datesLMOPST::DKAS::DOLLIVERWatching my life go by ...Tue Sep 14 1993 15:1023
If anyone has a schedule of future dates for the Dylan/Santana tour
I would very much appreciate them posting it or dropping me a mail
    message. Thanks very much.

I was at the Great Woods show, and we didn't have any trouble
    understanding words, although leaning on the stage may have helped ;-}
I saw Bob Dylan at Great Woods last year when he had a rock and roll
screaming band with him for the whole show, and this year's show was
_much_ better. He played several acoustic numbers, and added a
kick-ass drummer for his rockier numbers. His repertoire included
songs from throughout his career, and you could actually hear his
guitar leads (I think hanging out with Carlos has done him a lot of
good). Dylan seemed to be projecting out into the crowd instead of
ducking back into himself like he has a tendency to do.

Santana was fantastic ... they seemed to be breaking in a new drummer who
seemed like just a kid (Rocky something??) but he did a fantastic job,
and is clearly a natural talent. The other percussionists were also
great, and the two vocalists worked well in the band. I agree that the
bass solo took a while to take off ... he may have had a bit of trouble
getting in synch with the new drummer.

    Todd
441.19The drummer was about 1 month old ..... Funny he looked older : }SALEM::BOTELHOTue Sep 14 1993 17:5514
Thats correct the drummer was new to the band.

I'm told by someone who knows a relative of the old drummer that
he quit the band about a month ago, sighting creative differances.

I guess Carlos can be pretty hard to get along with sometimes.
And judging from the turnaround of band members over the years I'd
	say this may be true.

YES you old SANTANA freeks over there ...

... we (that's my family here - ie wife and two kids 7 and 9) have just
seen SANTANA playing their last world tour concert in
    BRISBANE/AUTRALIA.

We had to cover some 3000km (or 1500miles for you guys) over a four day
weekend to achieve that goal - BUT WORTH EVERY MILE !!!! (the big FORD
did it easy but we were a bit "stuffed" after the return).

I have seen SANTANA first time in 1972 over in ZURICH/SWITZERLAND but
have meanwhile transferred to AUSTRALIA (some 10 years ago). I have
tried never to miss a concert in EUROPE, but here in OZ it's a bit
    difficult at times.

My little boy, himself learning to play the guitar himself, was pretty
    impressed with the performance.

Problem was, they ran out of merchandise and there were no T-Shirts or
anything left for the kids either - so they wre a bit disappointed.

ANY OF YOU KNOW THE FANCLUB address ??

I thought I could get in contact with Carlos to get some signed posters
    or so.

Shortly after the first album came out, I saw Santana at the Fillmore
East in NYC. I admit my memory of the event might be a little fogged
by the time delay (and some other effects way back when), but the way I
remember it, they came out on stage, played the album from beginning to
end, note-for-note, and that was their show. It was absolutely
cosmic... the music was so gripping and they were so good.

I'll third this.....One of the best records ever made (well maybe a little

The triple live one - that's LOTUS and I'd hold off on that until I

Yea, I'd have to agree with this one too. I'd still get Abraxas first
though just because it was such a great studio lp.

HAve you heard Lotus? It's a 3 LP live set with beautiful packaging
(I've heard it's out on CD but haven't seen it) from the Sony-CBS label.

More experimental/jazzy/electronic...very nice.

I thought "Viva!" was a better 2-CD starting point than Moonflower.

Like "Moonflower," "Viva!" isn't the perfect box-set, and it isn't
exactly a greatest hits, but it includes some choicer cuts. Plus
the version of Soul Sacrifice on "Moonflower" is not as nice at the
    Woodstock version included on "Viva!"

I still love the first 2 that were released (Santana & Abraxas). You
