435.0. "Janis Ian" by TECRUS::ROST (I need air freshener under the drums) Tue Jun 01 1993 17:50

I was driving home late last night listening to the radio and heard the
title track of Janis Ian's album "Stars" slipped in between some
classical music selections. It's been almost twenty years now since
that album came out and the beginning of Janis' "comeback". She's
slipped into obscurity again, unfortunately. The DJ mentioned that
"Stars" hasn't made it to CD yet. Certainly a chilling song, perhaps
moreso now that she's faded away again than when she wrote it!

I always felt a little Janis Ian went a long way, but she wrote a few
really powerful songs that rose above the typical singer/songwriter
navel-gazing of a lot of her work. Of her better stuff, "Stars" may be
    the best.

Whaddya know, I just saw in the paper that Janis has a new album coming
out on the Morgan Creek label. She turned down an offer to renew with
CBS for $250,000 because she wanted more creative control, but then
noone else would sign her, thus her lack of recordings for awhile.

That alsways seems to happen, Brian. You don't hear anything for ages
and then you happen to catch a bunch of old tracks on the radio and sure
as, well, out comes a new album. I think the PR people get things going
in advance to wet the appetites of old fans. A refresher, sort of like,
"When we last saw our superhero..."
