| This is from memory. This stuff has appeared on various labels.
First two Roxys were originally on Warner Bros., but when the band
started with Atco on the third album, the first two were reissued, etc.
Avalon was on Warners again...it is confusing.
I think in the UK they were all on Island?

I think they were all on Island in the UK too, but I'm not 100% sure.
The first three in Brian's list (Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure and
Stranded) are generally considered to be the ones to have, although they
all have their moments. I've got the first two, plus Country Life
(patchy, but "Out Of The Blue" is a must) and Viva (a pretty good live
album IMO; I particularly like the song selection).
Intelligence and avant-garde style have always been their key points.
Some of their music is forgettable but they did produce some of the
most imaginative music of the 70s (Remake-Remodel, The Bogus Man,
Virginia Plain, In Every Dream Home A Heartache).
The lineup also changed at least twice, but I think the classic Roxy
Music lineup was:
Bryan Ferry - vocals
Phil Manzanera - guitar
Brian Eno - keyboards
Andy Mackay - sax
Paul Thompson - bass
A.N. Other - drums (name escapes me)

| Yes, Country Life and Viva are 2 of my faves. I've had to replace
each atleast once.
"In every dream home a heartache" is still one of my favorite songs
of all time. Top 25 anyway.
I still love what Brian does but since Roxy he's lost his edge.
Basically he had been through the door and came back through.
Lucky for him, some never did.

Re -2.
I think Paul Thompson was the drummer and A.N.Other played bass.
I don't believe they ever had a regular bass player,in fact the first
album credits changed from one chappie (Graham Something?) to possibly
John Wetton who was,in the early days their most regular bassist.

wrote that note, and forgot to check the album covers last night.
I believe Wetton played bass on Viva.

420.13 | Bassist du Jour | TECRUS::ROST | I need air freshener under the drums | Fri May 28 1993 10:27 | 15 |
| What happened with Roxy bassists was their original bassist Rik Kenton
(pictured on the inner sleeve of the first LP) had to quit (story was a
nervous breakdown). Apparently they were never able to find a suitable
replacement and just hired bassists as they needed them.
For recordings they started to use John Porter and John Gustafson,
Wetton only did live work with them. "Viva" lists two or three
bassists if I recall (Wetton, Gustafson and ?).
After the initial breakup, Thompson also left so the band continued as
a trio (Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay) plus hired hands form "Manifesto"
onwards. I always dug Thompson's playing, but he seems to have dropped
out of sight since leaving Roxy.

| Since the details of lineups are getting brought out, Eddie Jobson
deserves a mention for violin and keys on "Viva" at the very least
(and the (somewhat well known?) bootleg "Champagne and Novacaine") -
perhaps Brian would recall whether he was with them for studio work
too (I think he was, but can't be sure).

| Re: Jobson
Eddie Jobson, who had gone pro at age 17 with the band Curved Air, was
Brian Eno's replacement. Eno left after "For Your Pleasure" and Jobson
was around until "Viva".
Jobson of course went off to form UK with Wetton and since then has had
some success with solo projects which veer into the new age
instrumental category.

I've been a fan of Eddie Jobson since the Curved Air days. He made
an excellent replacement on violin and keyboards for Darryl Way as well
as Brian Eno in Roxy Music (of which I'm also a VERY big fan of!! When
I first did a search for Roxy Music in this conference and came up
blank I was real disappointed until I found this note.)

Can anybody come up with some possible album names here for
Jobson's solo projects? I wouldn't mind checking them out. I lost
track of him after Roxy.....

Thanks for the info. I have Tull's "A" on a cassette as that is
another one of my main bands that I listen to. But the cassette insert
gives very little info. (Just song titles and that's about it.)
I'll have to check out this band UK that you mentioned. I think
I've head of them but I'm not sure, I may be confussing the name with
U2. Nothing on Jobson's solo projects huh? Well, thanks a lot for
what you were able to supply. It's appreciated.

| Of the UK albums, the first ("UK") is tighter to my non-musician ears,
but that might just be MHO. Then again, there's much to be said for
Bruford and Holdsworth's talents ! Highly recommended. There's also a
live album of the 2nd lineup, "Night after Night", which I think was
recorded on a tour in which they opened for Tull.
I'm fortunate enough to have a live tape (off the radio) of the first
lineup at the Cleveland Agora.
Jobson had 1 solo album that I'm aware of - "Green", around 1984? (Brian
will probably have the final word, again !).
The other violinist from Curved Air, Daryl Way (?), also had a later
band by the name of Wolf - not quite as impressive as C.A. Curved Air
also included Francis Monkman, later of Sky and many movie soundtracks,
and even Stewart Copeland (a final semi-reunion).

(I know Brian will have more than 2 to add, and like H. Ross, I'm all

and even some Roxy hits from the first albums (Virginia Plain, Do the
Strand, Pictures of You). 9 piece band (3 guitars), excellent bass
playing (8 string at times, funky and impressive slapping solo). Bryan
was in great form.
