413.0. "'Ensemble' shows/concerts" by NEMAIL::CARROLLJ (Doin' the same thing twice) Fri Apr 30 1993 14:25

It seems that 'ensemble' shows, for lack of a better word, are becoming
more prevelant - Lollapalooza, New York Rock-n-Soul Revue, the upcoming
Spin Drs, Screamin' Trees and Soul Asylum shows . . . Now, I know this
isn't a new idea ( can you say Woodstock? ) - but it does seem that
they're occuring more often then the old occasional double-bill - or is
    it just my imagination? . . .

Anyways, I for one think they are a great idea for a few reasons -

First, it tends to expose people to new music - they may go to see one
band, but find they enjoy another.

Second, yes, it's true the bands neccesarily have to play shorter sets,
but still - you're usually getting more music for your $$$ ( even if
you do buy scalped tickets :-) )

Third, they tend to be much longer events ( all day in the case of
Lollapalooza ), which I think is the way it should be, if only at
    outdoor arenas.

Now, of course, some people may use these same reasons for saying why
they DON'T like this type of show, but - different drummers, right?

I agree with Jim. These shows are a great idea and there should be
more of them. The first one I went to was either in 72 or 74 in
the Oakland Colliseum. The show started at 10:00 a.m. and ended
    shortly after midnight.

    The line up was in order of appearence;

    	Jessie Colin Young

    	Joe Walsh and Barnstorm

    	The Band with Bob Dylan

    	Crosby Still Nash and Young

I've been kinda amazed that through the years there haven't been more
of these. Money, time, arrangements, etc. I guess.

BTW - $10.00 for the show. Not sure exactly how inflation acted on
that over the years but I'd day $35.00 - $40.00 is about right. It's
    all relative.

$200.00 to see Paul Mc. not me but there are artists who if still were
living I'd probably pay that price. I wouldn't want to nor would I be
    happy about it.

    Oh, shuddup !

    ;-)

Jim, I have been to such a concert, 6 bands 90 minutes or so each,
45 minutes in between bands (during which music of the same bands
are played), it was an all day event. Although, I liked more than
half of the bands, when it was all over, and when I was finally heading
home, I could almost feel my brain bouncing in all directions within
    my skull.

    Never again, I say ;-)

Well, you should still go to the Hothouse Flowers/Tragically
    Hip/Midnight Oil concert :-)

We'll probably see more of these type of shows as tours are becoming
more expensive to put on, thus sharing the expenses between multiple
acts makes it a lower financial risk.

It's sorta full circle. When I was a teenybopper in the 60s, "package"
shows where an auditorium hosted five or six bands blasting through
three or four songs each was the norm. Extended rock shows in a
concert setting didn't really happen until the late 60s.
