387.0. "Journeyman" by WBC::DEADY ("...that's as green as it gets...") Mon Mar 29 1993 18:23

While watching Keith Richards' Center Stage on VH-1 I saw
who has got to be the most utilized and under-rated guitarist,
Waddy Wachtel. This guy must hold the "record" for most supporting
performances, both live and in the studio. Recalling from memory I
know he has "supported" Linda Ronstadt, Rosanne Cash, Stevie Nicks,
Tom Petty and Keith Richards. I am sure this is only a very small
list of his credentials. Can anyone add to it? Suggest who else has
such a deep portfolio without having a "main-street" band of his own?
And the guy never seems to age..

I think Waddy also did a stint with James Taylor and someone else, like
Jackson Brown maybe...mmmmm...maybe not. I can't think of who it was right
now. He was showing up all over the place for a time in the early 80s.
Although I always thought he as a very competent sideman, I can't recall
ever hearing him do anything memorable or noteworthy.

Waddy is definately one of those studio guys who's played on more
records than even he could remember. He is a versitile player,
but most of the people he's worked with are too 70's wishy-washy
me. Keith is the coolest due he's ever worked with, I think.

He was the one who played that annoying solo on that Steve Perry
(ex-Journey) tune; "Oh, Sherrie" was the title I believe.

Waddy also played with Warren Zevon on a few LP's and tours. He also
had/was in a band of his own called Ronan (I think). I have the LP and
saw them at the Paridise in Boston. Great guitarist!

While reading the liner notes from Melissa Etheridge's lastest CD
I noticed that Waddy is listed as supporting her as well. I'll bet
he has quite a few interesting stories accumulated over the years.
