Interesting that an issue like this would get him worked up enough to
use some expressive language. John is probably smiling, somewhere.
Visual images of violence are OK, but the spoken word gets slapped
down...hmmm....sounds like the time is right for reforming the Fugs (or
at least David Peel and the Lower East Side). Perhaps MTV doesn't want to
get in dutch with Tipper and the PMRC ?
It'll be interesting to hear Mr. Mac's reaction to the snit. I *hope* he
doesn't stoop to putting out a 'sanitized' version.

Linda brought in the coffee and they rabbited on in just-plain-folks mode
about their children, their move into food retailing and so on.
Actually, his hit "Deliverance" is pretty good, as was the collaboration
with Elvis Costello on "Pads, Paws and Claws". None of the other stuff
off the new album sounds much good.

Well, since I appear to be the lone MUSIC noter that attended this
show, let me say that Paul and Gertrude have a good one going this
time. The show's pace never slows too much, the sound was excellent,
and the stage work was exciting at the right times, without being
intrusive in the wrong places. I personally could've done without the
animal torture propaganda at the beginning of the show, 'cause I
already know about that stuff, but if it enlightens anyone, then I guess
it's useful.
Face value on the ticket was $75, I paid a little bit more, and with a
bit of maneuvering, we ended up in the fourth row, a little stage left
of center. I'd recommend you catch the show if you haven't seen Paul,
yet. $75 may sound like a lot for a ticket, but can you "imagine" what
a ticket to see John Lennon perform would cost? You never know how
much time we really have left...

$200 ? $325 ?
If I believed this story, I would have said
1. Paying a ticket three times, four times its face value is
ridiculous.
2. Are you proud of it ?
3. You are promoting scalping.
4. It is illegal.
But I don't believe it, so I don't have to say any of those.

Note 625.117 Mccartney Tour 93 ! 117 of 128
COMET::BERRY "Dwight Berry" 147 lines 30-MAY-1993 15:40
-< Boulder, Colorado review of the New World Tour >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, here is my experience and thoughts of Paul's concert... and my only time
ever to see a Beatle in person. This is kinda long, but it could be longer!!!
Got to Boulder in the early afternoon. Boy was it windy! About 80mph gust and
damn near constant! Cloudy and sprinkling too. But by about 4pm, it was
pretty nice. The sky lightened up and by rehearsal time, there was little to
no wind.
Brenda and I arrived so early that we strolled around and got inside places
that we weren't supposed to be as the Folsom Stadium security people had not
shown up. At one point, we were told by a security weenie that we needed to go
get our shirts, (Paul McCartney Security shirts), and put them on! They
thought we worked there! Course, we told the truth and had to wait at a gate
like everyone else. For those that aren't aware, Folsom Stadium is on the
campus of the University of Colorado. And this campus and Boulder is described
as a "yuppie" town. We got parking IMMEDIATELY outside the stadium in what was
supposed to cost us $5, but we 'slipped' in for free! It did take us over an
hour to leave the parking area and the traffic home was terrible. It should
have taken about 2 hours to get back home but took 4 hours!
Waiting outside the gate around 5pm, we heard Paul McCartney and crew start
their warmup! They did only a couple of songs from the concert and mostly did
other tunes, and boy did they sound great!!! They played for one whole hour
just warming up! Everyone outside waiting was enjoying the music.
We bought a tee-shirt each, $25 a pop, and a couple of buttons of Paul, ($3
each), and another booklet that cost us $15, (was disappointed with the photos
inside it). They also had caps for sale for $25 each and a silver pin that
said, "Paul McCartney New World Tour" for $10. So bring lots of cash!
SOME FACTS FROM THE BOULDER NEWSPAPER
-------------------------------------
- 33 truckloads of equipment transformed the University of Colorado's Folsom
Field into a concert wonderland for Paul McCartney's World Tour Show.
- This was the first concert at Folsom since 1989.
- The crews arrived in town 8 days early to start preparing.
- 11,000 sheets of plywood, ($40,000 worth), was used to cover the football
field field and set up stage supports for lights and sound.
- 100 portable toilets and 30 temporary drinking fountains were installed.
Back to my experience...
------------------------
The stage was huge! One guy who saw Michael Jackson said, "Wow. This is
bigger than Michael Jackson's stage!" Oh, they gave us a nice program as we
entered the stadium. They asked us how many we wanted. We wound up taking
four. We also got some little "free" McCartney binoculars too. Course, we
each had some real binoculars. We loaded up with popcorn, cracker-jacks,
pepsis, peanuts, and hot-dogs, and made our way to our seats. We had good
seats on the floor in the second section back. When people got to their feet,
Brenda at 5 feet even had a hard time seeing, but I put my backpack on the
ground and she stood on it and managed to see pretty good.
The structures surrounding the stage were LOADED with laser lights! There were
THREE screens on each side of the stage. These showed the film footage that
started off the show, but because of the curfew(sp?), the show had to start at
8pm and so they were sorta washed out by the light that still existed.
Luckily, the large screens that was under cover behind the stage showed the
film just fine. The show was scheduled to run to 10:34pm and it did EXACTLY
that!
The film started with the soundtrack of "HELP!" and footage from that film.
There were footage from other videos of Paul's too, along with other songs,
(see note 625.38). The songlist from note ".38" is about the same exact list
except that instead of "I WANNA BE YOUR MAN" in the first group, he played
"CAN'T BUY ME LOVE". I'm glad.
The crew came on stage right after the films finished and the crowd was wild.
Paul and company were dressed pretty nice, suit fashioned, nice jacket and
trousers. Only Linda wore jeans. Everyone was on their feet with DRIVE MY CAR
and stayed there until PEACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. They had been on their feet
for six songs and chose this one to rest and sit down. I wondered how Paul
felt about that. I had always thought LET ME ROLL IT was okay, but man, this
band made me really like this song. I can't say enough how GREAT this band
sounded and how terrific Paul's voice was! Even in the songs where he got soft
and high, his voice NEVER CRACKED ONCE! I leaned over and said to the man next
to me, "Man, at 50 years old this guy CAN STILL WAIL!" and he nodded in total
agreement.
The lighting on the stage was super and Paul had lots of the "smoke" effect
around him throughout the concert. There were several BIG video cameras
mounted back in the crowd so I hope Paul uses some of this footage in a later
video.
Now don't get this wrong, the people DID LIKE Paul's new material. OFF THE
GROUND found them sitting down again, but it did bring on cheers from the
crowd. I figure that the newer stuff isn't in most homes and so they aren't as
familiar with it. YESTERDAY is really the only slow song that had the entire
stadium on it's feet. I remembered making that point to my wife.
I love EVERYNIGHT, and though BIKER LIKE AN ICON has gotten some criticism in
here, this crowd LOVED IT. They WERE on their feet for this one! I think the
beat and fast pace might have done it. Dunno. HOPE OF DELIVERANCE was also a
welcomed new song.
And of course, LIVE AND LET DIE with the cannons going off... the dense puffs
of smoke from the cannons, and the fireworks display that seemed to last for
minutes, had this stadium crowd of about 38,000, (nearly filled according to
the paper), really to kill! The sound was just excellent and the heavy bass
was felt throughout our bodies!
During the piano set, after LET IT BE, the stage got dark and a single spot was
on Paul. He said, "I need my magical piano" and started whistling for it to
come to him like a dog. Far to the right, a large square shaped image was
brightly lit up with the wildest and brightest colors, (his piano), and it came
to him as though it was walking. It got in front of him and he said, "Sit" and
it dropped down. Neat! The crowd was enjoying this. Then they struck up
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR and these people were going crazy, (okay, me too)!
During the show, many CLOSEUPS of Paul and the band were on the six screens
around the stage and at other times, brightly colored patterns would be
displayed here on other curtains that would raise and lower. During C'MON
PEOPLE, much of Linda's work as a photographer was displayed here of people she
had shot from the past from Janis Joplin to Hendrix to the Beatles themselves.
The final two photos were a large one of Paul on the left from his McCartney
album and a shot of John on the right with long hair and glasses. The crowd
cheered at this!
SGT PEPPER. What can you say? I have always loved the way Paul and company
does this song and the way they tie the reprise together. Man, is this upbeat
or what!!! As I sit here, I can feel it beating through my body! I'm glad
it's not the draggy way he sometimes did it last tour. It was VERY UPBEAT and
feisty! Makes you wanna go kick a** and take names! Know what I mean?!? This
also had the same effect on the crowd and they were on their feet jumping and
screaming!
BAND ON THE RUN also was a big crowd pleaser along with I SAW HER STANDING
THERE. And HEY JUDE... Some people say they are getting tired of it but those
people were NOT at Folsom Stadium on May 26th! This was one song the 38,000
surely came to hear! During the bit where Paul had the stadium singing along,
they got on a crane which took them out over the crowd... then came back for
the big finish!
I could talk about all the other great songs Paul did, but I'll stop here.
This note is long enough now. Did I enjoy it? Does a wild bear pee in the
woods?!? I'd love to see him again and again! I'm a McCartney fan, big-time.
You got a bone to pick with Paul you've got to go through me first! This is
the best concert I've ever seen and I'm sure no other performer will have the
effect on me that McCartney's music and talent has had. I play Beatle and
McCartney stuff ALL THE TIME. Just ask my wife. This concert was also VERY
SPECIAL for her to. She's almost as big a fan as me!
For those of you who will be attending his future shows, you're in for one Hell
of a good time! Enjoy!

McCartney still knows how to dazzle
Older hits strike a chord with crowd
------------------------------------
Paul McCartney is praised because "Yesterday" is the most-played song in
history. And he's criticized because some stadium shows on his current tour
haven't been sold out. The fact is, McCartney's been touring nonstop for two
years of yesterdays, and it shouldn't be surprising that some huge stadiums
aren't selling tickets for McCartney like Radio City Music Hall sold them for
Bette Midler.
When the cute Beatle played at Boulder's Folsom Stadium Wednesday, 38,000
enthusiastic fans showed up, nearly selling out the mammoth venue.
REVIEW
------
What they received for their $37 was a journey through McCartney's musical time
tunnel, with everything played bigger than life. Enormous speaker columns
doubled as movie screens, alternately showing live-action video for faraway
fans and myriad images flashed by projectors.
The concert began with a video montage. While a recording of "Help!" played,
classic footage of the Beatles' early years was shown. But as the video
progressed, McCartney used the medium for a disturbing look at cruelty to
animals. He was definitely going for shock value when, during taped playings
of "Helter Skelter" and "Live and Let Die," images of abuse flashed behind the
stage. An electrocuted elephant, chickens having their beaks clipped, and
other examples of cruelty shoved McCartney's vegetarian lifestyle down the
audience's collective throat. When it was over, logos for his favorite
charities, Greenpeace and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals among
them, pulsed.
Then it was showtime. McCartney, looking, singing, and acting half his 50
years, glided onstage with his band and launched into "Drive My Car," making
many of the audience members swoon as they remembered the '60s.
The concert was decidedly weighted toward McCartney's --and his fans'-- past.
Songs from his latest album, "Off the Ground," were sprinkled into the set, but
he had to feel disappointed when the audience members who had been standing up
throughout the set, all the way through "Let Me Roll It" (from "Band on the
Run") chose "Peace in the Neighborhood," from the new album, to sit down.
They stayed seated through the title track.
Knowing how to get them back on their feet, McCartney said, "OK, that was a
couple new songs -- this one definitely isn't." With that, he started "Can't
Buy Me Love." The song had the right effect, getting people back into the show
and keeping them there.
The band McCartney assembled did his music justice. He most often played bass
guitar, but periodically surrendered that job to Hamish Stuart. Guitarist
Robbie McIntosh added lead guitar. New drummer Blair Cunningham and
keyboardist Wix Wickens rounded out the lineup.
Except, of course, for McCartney's wife, Linda. Musically, she was more or
less a stand-in, since she appeared to be playing some keyboards and shaking
tambourine and even singing although she was buried in the mix. She shined
brightest through the collage of her photographs that appeared on the screens
during "C'Mon People," another new song. Three-story photos of Jimi Hendrix
and Janis Joplin provided visual backing to the song. The photos shown at
song's end were of McCartney and John Lennon, which prompted a roar from the
audience.
Of course, McCartney played "Yesterday," prefacing it with, "Here's one you
might remember." His voice was in fine form for it, and for all the other
classics. An acoustic version of "We Can Work it Out," a funny new song about
loving someone on the wrong side of the tracks called "Biker Like an Icon,"
"Let It Be," "Long and Winding Road," and "Paperback Writer" were the songs the
crowd came to hear. His renditions were flawless.
The concert's best moments included "Magical Mystery Tour" and the
show-stopping "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band/The Sgt. Pepper Reprise."
His emotional encore of "Band on the Run," "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Hey
Jude" capped a fantastic 2 1/2 hour show.
But is was the performance halfway through the concert of "Live and Let Die" --
punctuated with bursts of flash pods and fireworks -- that was worth the price
of admission.

Just to keep us all straight on the technology - the "laser lights"
referred to in .118 are commercially known as "varilites" -- and they
were used very effectively in the show I saw in Irvine. Also, the
critic should know that "flash pods" are more commonly known as "flash
pots".
I think these two reviews communicate the excitement of this show very
well. If you have a chance to catch this tour, do it!
BTW, Dwight - where'd you get your tickets??? *8')

Too bad about the frequent commercials-but without BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO'S

| Yep, I saw it. Taped it. That completed his U.S. tour. He cancelled some
cities, to my understanding. When I dubbed out the commercials, it was only
about an hour and a half worth of music. In reality, his show is 2 and a half
hours with NO breaks.
My observations were that Paul and band looked tired. Also, the sound wasn't
nearly as good as it was live in Boulder. Paul's voice seemed somewhat beaten
and strained. I think he's due for a break. The Boulder gig was nice. Great
sound... and I mean great. The band also sorta dressed up... suit fashion...
real polished look and sound. I know they taped it and I hope they use some of
that footage in a video later. I think they take a break and then pickup the
tour overseas again. Also, the heat and humidity was getting to them. After a
few songs, they quit showing closeups of Hamish as he was drenched! I'm from
Tennessee and I know what the heat is like. The sound wasn't nearly as good as
I remembered it when I saw them in Boulder. I also thought Paul's voice was
strained and tired where in Boulder, he voice was in perfect form. The whole
band seemed tired. I remember one shot where Linda was blowing air...
indicating the heat was too much. I think they're due for a break before
continuing the tour overseas.
During the song, C'MON PEOPLE, I was disappointed they didn't finish with
photos of John & Paul like in their other shows. I'd also like to have see the
entire film at the beginning that Paul showed us. But then, I want it all!
I also hated them scrolling credits over Hey Jude and not completing the song.
Some of Paul's new songs were replace last night with commercials. Drag. His
new album is really good. Too bad that the younger group today doesn't know
good music when they hear it. They think rap, (bad poetry), recited with an
angered look and waving the arms, along with computerized drums and music...
is what music is about.
Everyone that saw it that I've talked to loved it the show last night. I
enjoyed it, but after seeing the Boulder show, it was not quite up to that one.
Again, the tour, heat, and humidity may have worn them down a bit. At the
pianco, I noticed Paul wiping sweat off his face and fingers a bit... and he
took a towel to his face several times. Looked like a great crowd there!
It was classic McCartney.
I just hope that when I die they play McCartney/Beatles music in heaven, else I
don't want to go!
