The screech is treated like a trademark, stuck into every song. I
don't even care much for real sopranos, but what she does sounds more
like a falsetto trick than a real part of her natural voice, somewhat
reminiscent of Jayne Mansfield's work in "The Girl Can't Help It".

This reminds me of people and their attitude about dogs.
Some say, "I hate dogs. They're always coming up to you and licking
you and jumping on you and asking to be taken out for a walk."
Others say, "I love dogs. They're always coming up to you and licking
you and jumping on you and asking to be taken out for a walk."
I don't see that we need to have one note where people say, "Oh her
range is marvelous. I love the way she hits that high note," and a
completely separate note where other people say, "Well, her range is
technically impressive, but it makes my fillings hurt when she hits
that high note."
Mariah Carey has made her bed, let her sleep in it.

From 352.1:
Mariah Carey "puts more emotion into her vocals than any other
female pop star I can think of."

tagged on a screech to the end of Sgt. Pepper instead of a dog whistle

| Actually, why don't we talk about the current trend of the record
companies encouraging the careers of many people who "oversing"
virtually every song? Who, you ask? Well, how 'bout;
Michael I'm-passing-an-entire-loaf-of-French-bread-at-once Bolton
(especially his awful version of the Percy Sledge song, "When A Man
Loves A Woman").
Mariah Carey, who has incredible range, good looks, etc., but
constantly adds trills, squeals, etc., that (IMHO) cheapen her talent.
Whitney Houston, ditto above.
I'm sure there are more.................

| Mariah Carey is very young and pretty new at all this. All this
recognition came in response to her first record (ever to my knowledge).
Her abilities will mature with time. So I cut her some slack for
inexperience.
Whitney Houston, on the other hand, I don't think will ever change much.
I don't care for her approach to sing at all. Poor to no use of
dynamics.
Record companies are just big businesses. They push the careers of
anyone that they think can make records that appeal to vast
numbers of people.

I would disagree with this; her music uses dynamics very much,
particularly this last single that is getting played to death....the
one from the 'Bodyguard' film. Whether or not you like it, it is
very dynamic.

RE: .5
I have to disagree on your statement about Whitney. Imo, her
latest tune has zero dynamics - it's like turning the faucet on full
blast and letting it run wide open for 5 minutes. She's got
about as much emotion in her music as a stainless steel pot.
Her popularity really stymies me. I find myself liking & disliking
Mariah Carey. She can obviously sing quite well, and she has much
more emotion and feeling to her singing than Whitney.
I just find the high pitched vocals unecessary, they don't add any
value to her music imo.

The best Whitney Houston track I've ever heard is on the Material album
"One Down". I forget the title, but it's a ballad pairing Whitney with
saxophonist Archie Shepp. Long before she was a star, just another
anonymous (but talented) session singer.
Whintey fans might wanna skip searching this one out, since most of the
other stuff is typical Material: abrasive, noisy avant jazz/funk.

| Dave Barry (?is that his name) just finished running a contest on "the
worst song ever". His column, which appeared in last Sat/Sun Herald
Tribune was absolutely hilarious. His reader's overwhelmingly selected
as the worse song ever "MacArthur Park". One of the runners up that I
remember was Paul Anka singing "Having My Baby". Actually almost all
his "worsts" which I recognised were really awful (IMO) songs. I think
Mariah Carey was mentioned in the article but, from what I have read
here, she is not the type of artist I would normally listen to so I
don't even know if I've ever heard her. Do they play her on "Energie"?
He said there were many other "worst evers" nominated that definitely
deserved the award but they were so bad that they never became popular
enough to win the disclaim they deserve :-)

| RE: Whitney Houston on Material's "One Down"
I absolutely agree. I've mentioned this cut numerous time in this and
other Notes conferences. The song is Hugh (Soft Machine) Hopper's
"Memories" - also recorded by Robert Wyatt/Soft Machine.
This was first thing I ever heard by Whitney Houston, and I waited
patiently (in vain) to hear anything by her that even remotely
approached it.

| I hate the way her singing sounds, and I hate all the songs that by her
that I've ever heard.
Also, regarding her looks, although I agree she's reasonably
attractive, I think she dresses and looks like a slut.
Just my personal opinion. :-) We can't like everybody, can we?
