350.0. "Gerry Rafferty" by HGRD01::QA () Thu Jan 14 1993 03:10

    Gerry Rafferty, Anyone ?

In my opinion, his music is quite unique. I have not listened
to anyone that come closed to the music that he delivered.

Baker street and right down the line are among the classics
    songs of all time.

I came across a compilation record which has a track by him
and so probably a new song from him because I don't find it
in all of his albums (I have collected all of his records.)

The song title is "Don't give in on me". Anyone know which record
    is it from ?

For you trivia buffs, Gerry Rafferty was in a band called Stealer's Wheel.
I think the only hit they ever had was "Stuck In The Middle With You".

You mean "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in
the middle with you"?

Isn't that Bob Dylan?

It just sounds like Dylan - after he quit smoking. But if you're
trying to cover this tune to the max, have the vocalist start with
Dylan and kinda modulate back a couple of steps into a decent voice...

Yeah, Steven Wright called it "Dylanesque" in "Reservoir Dogs", which
supplies a great video clip for it.

Actually, it is a well known fact that Gerry Rafferty, Paul McCartney,
and Emitt Rhodes are one and the same person. As proof, I offer the
following: Has anyone every seen any two of these together? Come to
think of it, has anyone other than me ever even heard of Emitt Rhodes?

    Re: .11

Not only have I heard of him, I own one of his albums on cassette and
even have a copy of the sheet music to "Live Till You Die". A friend
had a copy of the Merry-Go-Round LP for A&M (Emmitt's earlier group).

And, yes, he sounds so much like Macca that you gotta wonder.

Wonder where he is today, the last LP I saw was maybe 74-75 time frame.

I have the Merry Go Round LP and each of his other three LP's. Don't
know what happened to him, or why none of his stuff has ever come out
    on CD.

Stealer's Wheel had a minor hit with their follow-up single "Star".
Not nearly as much airplay as "Stuck in the Middle with You", though.

I've heard about the accompanying sequence in "Reservoir Dogs", but
have yet to see the film. I'll have to catch it to compare and
contrast with the other boffo Harvey Keitel flick of 1992 - "Bad
    Lieutenant".

GR has a couple of early albums that preceded his Baker st. LP. These
albums have some real gems, such as "To Each and Everyone".

How was this new album compared to his early LPs, such as "City to
    City" and the "Night Owl".

I like every song on the "City to City" album but on the "Night Owl"
the most memorable were "day gone down" and "get it right next time".

IMHO, "City to City" should be his best. what do you think ?

350.17City to City is bestHLDE01::HIELKEMA_MThu Jan 21 1993 17:5612
I agree, he peaked with City to City. After that the albums
    were pleasant, but average.
I do like his earlier stuff. Stealers Wheel had some great songs.
Late Again from their debut album is a favourite of mine.
BTW he started with The Humblebums, a duo he formed with Billy
Connolly (the Scottish former folkie, now comedian).
They both wrote the songs, but the GR songs are the best.
Best songs are Steamboat row, Shoeshine boy and
Her father didn't like me anyway.

350.18His other bestHGRD01::STEVELIUThu Jan 28 1993 07:367

I think his 2nd best album will be either the "North and South"
    or the "Night Owl".

I like his "Sleepwalker" album too.

I like it very much. Good songs, good singing, BUT: the use of
electronic drums is annoying to my ears. I don't think it fits
to the kind of music Gerry Rafferty normally is identified
	with. I think it's a 'smart' producer's idea.
One thing I like about it, guitarist Jerry Donahue is only fea-
tured on one track. On all the earlier recordings he has been
playing the same riff again and again, that is bending one
string up & bending the same down again.
