326.0. "Arc Angels" by MSDOA::BLAIR (It's 11 years and I'm shiftin' gears) Thu Nov 12 1992 15:06

The Arc Angels have really grown on me. Any other fans? Also,
who is this Charlie Sextant(?) guy, and what else has he worked
    	on?

Charlie Sexton originally was the guitar player for Joe Ely. He then had
a brief career as a solo artist, and had one hit: "Beat So Lonely". Sorta
faded away after that until ArcAngels started to happen....

The Arc Angels will be at the Paradise in Boston on Wednesday,
    December 16th.

Did anyone catch them on the Tonight Show last night? They sounded
    pretty tight.

    re. .1

Charlie only played with Joe Ely's band as kind of novelty thing back
about 8-10 years ago. When he was in his early teens, like 11-13, and
he was giggin with Joe it was like "look at that little guy play guitar.
He's damn good." Jesse Sublett in those days, was Joe's primary guitar
    player.

Charlie's first band with a bunch of kid's his age was "The Eager
Beaver Boys." LA then caught up with him and tried to turn him into a
mega-star. Really outside of his blues background. That flopped and he
landed back in Austin a couple years ago (his brother Will, who also
has a band, lives here as well).

The bass player and drummer of the Arc Angels come from Stevie Ray
Vaughn's group (do they sound familiar?). Tommy Shannon and I can't
    remember the other guy's name.

The other guitar player is Doyle Bramhall Jr. Apparently he is
considered a real hot-shot player but I don't know too much about him.
Lately it was reported he had a drinking problem and was going through
    rehab.

I wish these guys the best...

I've only heard that he used to play with the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Did the
T-Birds tour with two guitar players, maybe?

ArcAngels are playing at the Paradise in Boston on December 16th, for a
bargain price of $8.50. Be there!!!

326.5maybe so...DPDMAI::VETEIKISWed Dec 02 1992 21:4817
re. Doyle Bramhall Jr. & The Thunderbirds

Hmmm, maybe how that is how he got his big reputation. That may have
been his father, seems I heard or read something about that.

The Thunderbirds had a bunch of different folks in the band over the
years. Jimmy Vaughn, as far as I know, was always pretty much their
main guy on guitar. You may be right, Doyle may have played back-up.

The interesting treat for many folks with the Arc Angels is that I
suspect people only know Charlie Sexton via the days when LA was
trying to make him into this mega-star thing (with no substance). Go
see him live with the Arc Angels, you'll be saying "this kid does have
    some substance."

    Have a good time.

326.6 Doyle worked closely w/Stevie Ray VaughanCGVAX2::PAGEOne World Is Enough For All Of UsTue Dec 08 1992 12:4712

I believe Doyle Bramhall's father was a drummer or something. He
may have played w/the T-Birds... it sounds familiar...

Doyle co-wrote some of the lyrics with Stevie Ray Vaughan on
Stevie Ray's last full album, "In Step" (his best, in my opinion).
I thought the lyrics on that album were miles above the lyrics on
Stevie Ray's other albums. That was my first exposure to Doyle.

"Huh?"	8^)

(They were loud as hell!!!!)

But it was a fantastic show last night. Doyle might try to be SRV Jr. a bit
too much, but he was still quite impressive, for sure! Charlie Sexton was
good in his own right, but not nearly as good as Doyle playing was (and I
also liked Doyle's vocals better also).

They had the place rockin', without a doubt!

For those who went, how was the opening set by the Poor Boys live?
BCN broadcast both their and Arc Angels set last night, and I liked
what I heard of it on radio.

Soundwise, Poor Boys actually came across better (less muddy) on the
airwaves, maybe due to less volume???

if you heard me on the radio!!)

I agree that Doyle was the best last night. BUT....Charlie floored

them next town they are in town!

Yeah, in fact I did hear someone ask where they were from, when they
answered. Were you also the person who kept yelling "sex palace"? :-)

ps. who saw what the Poor Boys were using for equipment? The guitar
    sounded killer!
326.15DPE::STARRThe elves are dressed in leather.....Thu Dec 17 1992 13:289
I didn't see what the Poor Boys had for equipment, but since I was about
5 feet in front of Doyle all night, I got a decent look at his gear. He
plays through 2 Fender Twin Reverbs (and they were *cranked*!). He mainly
plays Strats, he plays lefty and has them strung upside down. Charlie,
on the other hand, seemed to have a different guitar for almost every
song, including Strats, Teles, a Rickenbacker, and a Les Paul, and an old
hollow body Gibson, among others....

I was the one yelling "Mark Parento..."!! We must have all been
standing together, I was at center stage - right between Doyle
and Charlie - waving my drum stick and panting over Doyle!!!

I think my ears have finally stopped ringing!!
