I've been listening to a fellow named Kevin Welch lately. Anybody else heard him?
I saw him on Austin City Limits a few months ago, and on the strength of that
performance, picked up his album "Western Beat". I was not disappointed. Welch
writes terrific songs, and pulls in a few gems from other writers. Apparently he's
been known for a while in Nashville as a writer.
Western Beat is wonderfully recorded (in analog) and contains some super material:
"Something 'Bout You", "Same Old Rain", John Hiatt's "Train to Birmingham" and Joe
Ely's "Me and Billy the Kid Never Got Along". The band is super, with some of
Nashville's finest. No steel guitars, mostly acoustic rhythm, electric and
acoustic lead, mandolin by Kieran Kane, bass and drums.
I ran down his first album. Not quite as good, but it too has really grown on me.
Both albums are highly recommended.

| I saw that Austin City Limits too and I've since caught him on TNN's
American Music Shop. I believe that he did "Me and Billy the Kid Never
Got Along" with Joe Ely et al, on that show, no? Great performance. His
regular electric guitarist is on John Hiatt's Stolen Moments album. Mike
Henderson is it? After reading your -1, I think I'll get his album. I'm
a big Hiatt fan, too.

| I missed the American Music Shop you're refering to. He was on (I taped it) a
later edition of AMS with Bruce Cockburn, but he didn't do "Billy the Kid".
Mike Henderson is an interesting guitar player. Seems to use lots of open tunings
on electric and gets a big fat sound. He also contributed one song on "Western
Beat" and co-wrote one on Welch's first album.
Hope you like what you hear. Let me what you think.

Paul,
That's what I meant. I saw him do "Billy..." with Joe Ely on
Austin City Limits.

| I think he is from California orginally. He now lives here in Austin.
I'm glad you put this note in here because I've never gone to see him
play, though he is always at some club or another. Now I will.
