new album? : (something like) "if you think they can put a man on the
moon ..."

| Yes,
I think that's from "Drive" the latest single,I'll check tonight but
the line is definitely from the new album. The album itself is called
"Automatic for the People" , and is a bit more mellow...different in
style from "Out of Time" , relying less on guitar , but well worth a
listen

| I love the new album. I just bought it yesterday at lunch and have
listened to it twice and I'm very impressed. I bought the cassette,
actually, and I was dissapointed to see that the lyrics didn't come
with it. Could someone who bought the CD tell me if the lyrics were
with that?
I especially like the first song on the first side (forgot the name),
and I *love* the song Everybody Hurts (or is it Everybody Cries - both
phrases are sung in the song). It's beautiful!

| An unbelievably enchanting album.
These guys continue to amaze me. I am awestruck over and over on how
many great hooks they can come up with.
I went and saw REM live back about 80-81 after their first EP came out
and I couldn't convince anyone to go with me, so I went by myself. Had
a great time and been hooked ever since...

Oh, you're referring to me. I'm a big REM fan; I have all their
records, but Automatic For The People is too depressing. It's like
Michael Stipe's dog died so he got drunk and wrote some songs for
wallowing, with the exception of "Man on the Moon", and tracks 7 & 8,
whose names I forget. A couple of the other songs are decent, but half
I just can't listen to. The group really indulged Stipes's maudlin
side this time.

I like the change. I am actually impressed with these melancholy songs
by REM. They put me in a nostalgic mood -- and they are so much better
than the down-beat songs on their earlier albums.

The address for the R.E.M. fan club is:
R.E.M./Athens Ltd.
P.O. BOX 8032
ATHENS, GA 30603
It costs $10 per year to join the fan club ($12 if you live outside the
U.S.) You get the Christmas single (they record a different one every
year), information about the band, and usually a book or two, which
usually pertains to the Environment or some other causes. I'm not sure
what else you get; I've never joined, but I've always *meant* to join.

Ok, so what do folks think of MONSTER?
I like it, it's very catchy, but I wish they'd put lyrics sheets
in or that Michael would sing like a human being rather than some
kind of droning insect.
The first tune, "What's the Frequency Kenneth" is extremely catchy.
I can't get enough of it.
A real departure for REM.

| From what I understand, the phrase "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" was
uttered by one of the 2 individuals who beat up Dan Rather a few years
back.
I have no idea whether this has anything to do with the rest of the
song.

| Connie Chung was on 'BCN this am with Charles and they were asking
her whether it was true that Dan Rather had been having an affair
and he and his lover used 'What's the frequency Kenneth' as some kind
of code. So when the woman's husband (? boyfriend? whatever) found
out he assaulted Dan Rather and kept repeating that so Dan would be
sure to know where the assualt was coming from.
Connie denied it of course but you gotta' admit it makes for
amusing gossip.

Did anyone try to get tickets on Saturday for REM's concerts at
Great Woods? Were you successful?
I called Ticketmaster from 10 a.m. on, and finally got through at
11:30 only to be told both shows were sold out. Come on,
both nights sold out in 90 minutes? Seems like something
was not quite right here.
Anyone else have any luck?

>>> REM player (Billy, drummer?) with 2 brain aneurisms, one burst, recovering
....Bill Berry, the drummer. Apparently, collapsed holding his head, in
front of his drum kit during a show. He was helped off-stage, and
Michael Stipe then announced that he had a severe migrane and was
resting back-stage, the gig then continued without him.
The follwing day, an official announcement that he was recovering from
surgery on a brain haemorage (sp?) and would be playing the drums again
within weeks. All mainland Europe gigs have been postponed, but the UK
dates are to go ahead as scheduled.

I just got this from MTVonline:
Hi, I'm Kurt Loder with MTV News. It'll be delayed by 10 days -- but
R.E.M. will be launching its US tour next month. Monday afternoon, the
band announced that the kick-off date is now May 15th -- the city is San
Francisco -- and all originally scheduled shows prior to the 15th -- in
Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, and around Los Angeles -- will soon be
rescheduled. For a while -- following R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry's
emergency brain surgery in Switzerland on March 3 -- the band's tour was
very much up in the air. But Berry has reportedly made a remarkable
recovery -- he's now writing new material and rehearsing with the rest of
the group, and was feeling good enough to attend the final round of the
masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, last weekend
