302.0. "Spin Doctors" by CUPMK::T_THEO (No applause, just throw money!) Mon Oct 05 1992 14:29

So what's the dirt on the Spin Doctors? They've been playing the
spunk out of the tune "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" on the waves.
It's a great tune! I heard another cut called "Jimmy Olsen's
Blues", seems appropriate, the title of their album is "Pocket Full
    of Kryptonite"

Their style is along the lines of the Black Crowes, but cleaner. It's
good to hear some good'ole raunch and roll instead of the bubblegum
and metal cr*p of the 80's.

The only song I've heard so far is "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong."
Reminds me a lot of the Georgia Satellites too.

Jimmy Olsen's Blues is a great, great song - I darn near laughed my a$$
off! I am, however, sick to death of Little Miss Can't be Wrong - it's
playing every other time I turn on 'BCN!

So I went out and bought "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" based on their SNL
performance. I'd never heard "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" before
seeing them on TV... great tune.

This is a terrific album. I would say, though, that the earlier
reference to the Black Crowes doesn't hold for the whole record. Yeah,
there is a southern rock flavor to a couple of the tunes, but as
a whole, the Doctors seem to me to have a hard rock/funk kind of a
flavor. Great guitar player... definitely hear a large dose of Hendrix
in there. These guys remind me somewhat of Living Colour.

There's a live recording out. Anybody heard it?

Does "Little Miss..." remind anyone else of Bachman-Turner-Overdrive?
A stange comparison, but I can't help thinking of "Ain't Seen Nothing
Yet" or "Hey You" when I hear it.

Interesting comparison to BTO. I think what you're hearing is the
singer's voice kinda sounds like that of the guy from Spindoctors.
I missed the harmonies (almost throughout the WHOLE studio version of
the tune) on the SNL performance. They sounded very tight though.

    I like these guys..

hey, guess I'm an old guy, but the vocalist's tone and phrasing
reminds me a lot of Steve Miller(!). Also, it's nice to hear a lead player
that doesn't sound like Eddie VanH, Steve Vai, et al. Not that those guys
aren't incredible and everything, but good old bluesy R&R guitar in a three
piece blaster (plus vocalist of course) still works for me.

    Spin Doctor's only CD

In addition to the debut "Pocketful of Kryptonite," they just released
a new live album with, I believe, a couple new cuts ("Homebelly
Groove" I think is the name).

re: Spin Doctors (is this turning into the SD topic?)

They actually have 3 CDs: the studio debut, "Pocket Full...", which is
fabulous, and two live CDs. The new live release, out a few weeks now,
contains almost everything the first live CD did, remixed, plus a good
amount of material not on the first live CD. So, don't buy the first
live CD, buy the new one.

The Spin Doctors have a reputation of being a great live band. I've
never seen them live but hope to soon. However, I would have to say
that the live CD is a slight comedown compared to the studio disc. Not
bad at all, very good in fact, but slightly below what I was hoping for
after reading about their reputation for killer live performances.

302.15Need a review, yesterday!FILTON::JOLLIFFE_ACraven Choke PuppyTue Jun 22 1993 09:5815
Anyone who owns Homebelly, the live one, like to give some more details
    on what its like..?
Over here in the UK we have to pay twenty quid for the CD as an import
    - most CDs, including the Pocketfull one, are around 10-12 quid.
I thought the studio album was superb, especially the eleven minute
live jam which we got on the European version - if the live CD is as
good as that, i.e. extended jams and solos galore, I'll buy.

How long is Homebelly, are the tracks long jams or what?
    Any info/review much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Andy

Yes, Homebelly Groove is chock full of long jams. I bought it for
myself as a Christmas present and it's seen steady listening since.
Moreso than the studio stuff, I think this is where the Doctors are
    really at. Highly recommended.

302.17thanks - I'll buy!FILTON::JOLLIFFE_ACraven Choke PuppyTue Jun 22 1993 11:5017
That sounds good enough for me - the guitarist is really good, seems to
have some feel as well as technique, and is adept at the various styles
they employ - as a sometime player myself I think I'm going to enjoy
    this one...
Do they get bluesy on this one, as Eric Schenkmann(?) the git-player
seems to be able to pull off a good solo in this area?
I thought that the live jam I heard was vaguely reminiscent of Cream -
the bassist took a solo that was really cool, and his P-Funk style
elsewhere promises great things for the future of the band; they all
appear to be of a good standard of musicianship...

How long is the CD though, as I wasn't sure whether or not it was an
    EP?

(We're talking quite a bit of money here - and is Homebelly an official '2nd
    album' in the states?)

302.18LongNACAD::HERTZBERGHistory: Love it or Leave it!Wed Jun 23 1993 15:033
Don't remember exactly the numbers, but Homebelly pushes the limit of
how much you can fit on a CD. You won't be dissatisfied because of
lack of material, and it won't fit on one side of a C100.

302.20Hughey Lewis or Randy BachmannSUBSYS::GODINThu Jun 24 1993 12:2414
I can't listen to "Little Miss ..." because it reminds me of Hughey
Lewis. (Maybe if I concentrate on Steve Miller or Randy Bachman it'll
work.) The one with "If you, want to call me baby; just go ahead
now..." is great. That's the Spin Doctors too, right ? I was gonna name
my band The Spin Doctors until I heard of them back in spring of '92.
Another cool name down the tubes. Hey, maybe "The Tubes", or are they
    still together ?

I haven't heard anything by the Spin Doctors that reminds me at all of
Vernon Reid (Living Color). Is the live stuff really that different ?

No the live stuff isn't radically different from the studio work.

And as a big Vernon Reid/Living Colour fan, I have to say that I can't
see any similarity at all - but they are both good bands.

Maybe the reference was based upon hearing LC's Love Rears its Ugly
Head (the record companies always pick the most commercial tracks for
single release, and this one is probably the least representative of
Living Colour's work there is; it is however, a 'catchy' tune, as have
been the Doctors' singles) and nothing else.

I got the new one for Father's Day. These guys have such a good rhythm
section. And "Cleopatra's Cat" is just the coolest tune on the radio
today. On top of it's above-the-rim musical hipness, it has the best
jazz lyrics since Lambert, Hendricks and Ross recorded "Twisted".
