were talking about.

Tori Amos has an album recently out called "Little Earthquakes". The
reviews have been fabulous, though uniformly mention that her music is a bit
"out there", not exactly mainstream pop. There are frequent comparisons to
Kate Bush.
I actually have just bought the album but haven't had a spare minute
to listen to it yet. Sorry to have missed her on Dennis Miller, her single
piano act is supposed to be very emotional and truley incredible. FWIW she
was a child protegy pianist. For those interested there's a large interview
with her in this months KEYBOARD (cover story). She is quite outspoken.

MODERATOR: Perhaps this should be moved to a Tori Amos topic?

| It is a weird album. The style is very like Kate Bush. Some of the
songs are awful, but some are absolutely superb.
It is well worth getting.

| I heard she did a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but
sort of more in the style of the Cowboy Junkies. Anyone hear it?

She did indeed cover SLTS. I wouldn't exactly say in the style of
the Cowboy Junkies, though, other than it being mellower than the original
just like CJ's "Sweet Jane" was mellower than Lou Reed's.
One interesting aspect of her cover of SLTS is that you could
actually understand the words. :-)

That's because it was only on a limited number of discs, one in
particular must have been the one I imagined!

on that one. I cold be wrong, but who cares. ;7)

282.16 | Stunning album | USABLE::GOOD | Michael Good | Thu Jan 07 1993 12:42 | 8 |
| I finally got "Little Earthquakes" and find it a stunning album!
Sexual anger is stock in trade for many male pop singers, but it's rare
to hear it at this level from female pop singers. I don't see the
resemblance to Kate Bush, whose music I am not fond of, but I do hear
some slight musical (not lyrical!) resemblance to Jane Siberry in the
melodic lines and some of the layered vocal arrangements. Recommended
for people who want to hear an intense and individual singer/songwriter
and pianist.

| I only just learnt that 'Cornflake Girl' is by Tori Amos -
absolutely superb stuff! She _does_ play the piano part
in this song too - right? Great playing, greating singing,
and a great sounding instrument, too.
FWIW, she does indeed remind me a little of Kate Bush.
(as some previous replies mentioned, albeit a long time
ago, it seems!).

Yes, she does play the piano, a Bosendoerfer, in all her songs.
Listen to 'Little Earthquakes'!

| Does anyone know where I can get a copy of Tori's first album called
"Y Kant Tori Read"? I think it came out in 1986, and is considered a
major collector's item. The record stores in my area
(Maryland/Washington, DC) don't have it, but a few have said they've
seen bootleg copies on cd or vinyl, but even these are hard to find.

| No mention of Tori's latest, Boys for Pele, yet?
After a couple of listens, I'm somewhat dissapointed in it. No synths,
and too many songs with just her and her piano. I do like Caught a
Light Sneeze, though.
