| I remember a Village Voice article in last year's Paz & Jopp awards
issue (in which Nirvana was named band of the Year) where a writer
stated that now we would have thousands of bands trying to sound
like Nirvana but also thousands LESS sounding like Poi Dog Pondering.
Thank God.

I like it, though at first it seemed different from their earlier
stuff... maybe just slightly more "rock"y tha their previous albums,
I'm not sure. Also, I think there were a couple of minor personnel
changes, though the main people are still there. Overall, the album
_Volo Volo_, released in March(?), is a good one, with more fun
Poi tracks, and another annoying end to the CD, with a long whining
noise of some sort, similar to the one at the end of the last song
from _Wishing Lika A Mountain, Thinking Like The Sea_ (damn, can't
think of the song name... it will come to me after I enter this note,,
I'm sure...)

271.5 | Volo Volo a disappointment | BAVIKI::good | Michael Good | Mon Aug 03 1992 15:33 | 24 |
| I found Volo Volo a disappointment. Wishing Like a Mountain and
Thinking Like the Sea is one of my favorite albums, but Volo Volo
strikes me as much more generic. Far too often they lose the
great stew of sounds that marks their best work, and sound more
like an average alternative band. There are some good songs on
it, including some Hawaiian-influenced numbers, but overall it
retreats to about the same level as their debut album.
Another annoyance is that there's no lyric sheet included
in the album, but you can get one if you send away for one
and pay $3. I guess $11 or $12 a CD isn't good enough. That
type of thing just rubs me the wrong way.
Re .3: The drummer is different on Volo Volo, but I think the
rest of the group was intact for this album. Perhaps the big
difference is in the producers. They have lots of different
producers on Volo Volo and recorded all over the place, as
opposed to the one producer and the Austin-based recording they
did for their previous albums. The most generic-sounding songs
all tend to have the same producers.
Re .2: Poi is a taro-based starch, a traditional Hawaiian food.
It's an acquired taste at best for most non-Hawaiians, though I
liked it enough when we visited there.

Yeah, I thought this was annoying myself. By any chance did anyone get
the lyric sheet by mail? Is it worth the $$ ?
Also, there are a couple of songs with non-English lyrics. Does anyone
know what language they are in, and what they translate into English
as???

If anyone's "listening" to this note, just thought I'd mention that I
recently picked up the CD "EP" _Fruitless_, and I think it's pretty
good (maybe *** out of ****). It includes live versions of
"Fruitless," "Thanksgiving," "Wood Guitar," a Poi version of a song by
I believe New Order, and I can't remember what else. Anyway, if anyone
has seen this in the stores but didn't know if it was worth the money:
it is, if you like other Poi material. I bought it for $5 or $6 at
Tower Records in Boston.

Yeah, I found that a few months ago - the New Order song is _Love
Soldiers_. I like the live version of _Thanksgiving_ the most.

| Don't get me wrong, I like these guys, I do. Really loved the first album
(actually a combination of the two previously issued EPs), and I like the
second one, although there's a few too many lame tracks ("The Ancient
Egyptians"?!)
But one question: does anyone else find the singer (something Orrall)
to be totally annoying in concert? I found him to be trying so hard to be
pseudo-artsy, with his sub-StopMakingSense gestures and his
effeminate-jumping-bean hops. His voice is okay - it fits the songs pretty
well - but I kept wanting to smack him for trying to act cutesy.
I saw them in 89 at T.T.'s, and then in 90 at the T.L.A. in Philly.

| I've only heard two songs by these guys, and I liked one of them.
The other one, though, (I think it was the New Order song) nearly
drove me crazy 'cause it was so out of tune. The instruments not only
weren't very in tune with each other, but they were drastically out of
tune with the vocals. This was a shame. I liked the overall sound of
the song, but the out-of-tuneness made it almost unbearable to listen
to. Mind you, I'm no Donald Fagen when it comes to playing in tune.
I can handle a certain amount of not-in-perfect-tune (I used to listen
to a lot of old hillbilly music), but this song was just too much.

I'd like to know which song you think is out of tune, because I can't
remember any of their songs being unpleasant to listen to.
Any clue?

It might have been called something like "Love Vigilantes", but I'm not sure.
I believe the lyrics were about a soldier who came back home on leave and
found out that his wife had been notified by the army that he was dead.
Perhaps she committed suicide, I'm not sure.

RE - all
a few notes ago I said the New Order song was "Love Soldiers". must
have been smoking something ( and inhaling ) - it's "Love Vigilantes",
and I don't think it's THAT out of tune. Certainly not enough to make
me cringe, although I don't think it's that wonderful a cover of it.
