| A couple of Friday nights ago I when to a rundown Chinese restaurant on
the edge of a working class section of town (Charlotte, NC). I had
heard rumors. I had seen his picture of the front cover of one of the
local entertainment/nightlife newspapers. I had only dreamed of the
what the experience might be like. But I was brave.
As I approached the door, I heard the rock'n sounds that had stirred a
generation. Inside, every table was packed. the variety of people was
amazing. Several photographer acquaintances were sitting at a large
table in the middle. My music instructor was there. A Filipino
family sat near the door. and in the far corner were several ladies
wearing large polyester floral print blouses (with the associated "big
hair").
I sat down. the woman behind me said "I was 7 years old when Elvis
first made it big". At that moment, I knew I was in trouble. My
music instructor later told me that this woman sitting behind me had
brought the singer a bunch of gifts. When the waitress came to get my
drink order. I noticed her T-shirt had a 29 stamp on it. It wasn't a
picture of the young Elvis or the Old. It was something new.
Something different. Something that tore at the fabric of the universe
itself.
In from of me stood RenElvis. the face of a middle-aged Filipino
parking garage attendant, the voice of the king, and the karoake
equipment of a master impersonator. He sang them all (except Viva Las
Vegas). He synched his song with videos. He had costumes that rivaled
any one in the audience. He even faked playing the guitar.
I laughed. I cried. I had an emotional experience that rivaled any sex
that I had had that evening. If you're ever in Charlotte and RenElvis
is playing, run, don't walk, to see him. It's the closest thing to
heaven on this earth. Indulge yourself!
later,
douglas
PS: In between sets, RenElvis played his own original music. In a
twisted way it kinda sounded like Depeche Mode with Elvis singing...
Hmmm!

no idea where to go to see RenElvis! So that's what you do in
Charlotte for a hot time! I thought the point of Charlotte was to
drive around being lost whilst listening to the big ole hairy fox!
Gee, what I'm missing as I sit here tonight playing with my new toy!
Come up to the Aquarius Room and introduce yourself...

I like Tortelvis, who does the lead vocals for Dread Zeppelin.
Sounds amazingly like the real Elvis.

On the day Elvis died (assuming he did) I was on a business trip in
Albuquerque. After a day of work, I ambled into the bar for a cold one and
started talking to a guy sitting next to me. We get to talking about Elvis
and he asks me if I've ever heard the guy that was performing in the lounge
that night. Well, I hadn't and I asked him why..turns out the guy was an
Elvis impersonator who had been scheduled for that evening, which may have
explained some of the TV cameras and reporters hanging around.
At any rate, the guy I'm talking to says he knows the impersonator (who's name
was Bobby Freeman) quite well, and he invited me to join he and his wife and
another couple at a table near the stage. Having nothing better to do in
Albuquerque, I said why not. It turned out this guy put on a pretty powerful
and emotional show which had many people in the audience stunned. I was
pretty impressed with the guy.

| I used to play in a band with a guy who started in the business as an
Elvis impersonator. He expanded his repertoire to John Lennon (had a
Sgt. Pepper suit for that) and we also did some mainstream beefcake
rock. Last I heard he was working for Hanna-Barbera as a cartoonist.

| GAKKK!!! It's the revenge of Elvis Impersonators ...
After surviving 2+ years in an Elvis Impersonator band, I still get
that "All Shook Up" feeling in my lower intestines when I hear
the dulcet tones of the "King" ...
(QUESTION: would more than one Elvis impersonator be considered as Elvi ??)

| Down near the borderline in San Diego, I witnessed a single genuine Mexican
Elvis Impersonator called ELVI. Last I heard he was giving his
compadre Jose Sinatra a run for his pesos in the San Diego latin
pseudo-crooner biz (a real growth industry).
Be sure to wiggle your hips down to any club either of these two may be
playing at if you find yourself in S.D. Definitely worth a look......
