Mike,
I heard this on the radio (101.7, WFNX). Not sure what
the shows will be like. Townshend did mention in a
Musician magazine interview that he would like to perform
acoustic versions of "A Quick One," "Quadrophenia," and
"Tommy" all in one performance. Please post here if you
hear anything else.

248.13 | Pete Townsend @ Great Woods last night | QRYCHE::STARR | Is it raining in your bedroom? | Tue Aug 10 1993 16:30 | 72 |
| Anyone else attend the Pete Townsend show at Great Woods last night? It was
at first great, then disappointing, the exhilirating! (With substantial reason
for the disappointing part.... read on!)
The audience were the indirect winners last night, courtesy of several
technical problems that plagued the show. First, this was the only arena-sized
show that Pete is playing on this tour (all the others have been theatres).
So they had to waste time until the sun went down before launching into
the latest album ('Psychoderelict'), since the performance of 'Psychoderelict'
includes screen projections (and onstage actors). So while waiting for it
to get dark, Pete played a myriad of hit songs from both The Who and his
solo albums.
About 45 minutes into the show, it was appropriately dark, and they started
the 'Psychoderelict' portion of the show, intending to run through the story
from beginning to end. However, about 4-5 songs into it, they ran into
problems with the on-screen projections, and Pete stopped the show (in
mid-song!), apologized to the crowd, and said they would play some other
material while the problem got straightened out. (They then played a
magnificent 15-minute version of "Magic Bus" that probably would have been
more at home at this past weekend's H.O.R.D.E. festival! Along with "You
Better You Bet" and brilliant, rocking "A Little Is Enough".)
In the meantime, Pete was getting obviously furious with the technical
problems; at one point you could see him yelling at the crew, and then
stormed off the stage (I could swear that he came *this* close to smashing
a guitar - and it probably would have been over someone's head!).
After a few minutes of dead air onstage (with the poor band wondering,
audibly, "what's going on?"), Pete came back and announced that they wouldn't
be able to complete the full production, and would just play some selections
from the album; which they proceeded to do, sans projections and actors.
This was a shame, since I really love the 'Psychoderelict' album, and was
really getting into the presentation! (Luckily a friend of mine taped the
pay-per-view on Saturday night, so I'll still get to check it out on tape.)
Well, to make a long review a little shorter, here's a listing of some of
the non-'Psychoderelict' songs they played (in no particular order):
"Anyway, Anyhow, Anyway" (acoustic)
"My Generation" (acoustic)
"The Kids Are Alright" (acoustic)
"Pinball Wizard"
"See Me, Feel Me"
"Eminence Front"
"You Better You Bet"
"Who Are You"
"Magic Bus"
"Won't Get Fooled Again" (acoustic opening)
"Behind Blue Eyes" (acoustic)
"Rough Boys"
"Let My Love Open The Door"
"Face To Face"
"Save It For Later" (acoustic opening)
"A Little Is Enough"
"Girl From The North Country"
"I Am An Animal"
"Heart To Hang On To"
"Until The Rivers Run Dry"
The show ran about three hours, and was truly amazing! Pete must have been
feeding off his anger, as he whipped around the stage (and whipped his
arm in that trademark guitar-playing move!), acting 20 years younger than
he looked! The band, taken from the cream of British-touring musicians,
included Phil Palmer and Andrew Fairweather-Low on guitar, Pino Palladino
on bass, Simon Phillips on drums, John "Rabbit" Bundrick on keys, and
Katie Kissoon on backup vocals (along with another vocalist and a harp
player, both of whose names escape me). While it was a shame that we didn't
get to see the full 'Psychoderelict' production, I don't think anyone
went home complaining!

Yes, I was there also. The projector failure was straight out of
Spinal Tap; you could see stagehands being hauled up and down the
rigging behind him. The system wasn't working right from the beginning
of the show, so they had plenty of time to work on it before
Psychoderelict. It was a bit of a disappointment, I was dying to see
how they'd dramatize the "witch's teats."
I'm also looking for a hi-fi vhs copy of the pay-per-view special. I
have stuff to trade, if anyone can hook me up.

One surprise was that he ignored material from "All The Best Cowboys

| I caught the show too, and was reminded of Spinal Tap when the
projector started having problems. You'd think they'd just shut
it off. Pete did look like he wanted to splinter his guitar at
that point.
At any rate, he bounced back. Highlights for me were "Heart to
Hang on To," "A Little is Enough," and "You Better You Bet," which
I always thought sounded more like a Townshend solo song than a Who
song. "Magic Bus" was interesting, too. I thought the songs from
the new album sounded good. "Girl from the North Country" was a
nice suprise too.
Although he didn't play anything from "Chinese Eyes" or
"Quadrophenia" for that matter, but he did cover alot of ground.
I had heard he was doing "A Quick One" at some shows. Now that
would've been interesting.

| I was at the show, and there is a great story of how I got tickets, but
to make it short, I did't have tickets until I got to GW, and when I
did get there (15 MINUTES BEFORE IT STARTED), I was able to buy from
the ticket booth 3RD ROW, SECTION 1 (to the right of the stage). I
couldn't believe how close I was! I was able to see, up close, Pete's
reaction to the technical problems. It was GREAT! He was absolutely
Bull S___! I bet 15 years ago, he would have not come back to perform.
As the other replys noted it was an excellent show. I too was
disappointed about the lack of Chineese Eyes material, but he
definitely made up for it.
The only disappointing thing I caught, and this is purely a personal
feeling, was that Pete has started drinking again! He was sober for at
least 10 years. I read an article in Time Magazine a few weeks ago
that said he fell off the wagon about 6-7 months ago, but has since
stopped drinking. It's too bad he went back off. I hope he's alright
with whatever he's going through.

| Townsend's Anger Ignites Explosive Rock
---------------------------------------
by Steve Morse
Boston Globe
The tantrum may still be raging for all we know. The Who's Pete Townsend,
peeved that some multi-media screen projections didn't work Monday night
(thus disrupting the largest show on his tour), promised the "definitive
artist's tantrum" once the show ended.
"I will kill people", Townsend said through gritted teeth to the 10,000 fans
at Great Woods. "We have this unbelievably expensive technology that won't
[expletive] work."
God only knows what tongue-lashing his technical crew received, especially
since the glitches forced Townsend to scrap most of his new rock opera,
'Psychoderelict'. But the screwup actually led to an incredibly free-form,
improvised rock show, as Townsend reeled explosively from Who songs to solo
tunes, from the flat-out mania of "Magic Bus" (a classic since the Woodstock
days) to a surprisingly tender cover of Bob Dylan's "Girl From The North
Country". Townsend did the Dylan ballad, he said, because it reminded him
of his family at home in England (he has three kids), far away from the
craziness of the road.
Although he suffered from a cold and was nearly ballistic at his stage crew,
Townsend used Monday night's show at rock therapy. He played for three hours
nonstop (nary a soul left the arena during that time) and ended up only adding
to his legacy as one of rock's most tumultuous, most cantankerous figures.
His show started slowly. He tossed off some Who tunes (a great "Behind Blue
Eyes", a bad "Pinball Wizard", a drudgily acoustic "Kids Are Alright") some
solo tracks (a solid "Rough Boys") and an impressive emotional tune ("Heart
To Hang On To") from his collaborative 'Rough Mix' album with Ronnie Lane
in 1976.
The came the ill-fated 'Psychoderelict' songs. He did only a few tunes from
this pungent tale about a burned-out rocker who finds new life (with three
actors playing the roles of the rocker, his manager, and a nosy disc jockey)
before the screen projections failed and Townsend blew up.
To his credit, he fought through it and used rock'n'roll as his escape valve.
Although a bit hoarse from his cold (and wiping his nose repeatedly), he
blistered through "Magic Bus" (dual guitarists Phil Palmer and Andy
Fairweather-Low also blazed behind him), then hit a transcendent level with
The Who's "You Better You Bet", which had the crowd waving fists in support,
knowing that Townsend had found a second wind.
The nirvana continued. Townsend, slamming out guitar chords with his patented
windmill motions, roared through "Just A Little Is Enough", "English Boy" (a
crunching, Who-like rocker from 'Psychoderelict'), the English Beat's "Save
It For Later", and Who tunes "Who Are You", "Face To Face", and "Won't Get
Fooled Again".
His band also rose to his intensity. Drummer Simon Phillips pounded out
grooves with abandon, harp player Peter Hope-Evans ran around the stage like
a lunatic and backup singer Katie Kissoon (who has toured with Eric Clapton
and Van Morrison) pushed Townsend to even greater heights.
He finally let the crowd go with a sterling acoustic treatment of "My
Generation", then a climatic "Eminence Front". By this time he was like a
stick of dynamite, but the show proved once again that an agitated Townsend
may be the best Townsend of all.

I'd love to get a copy, if there were any stealth tapers there . . .
The Who's movie, The Kids Are Alright, has been re-released after
bbeing unavailable for years. There's an added bonus track of the
title song, but it's just a lip-synch promo tape, no big deal. The
movie itself is as powerful as the band. My favorite scenes are:
Their performance of "My Generation" on The Smothers Brothers show.
They plow through it, smash up the gear, and blow up the drum kit. Then
Pete (I think) grabs Tommy Smother's acoustic guitar out of his hands
and smashs that too.
An interview done for German TV. The interviewer asks Pete a very
long pretentious philosophical question. Pete ponders this for a
minute and replies "Uhhh . . . yah." The German subtitles make it
even funnier.

Do you know if the restored the complete version of "A Quick One"? I remember
when I saw the movie on its theatrical release, they had Brian Jones
introducing the band. But the video release skips that part, and starts
halfway into the song.

It's interesting that this clip, from the never-to-be-seen Rolling

include it at all, but I don't understand why it had to be shown with

The original version has Brian Jones (wearing a big top hat) introducing the

No, it hasn't. I think this was a quickie re-release to capitalize on
Tommy on Broadway. To be fair, much of it was from 60s TV programs, and
TV has never cared much about sound quality.
Most of the Who's albums have sound or mix problems. In fact, can
anyone tell me if the MFSL version of Quadrophenia is better mixed than
the original? How about the re-mixed one CD version of Tommy?

The videotape has a cut version of "A Quick One" as you described.
There's no intro, it begins with the "clang, clang . . ." bridge.
I've watched it twice and still can't spot Rick Danko in the film.
He's listed as appearing after Steve Martin, but I can't find him.
There's a prescient scene in the film which shows Pete joking with
Keith about a hearing test he's just had. The punchline was that the
doctor advised him to learn how to read lips.

I saw this in New York about three weeks ago. I guess
a recommendation depends on what you expect. It has
great music which is well performed (in NY at least),
good dancing, costumes, sets, and unbelievable special
effects. It is VERY entertaining. However, the story is
absolutely impossible to follow, as are most of the
lyrics (even for those of us who knew them beforehand).
The group I was in was split between those who cared
about the story and those who didn't and enjoyed it for
the entertainment's sake.

| I saw "Tommy" in Boston last Friday night, and I have to agree with
.44: a religious experience. Just flat excellent - music, dancing,
singing, sets, sound, everything.

| Saw Saturday's show in Boston... The music was wonderful, the band was hot!!
Plus it was nice that they kept it as a rock band (plus french horn) and
didn't try to rewrite it all for an orchestra with a guitar tacked on.
But I would have liked it better as a concert than a play. Some of the
dramatic action seemed kind of contrived to me. And the singing and acting
was ok, but not nearly as exciting as the (instrumental) music.
The other thing that bothered me was that the "message" was completely
changed. Originally Tommy discovers something mystical while deaf/dumb/blind
and tries to get people to look within themselves to find it. In the play,
the lyrics of several songs were changed so that Tommy's discovery is the joy
of being able to experience everyday life. Maybe if it had been written that
way in the first place...but it wasn't, and I found the new lyrics jarring.
It kind of spoiled the second act for me...

248.47 | Pete being honored | CSLALL::MKELLY | | Wed Feb 09 1994 09:46 | 7 |
| I heard on the radio yesterday that Pete was to be honored by Carnigie
Hall at the end of the month. I thought I heard that Roger was
organizing it, and would include many of the rock and roll elite.
Anyone else know of this and can provide more details.
Thanks,
Mike

| Is there anyone out there that saw the PPV Event Saturday. I ordered
it, but didn't receive it. I heard songs like "The Song is Over" and
"A Man is a Man", were there any other surprises?
Thanks,
Mike

| It was OK. Not great. Entwistle came out for a couple songs, 5:15 then
left? Towshend only did a copule too, then left. Alice Cooper was good.
Not many guests. Spin Doctors were ok. The girl from 4 Non Blonds was
on too much. Who else?

An aside - I was in a Strawberries a week or so ago, and heard The
Who's "Substitute" come blasting over the store's sound system. I
listened for a moment, then realized it wasn't The Who doing it. I
asked the kids behind the counter who was playing, they said,
simultaneously "The Naked Eaters"/"The Ramones", then "Great song!".
I said, old fart that I am, "the orginal's by The Who". Blank stares.

I remember that The Who did a live version of 'Substitute' -
with Simon Phillips on drums, since Keith Moon was not able
to play ;-)..
Now, Simon is a GREAT drummer, with a particular more jazzy
style than the one of Keith's, BUT: he destroyed this fabu-
lous song completely, by using the closed high hat in a 'mo-
dern rock' style, whereas Keith Moon banged away on the cym-
bals through the whole song - which IMO is one of the key
points in this song...
