242.0. "Toy Matinee" by SMURF::LONGO (Mark Longo, USSG) Thu Jun 04 1992 17:33

Is there anyone out there besides myself that's heard Toy Matinee?
Their self-titled debut album came about a year or so ago and now seems
difficult to come by.

I'd describe them as similar to vintage Steely Dan in some ways
(a BIG compliment from a DIE HARD Dan fan like myself) but the songwriting
IS original and fresh. IMO the writing is lyrically witty, wry and interesting,
while vocals have character and the playing is superb.

I guess they remind me most of Steely Dan in the lyrics, but a few tunes
do bear more than casual similarity in structure and production. Also like SD,
the band is composed of 2 writers that play keys and guitar and are augmented
by a fairly consistent set of hired hands. I believe one of the writers, whose
name escapes me at the moment, is an established producer having produced at
least one (I don't know which one).

To my knowlege it was just a recorded effort with no supporting tour.

If anyone has more info or opinions on these guys, let's hear it!

OOOOPS, the previouys note should say that one of the writers in
Toy Matinee produced at least one *Madonna* record (I don't know
which one). When I come up with his name I'll post it if anyone
	cares.

There was a note in MUSIC_V3 about Toy Matinee. Patrick Leonard is the
keyboardist you're trying to think of - he's done production work with
Madonna and Roger Waters, among others.

I absolutely love this album, one of my favorites in the year it came out!
(Two years ago?) The Steely Dan remark is right on, especially on "The
Ballad Of Jenny Ledge". They also remind me a touch of The Fixx on "Last
Plane Out".

I know the band did some club dates in California, but I don't think they
did a real tour. And those dates were without Leonard, who was off producing
the latest Roger Waters LP. They are suppposedly going to do a second album,
but I haven't heard any details yet.

I also like the cd. I hear a little Dead in it at times.
Bob Weir-ish vocals. I like the stop and go rhythm technique.

There was an small bit on them in Musician magazine several months
back. As I recall, Patrick Leonard said that much of the project was done in
his basement studio (which is obviously not your avaerage basement studio
judging from the quality of the product!). I had the impression that he
thought of it as a spare time "for the fun of it" project, so I don't expect
he'll be grinding out new stuff on a regular basis.

"Jenny Ledge" and "Last Plane Out" got the most air play (what little
there was). Also my faves on the ablum. I was kind of surprised that these
guys didn't get noticed more. I hadn't heard that there was anything else
in the works from theme so it's great to hear that we'll be hearing more.

Add my name to the list of fans...I bought their CD in California, but
it is listed in the Noteworthy catalog for $10.71, #WB 26235.

I bought this cd when "Last Plane Out" was getting some air play. I
like the cd quite a bit! I think it sounds like David and David who
did "Welcome to the Boomtown" a few years back. I was surprised that
Toy Matinee didn't receive more recognition for this excellent effort.
I think this cd was a lot more solid than cd's I purchased from "major"
acts that had sold millions of copies. It all comes down to promotion.
If the record co. spends the bucks to promote it, it will get a hell of
a lot more recognition regardless of the quality of the product. Sad.

If you're into Toy Matinee, try out an L.A. band called The Men.
    	It's good music.

Last summer I found a tape by the group "Toy Matinee" in a bargain bin. I had
been looking for this album (which is also called Toy Matinee) ever since I
heard a song from the album on the radio five or six years ago. That song
is "The Ballad of Jenny Ledge".

This is one of the best rock albums I have bought in the last ten years! The
words are pretty good..the music is sensational. I hear influences from The
Beatles, Steely Dan, and others, but I think the band has its own distinct
style.

I know nothing about this band. Can anyone fill me in on Toy Matinee?

		Thanks,

I've got the album at home (someplace!) as they were recommended to me
as "Steely Dan-like". While "..Jenny" certainly has flavors of circa-
"Countdown..." B&F, I didn't find the album to stand up too well. At
best, it didn't meet my expectations, which may have been skewed...

Maybe I'll give it another listen or 3...

"The Ballad Of Jenny Ledge" sounds more like Steely Dan than some of that
band's own albums! 8^) Some of the other songs, like "Last Plane Out",
remind me more of The Fixx a bit. A nice record for sure, and definitely
a surprise from the $.99 bin where I got it!

BTW, half of Toy Matinee is keyboardist Patrick Leonard. Patrick is a
well-known producer (and songwriter), who has worked with everyone from
Madonna to Roger Waters.

Some more info and opinions in Note 242, also titled Toy Matinee.
(maybe the moderator should combine these notes?)

BTW, I agree that it was a first rate album, one of the best of
the year it came out IMO, which I *think* was 1990. I have always
considered this to be one of the most overlooked records of recent
	years.
