239.0. "Percussion Instruments" by RAVEN1::PINION (Hard Drinking Calypso Poet) Thu Jun 04 1992 08:59

Does anyone know anything about the Agotto Drum? I think it's all
wood and possibly sqaure shaped? Any idea on prices or sources would
nice too. BTW, this note is for the discussion of any and all
    percussion instruments.

I have something called a mombasa or tong drum. It's a wooden rectangular box
with seven "tongues" jig-sawed into the top. The individual tongues are tuned
and are hit with rubber-headed sticks. It's African and sounds great.

Got it from Elderly Instruments, mail order.

I have one of those. It was bought for me at an art show. Mine has
the 'tongues' carved in the shapes of animals. They do sound neat.

I don't have an Elderly catalog with me but I know the address and phone
number were posted within the past few days in COOKIE::FOLK_MUSIC. I'll
take a quick look.

Memory has been failing me lately, but I think the seven-tongue model was
about $140. There's a five-tonguer for less $.

Anybody got a recommendation for bongoes (or is it bongos?)? I want tunable
heads and a humane price.

Latin Percussion, or their import brand Cosmic Percussion are *the*
    brand for small percussion toys.
