       been in a couple of cheese bands in starving times, and they

       clubs when living in Ohio.  That was in the early 80's, and
       what's sad is you can probably find working wedding bands
       (yes, with just buckets of oozing cheese flowing from their
       amps, drums and P.A.'s) playing this and many of what they
       call "Standards" to suffering wedding parties, understanding
       now why this band only cost $200 for the night.
    
       Other songs for these Cheese Bucket Bands are: Misty, Never On
       Sunday, Johnny Be Good, Wipe Out, The Hokey Pokey (Stand up
       and make a fool of yourself), The Chicken Dance (Stand up again
       and make a fool of yourself), My Girl, Just My Imagination and 
       more.  
      
       I remember sitting behind my drums and with my heart down in
       my feet and pounding these songs out, weekend after weekend
       wondering when somebody would get wise and blow up our 
       equipment van.

     I once saw a record review book that spent some time defining shlock,
     and they decided that there was good shlock and bad shlock.

     For me, good shlock covers stuff like "Sweet City Woman," "96 Tears,"
     "Cherokee Reservation," "Little Willy" - I love those songs, but I 
     realize they're pretty hokey.  I think one of the things I hate most
     about today's Top 40/AOR is that it's rarely cool or acceptable to
     today's audiences to *get* that hokey or corny anymore.  The songs 
     run from serious to soulful to socially conscious to loud to being
     about love, but everybody seems too "mature" for the shlock.  I mean, 
     as funny and unimportant as things like "Afternoon Delight" were, I miss 
     the fact that bands were writing good shlock like that... you know, for
     variety.

    Funny; I have a few of the "Have a Nice Day; Super hits of the 70's"
    cassettes and I also find myself identifying "ggod schlock" and "bad
    schlock" when I listen to them.  For instance, "The Night Chicago
    Died" really ain't that bad, whereas "Sylvia's Mother" and "How do 
    You Do?" are worse than I ever imagined.  Eye of the beholder, I
    guess.

    hits (I think) was "Stoned Soul Picnic."  
    
    In any case, "Bill" was actually one of the other singers in the Fifth 
    Dimension and he *did* marry Marilyn McCoo.
    
    The two had another top 40 single in late 1976-early 1977 titled
    "You Don't Have to be a Star (To Be In My Show)."

    Back in college during the days of the so-called "sexual revolution" I
    had a next door neighbor in the dorm who was that guy who seems to exist
    on every college campus - the guy who slept with virtually every woman on
    the planet. He would sometimes have three or four "visitors" per evening.
    Some of his visitors tended to be, shall we say, sexually demonstrative.
    Thus, we usually had a pretty good idea when that "magic moment" had
    arrived.
    
    So, we'd sit there with my roommate's record collection, who was a part
    time DJ and had just about everything, and select *just the right
    moment* for a rousing, and very loud, spin of Paul Anka's "Having My
    Baby". Nothing like a little thought-provoking music to wile away the

    On the radio this morning, I heard a novelty version (yeah, I know) of
    "Mellow Yellow" as performed by "Senator McKinley" and "Senator Bobby"
    Kennedy, but I have no idea who Senator McKinley was, and Bobby Kennedy
    is dead, so some of the humor may have been lost.

    	Here are my entries in the "cheese" list. The first is "I Don't
    like spiders and snakes" by Jimmy something. The second causes me
    to contemplate "yellin' at the lawn", "It's raining men" by the

    Say what you want about Jim Stafford, but the man (it turns out) has
    phenomenal guitar chops.
    
    I once was flipping the channels and saw a guy playing "Flight of the
    Bumblebee" on a white acoustic guitar at the speed of light.
    
    I couldn't see who it was because he had his head down, pickin' like
    a madman.
    
    When the tune was over, he looked up, and it was Jim Stafford.

    I don't remember where I saw or heard him play (Smothers Bros maybe),
    but I do remember Jim Stafford being a pretty good picker. I was kinda
    bumbed out when he came out with that Spiders and Snakes novelty tune as
    a single.

    He actually had his own (summer replacement?) variety series a couple 
    of years after "Spiders and Snakes" was a hit.

I saw Jim Stafford in Vegas with the Smothers Brothers and Joan Rivers (on
DEC expense account).  He played and sang a bit, but he did not do "Spiders and
Snakes" despite repeated requests from the RSX section of the audience.
