What, no Matthew Sweet note ? His album "Girlfriend" is doing brisk business Down-under (Australia), with several tracks getting good airplay. I have been impressed with the raw, rock and roll feel (MS describes his guitar playing as "organic" - I like it !) of all the songs I've heard. Plus his voice has just the right note of urgency. I have read that this album was nearly not released due to contractual hassles, and MS nearly gave it away. Also, there is a song on the album called "Winona" about one guys obsession with Winona Ryder, and the impossible to fulfil love he had for her. If you're into fresh, raw rock and roll I suggest you check it out. Regards, Jeff.

Two of the songs from "Girlfriend" are getting airplay here in the Baltimore-Washington area, the title cut and one other whose name escapes me at the moment. I haven't heard the rest of the album, but the two songs I have heard seem very retro-sounding to me, especially the guitar work. Kind of makes you feel like you're back in the seventies.

Aside from his solo work, Matthew Sweet can be found on a couple of Golden Palominos records as guest, and was previously a member of a band called Oh-OK. (Or something like that. I think the band was from Athens GA. I'll check Trouser Press tonight.) - Dave

Love the intro to Girlfriend. Takes me totally by surprise. Sounds Hendrix-ie to me. -pat |
