Yea, even the name "Smells Like Nirvana" has been used before,
the DGC A&R person (I forget his name) who made up some sort of
jewelry with this inscription and I've seen one reference to a
bootleg with this name as a title. Other than that I haven't
heard it yet.
BTW, you might want to do a SET NOTE/TITLE="blah" before the
moderator "yells"!

| There is an accordion player of some renown, gettin' on in years,
hails from Cleveland Ohio, and still is considered America's "Polka
King" . . . name is Frank(ie) Yankovich or Yankovick . . . anyone
know (just out of curiosity) whether there's any relation? (Seems
I recall some music video of Weird Al's where the accordion was
very briefly "spoofed" which is why I ask.)

| Re some of the last few about grammar/spelling . . . the rule I learned
is "'i' before 'e' except after 'c', the exceptions being contained in
this sentence: Neither financier could accept either weird form of
leisure". Thus, the title 'Weird' stands vindicated. Just to set
the record straight. Now, I agree, let's get on with the doin's
of Weird Al hisself.

I finally heard it last night and at first I didn't care for it,
I had to force myself not to quickly change stations but then the
lines something like:
'they're from Seattle' (well not too far off)
'It's better than raising cattle'
'Mooohhh'
I did cause me to brake out in laughter which was even funnier
because I was on the Commuter Rail seated alone.
The gargling bit was pretty funny too.
Laughing out of context.

| Weird Al (his last name is spelled Yankovic, not Yankovick or
Yankovich) started out solo on the accordion, with a couple of early
singles "My Bologna" (I believe on Capitol) and "Another One Rides The
Bus" (on TK Records, home of KC and the Sunshine Band, the label folded
soon after this release), and lots of tapes sent to Dr. Demento.
I remember "Yoda" being in the top 5 for about 2 years.

I really don't know if a video I ran across was intended as the
Quaalude version, an obscure outake, an initial idea for Al's
"Smells Like..." video or what. It's sang with a slow arrangement
to a setting that makes it hilarious.
It also looks like it might be from one those shows where people
mimic performers. This wasn't though! The person looked a
bit like Al, well really Kurt Cobain but it was shot with the crowd
clapping along like a dance number, nearly Las Vegas circuit-like.
The opening lines were varied some what "Load up on drugs and kill
your Friends..." It was just as funny as Al's video. Getting to the
real Al video I get a kick out of the delayed basketball shot and
everything else.

And the new album is great ... I picked it up over the w'end.
[I know I'm missing a song, but I don't know which one it is.
Oh well, anyways, here's my song-by-song review of the CD. And
by the way ... if it matters, this list is not in any kind of
order.]
"Smells Like Nirvana" - parody of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen
Spirit". Mimics the original song as being incoherent, and also
pokes fun of Seattle dwellers.
"You Don't Love Me Anymore" - Weird Al original. The typical
Weird Al ballad ... not too serious.
"Can't Watch This" - parody of "Can't Touch This" by M.C. Hammer.
It's a song about all the garbage on TV. Good song.
"I Was Only Kidding" - Weird Al original. This song CRANKS!! He
tells the story about how his girlfriend took everything he told
her seriously [I really love you baby ... NOT!!]. Very "punkish"
song with subtle wailing guitar in the background.
"The Plumber" - parody of Milli Vanilli's "Don't Forget My Numb-
er". He also throws in the line "Blame it on the drain" at the
end.
"Taco Grand" - Weird Al original. Don't remember too much about
it, because I skipped past it on the second listen.
"When I Was Your Age" - Weird Al original. He goes through all
the exaggerations that the typical parent tells about his child-
hood [We didn't have dental floss, we had to use rusty nails].
This one cranks, too!!
"Airline Amy" - Weird Al original. He tells a story about an
airline stewardess named, you guessed it, Amy. Nothing to write
home about.
"The White Stuff" - parody of "The Right Stuff" by NKOTB. It's
about ... get this: the cream filling in Oreo cookies!! Funny
stuff.
"Trigger Happy" - Weird Al original. A "tribute" to gun nuts,
done in a "surfer" style [like The Beach Boys or Jan & Dean].
And for anyone that has the Nirvana CD and has FF'd past the
last song to about 22 minutes or so, try the same thing on this
one until you get to about 13 minutes. There's a "treat" for
you. 8^)

Taco Grande is not a Weird Al original. It is a parody of Gerardo's
"Rico Suave".

| Did anyone see Weird Al on the Arsenio Hall show
last night (Jul 13)? I caught him talking with
Arsenio and performing "You Don't Love Me Anymore"
(this was great - guyy next to him playng guitar;
Al had a guitar strapped around his shoulder himself,
which he occasionally looked at in between verses,
but never actually played it... after the song was
over he smashed the guitar on the floor)
I think he did another song before I switched it on,
though? Did he do "Smells Like Nirvana" also?
Just wondering....
