| Hey Tom,
I was listening to the same station at the same time and heard the song.
I thought of you right away! You always had a nice way with that tune.
Maybe we'll get to play it together again some day.

only time i saw him and his band, despite buying numerous disks of
his...anywy, what a show!!I had like 5th row seats, ans was taking my
girl on a date...i guess either I impressed her, or Gino did with his
skin-tight leather pants 'cause we ended up getting married a few years
later...i believe it was the "Brother to Brother" tour....anyone else

got outta jail. Right down the old tubes.
He's at the top of my "Great Loudmouths of Rock" list.
Others include Bono and David Lee Roth.

I picked up the new "Live in Montreal" CD last night.
Strawberries in Framingham had one, Sudbury and Acton
didn't have any yet.
As I hoped, it's a fabulous recording of the tour that I saw.
It was recorded at "Le Spectrum" in Montreal, Nov 18, 1990.
It's very powerful with agressive keys and drums ala the
"Brother to Brother" era. I've only listened thru once but
I must say that "In the Name of Money" is worth the price of
the CD - wow, what a groove!! That tune floored me in person
too!!

album to Gino Vanelli, or is there another album you would
recommend for that?

Well, I'm kinda biased. I feel that virtually every song on
every album is well worth hearing. If you like a more modern
sound, then anything after "Brother to Brother". If you like
aggressive, then "Brother to Brother" for sure.
He's a "broken hearted" ballad singer 1/4th of the time. 3/4ths
he's a kickin' groove songster.
This live album, to me, is fabulously recorded and is text book
on tastful keys, a lesson on how to sing, and (back to Brother
to Brother) unbelievable drumming. No question that someone
hearing this for the first time would say the drummer is the
standout.
Also, the chord progressions are great!
My top 3 (in no order) would be "Brother to Brother", "Big
Dreamers Never Sleep", and "Black Cars" for his studio albums.
So - buy those 3 and the new live one! ;^)

170.15 | Didn't he have some income tax problems in the US? | TARKIN::DEMARCO | Bluto | Wed Mar 18 1992 13:34 | 16 |
| Yes, the Vannelli Bros have been excellent and progressive composers
since the early 70's.
Joe really rips on the keys, and they always have an outstanding
drummer or percussionist playing with them.
I've loved them since the days of "Powerful People" when they used to
multi-track the synth parts one note at a time. They had a incredible
polyphonic sound at a time when all synths were monophonic!!
I've been impressed with them for almost 20 years now. I just could
never understand why they didn't got more airplay. It's sad, but most
people merely know Gino as a singer with a couple of sappy ballad hits.
What an understatement...

I hear that they finally made a settlement on this Gino Vanilli thing.
Arista will pay you $3.00 for every cd of "Blame it on the Rain" you
return to them you also get $2.50 back on tickets to concerts where they
lip-synched.
Oops!...never mind!

Based on Tom D.'s review of this album, I went out and bought the CD
since I know Tom has good taste in music. After the first listen, I
was going to sell it, didn't like it at all. However, I've been
listening to the CD a lot since then and it has slowly become one
of my favorites. The band is extremely _tight_, tasteful, and
they get into some excellent grooves. It took awhile, but this CD
has really grown on me.

Hi Larry - glad you gave it a few tries! For me, knowing the
tunes from the studio albums as well as seeing virtually the
same show in Boston, made it VERY easy to like right away.
He has a greatest hits CD that's good too. But I'd suggest his
four or five most recent CD's instead. Not a bad tune on any
of them (and I have good taste ;^) Brother to Brother is, by
far, the most guitar heavy.

There's a new Gino Vannelli CD out and, of course, I picked it
up over the weekend. It's called "Yonder Tree".
Tower Records has it in one of their listen-on-headphones stalls,
and it's on sale for $11.99.
It's a very different release for Gino. The Tower stall describes
at as "Gino doing 30's and 40's swing" and that description is
right on.
"The Portland Rhythm Section" is Randy Porter on acoustic piano,
Phil Baker on acoustic upright bass, and Graham Lear on
absolutely acoustic drums. Others include Chuck Findley on
trumpet, fluglehorn and trombone; Tom Scott on tenor and
soprano sax, Joe Vannelli on black and white delights, and
many others. Hmmmm... no electric guitar :-(
Gregory Hines does a tap dance intro and solo - pretty cool!
That tune is, by far, the most cookin' of the CD.
Anyway, this is NOT "Brother to Brother" or "Black Cars" by
any stretch. It's definitely big band swing influenced on
top of Gino tunes. Some fabulous vocals too - he's in great
vocal shape and thanks his teacher who "has broken my head
about my vibrato, vocal musculature, and Sinatra".
After just 2 listens, I'm wishing there were more uptempo
tunes - like very BIG band. But the arrangements are really
good. Adventurous progressions throughout.
I'll recommend it...
Gino Carlton
