136.1 | Hope Amy cheers up a bit | BAVIKI::good | Michael Good | Mon Feb 10 1992 12:56 | 13 |
| I hope Amy cheers up a bit in the songs for the new album,
or at least offers a greater range of musical style. Her
contributions to Nomads Indians Saints were getting quite
monothematic. Emily's songs on that album were wonderful;
some of my favorite of any of their material.
I heard them on the tour they did before Nomads Indians
Saints came out, and they were indeed great. It seems
they've been on the road an awful lot the past few years,
though. I hope they don't burn themselves (and their
audience) out.
Thanks for the news on the forthcoming album!

| One bit of news about the new IG album. I work in the periphery of a
studio that competes with the studio where the IGs tracked the new
album (Bearsville in NY). Their producer called the studio one day and
indicated that they were miserable at Bearsville and would be more than
willing to move the project to our studio of we could accomodate them
equipment wise. Unfortunately, it *had* to be a Neve VR console and
that's not what we got (at the moment anyway). They weren't interested
in us bringing in a mobile.
Apparently, Bearsville, which is a residential studio, was nickle and
diming them to death on amenities and in general treating them like
second class citizens.
Too bad, we'd have loved to get the job if we were equipped for it.

| By sound, do you mean the overall acoustic sound or their actual
guitar playing style? I think the girls have some great licks, but
then again that just my opinion.

| re .5, I guess I mean overall acoustic sound. I don't know much about
guitar playing, but I know what I like. :-) I think I would like
a more rock version of their music.

Rumor has it that The Indigo Girls will be at Great Woods sometime in
June. Does anyone out there have anymore information? Date(s), ticket
sales...
Thanks,

| Save your money. I saw the Indigo Girls last summer at Great Woods and
the acoustics were awful.

| Mark,
I take it you mean the acoustics of the venue?

| Yes Scott, I should have been more specific. I wasn't an Indigo Girls
fan until that concert. In fact, I went primarily to see the two
opening acts, Lucinda Williams and the Holmes Brothers.
However, these gals can entertain! The venue did the show injustice,
but I would go to see them elsewhere in a heartbeat. Perhaps it was
the seats, as we sat about 4 rows back from the stage and just to the
right of center stage.
I'd recommend seeing them elsewhere.

I have had both good and bad sound experiences at Great Woods. I sat
the 6th Row for Bonnie Raitt in '90 and found the sound to be as good as that
you'd expect to hear in a small club. The sound on the Lawn for James Taylor
was extraordinarily good. On the other hand, I have sat in the back half of
pavillion a couple of times and the sound sucked.
I think some parts of the venue probably have better intrinsic acoustic
properties than others, but of at least equal significance are the humans
responsible for the mixing. It takes a particular skill to mix a small room and
another to mix a venue like great woods. Some acts carry better sound people
than others, or people more experienced with one venue category than another.
Also, some bands can afford to substantially reinforce the house sound system
with more or better gear, or gear which they are more familiar with.(though I
know nothing about the Great Woods house system or if they even have one).
What drives me absolutly NUTS is sound people with high end hearing
loss who mix the highs excessively loud. It's like standing next to a taxiing
747:OUCH!!

| Hi Folks,
Just picked up the new Indigo Girls CD "Rites of Passage". I don't
have time to do a detailed review (did I hear a sigh of relief?) but
I do have a few comments. I was concerned with the Girls doing
something like this with a band on most of the songs. I was afraid it
would lose a lot of the acoustic appeal that really draws me to them.
No need for concern. This is a really good project and the band really
adds a lot to most of the songs. Especially the percussion, done by
three different people. Amy Ray is my fave of the duo, but her
rendition of the Dire Straits "Romeo & Juliet" will have to grow on me.
But she's still got that raw energy about her that I like so much!
If you're a fan, check it out. If you're new to the Indigo Girls,
you might want to start out their second release on Epic that's self
titled "Indigo Girls".
BTW, anyone gonna be in Atlanta to see them this weekend?
Capt. Scott
