135.1 | Eddie should tape the mike to his hand. | REFINE::BARKER | You talkin' ta me??? | Fri Feb 07 1992 08:29 | 10 |
| Funny you should mention Eddie Money, 'cause when I was at 'BCNs "The
Rock of Boston" concert a couple of years ago (good show too: Tribe,
The Call, Something Happens, Hot House Flowers, Masters of Reality),
Eddie Money did one of these 'celebrity guest appearences' and came out
to announce a band. Only, at this show, the had wireless mikes, so no
swinging, but he did toss it in the air, only it completely failed to
meet his hand on the way down and struck the stage with a boom that
sort of embarrassed him, I think.

thru a hole in the floor while he was singing and Trever Rabin sang
the rest of the song. He wasn't hurt.

135.3 | Watch Out For Flaming Speakers! | TYFYS::SLATER | As we see ourselves, so do we become. | Sat Feb 08 1992 13:41 | 8 |
| I was at a Mannheim Steamroller concert (Fresh Aire) in Chicago in 1987
or 1988. Half way through the show the stage-left speaker burst into
flames. Stage hands quickly put the fire out and replaced the speaker.
The leader/composer/drummer, Chip Davis, joked that he had wanted that
previous song to be a "hot number" but not to go THAT far...

135.4 | Monkees is ze craziest peoples! | CABOOS::NRAPAGLIA | TAKE THE LEAP | Mon Feb 10 1992 07:50 | 11 |
| When I saw The Monkees in Connecticutt, Micky Dolenz got so into
his twirling performance that he forgot the stage was a revolving stage
and fell right into a womans' lap in the front row. I never saw a guy move
away from a woman so fast in my life. He wasn't hurt, and I couldn't
stop laughing for a week.
What makes matters even worse, is that Davy Jones did the same thing
the next year. He wasn't hurt either and they even improvised the
whole thing, it was pretty funny once again.

I was there! In fact, I have a tape of it. This was the first 90125 tour
and, if I remember correctly, it happened at the end of "Owner of a Lonely
Heart." I read afterward that Anderson hurt himself quite badly but didn't
break anything.
They started the next song and marked time for a while waiting for him to
come back out. When he didn't, Rabin tried to sing the lead but gave up
very quickly. From his expression, I'm sure he could hear how bad he
sounded. Fortunately, a very sheepish looking Anderson came back out
to finish the concert.

| Was at a Billy Squier concert (hey, didn't have anything else to do and
we got in FREE). They had a pitiful, pubescent band screeching away
onstage opening for them. Well, Billy didn't show and didn't show.
God, the music was awful and the audience all but booed these guys off
the stage. Finally, two hours later (remember, didn't have anything
else to do), some guy comes out and said Billy was on his way. He had
to bail his bass player out of jail in L.A.! Guess times were tough
for ole' Billy...

135.7 | AHA in a partron's lap | EPS::BAUER | BOGEY AND STAR TREK LOVER | Fri Feb 14 1992 14:40 | 18 |
| remember the group AHA...saw them in Boston at
Orpheum....the keyboardist got carried away and stepped
up onto a speaker he thought was solid, but it had
a sloped back and he landed on two guys in the front
row of the audience (right next to me).
A bodyguard came right out on stage, and looked as
though he was going to pummel the two guys - thinking
they had dragged him into the audience.
The player got up, laughed and kept right on playing.
The Lead Singer (wearing tight strategically ripped
leather pants) never missed a beat....
and for that matter neither did the keyboardist.

135.8 | | CHEFS::IMMSA | adrift on the sea of heartbreak | Thu Feb 20 1992 07:50 | 13 |
| Saw Ry Cooder in London a few years back.
He changed guitars between songs but the one he was putting on did not
have its strap attached properly and it fell to the stage, perfectly
horizontal, and hit the deck on its edge.
He picked it up, put it on and said "Did anyone get a picture of that?"
Have I ever wished I had smiggl;ed a camera into a gig :-(
He didn't even have to tune it up afterwards.

135.10 | I guess this qualifies as a concert mishap | NEMAIL::CARROLLJ | Immanuel Kant was a real . . . | Sun Aug 09 1992 10:03 | 47 |

Saw Lollapalooza '92 last night - I suppose this is as good a place as
any for this . . .
The concert was at Great Woods, and featured Lush, Pearl Jam, Jesus &
Mary Chain, Soundgarden, Ice Cube, Ministry & the Red Hot Chili
Peppers, in that order. All was going smoothly until Ministry came on
around sunset. My friend and I weren't big fans, so we went out to
poke around all the booths set up ( jewelry, piercing displays,
legalize marijuana, etc ).
Coming back in we were greeted with the interesting spectacle of
sod from the lawn ( LOTS of sod ) flying through the air. Looking up
at the figures on the lawn shilouetted against the setting sun, we
could seen literally hundreds of pieces of land being lobbed back and
forth. Also a few towels and blankets, and even a person or two.
Deciding to see what started it, we walked up into the thick of it.
Bad idea. I had my jacket to shield me from the worst of it, but my
friend got draped by a flying carpet of grass and dirt almost 3 feet in
diameter. He had fun shaking crap out of his hair for the rest of the
night.
We made it out just as the worst of it died down, only to see that
people had started bonfires on the lawn. We saw them springing up here
and there, just small ones at first. One in paticular seemed to be
growing at an alarming rate, and I wondered what they were buring until
I noticed largish gaps in the wooden fence behing the lawn.
My friend went back to our seats, but I, being somewhat adventurous
( and not too bright ), wanted a closer look. I made my way up
through the throngs of people ( show was sold-out - LOTS of people ) to
the highest point. There were not fewer than 6 smaller fires and one
huge one, with 30 or 40 people running madly around it. People were
leaping over and through the smaller ones. As I was watching, two guys
came up and calmly ripped another 8 foot plank from the wall, then
carried it off between them towards the big blaze.
Having seen enough, I walked back down to our seats over the
cratered, pitted, scarred landscape the was a nicely manicured lawn
earlier that day. After Ministry's set was done, one of the concert
organizers came out and ( justifiably ) screamed at the A__holes on the
lawn to let Security and the Fire Dept. through to put out the fires.
It took a while, but eventually they were put out.
I was amused to see workers sweeping sod off the stage while they
set up for the Red Hots. For their encore, the Red Hots came out
wearing helmets with fire coming out of the top - sort of a human
candle effect. Anthony K. said "Gee, why do I feel like Great Woods".
All in all it was a great show, especially Pearl Jam and RHCP.

| Jimbo, thanks for the write up. I'm amazed, your write up and what I
read in the paper appear similiar. I didn't believe that this could
actually happen. ;-)
Too bad a bunch of morons screw things up for everyone else. This
event will not be back to Great Woods next year.

| Why not, the sod was torn up and there were fires (though not as big)
last year? Of course, if there are two many complaints from venue
owners across the country, and Lollapalooza gets cancelled
alltogether...

first started tearing up the lawn, etc.?
Amazing, considering at other shows there you can get chewed out for dancing
in the wrong place.

135.14 | I thought music TAMED the savage beast | SLUGER::CHAMP | you take reality SO seriously! | Mon Aug 10 1992 13:37 | 15 |
| Re -.1
I was wondering about that too - but the show was sold out,
which means there was upwards of 15,000 people there, probably a
3rd or so of that on the lawn . . . . would YOU go up there if you
were an unarmed security guy?
Actually I was surprised that there weren't more blueshirts
around - they only had seven or eight in front of the stage - a
few people managed stage dives . . .
Does anyone have a write up from a paper handy - I haven't seen
any - was it in the Herald or Globe?

135.15 | | DABEAN::MERCIER | | Mon Aug 10 1992 13:46 | 11 |
| I was at Lollopalooza on Friday nite and the same stuff was happening;
fires, tearing down the fence, etc. I actually saw several people swinging
burning clothing above their heads with lit ashes going everywhere. No
announcement were made....Security was just watching....I think they
knew that the type of crowd that was there would be very easy to get
rioting....I thought it was a very volatile and potentially explosive
situation.
The Bands were great!!!

135.17 | Boston newspapers | RANGER::CERQUA | | Mon Aug 10 1992 13:55 | 11 |
| The Globe had a short blurb buried in the middle of the paper. They
asked a policeman (I'm not sure of his title) about it and he said that
the damage was less than expected and that it was basically a good
crowd.
The Herald put it on the front page and has many brief interviews with
concert attendees, Great Woods management, etc. Noone seemed
particularly alarmed or surprised, although Great Woods will be
considering what to do about the show next year (i.e., will they have
it or not).

| Lollapalooza will not be invited back to Great Woods next year.
I heard a spokesperson from the Woods say that although the
incident was a little overblown they don't need the hassle.
His words were basically that it was too bad a small group
of jerks spoiled this for others.

| About Lollapalooza, my daughter was there both nights...and on the
lawn. She told me about what had happened and we discussed the fact
that it's too bad a small group will ruin it for everyone (i.e., no
Lollapalooza next year - this is her second year in a row going). In
the meanwhile, there was a lot of slam dancing on the lawn as well. Her
boyfriend said he was sore from all the slamming... On
Saturday she stepped on a nail in a board left from the fence being
torn down (never could get that kid to keep her
shoes on) but she said that one kid was hit in the eye with a board
with a nail in it... that's tragic. And yes, she did go for a tetanus
shot on Sunday.
In the meantime they enjoyed the music both days and said it was a
great concert.
