I've heard that there will be two albums of new Springsteen material
released in March/April. This will not be a double album, but two
separate single albums.
The albums are HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN. Lucky Town was recorded at
Bruce's studio at his house. Neither have the E-Street band, though his
wife Patti sings on both of them.
Human Touch has David Sancious, Jeff Procaro, Bobby King and Sam Moore
(of Sam & Dave) - songs are:
Soul Driver
57 channels
Cross My Heart
Gloria's Eyes
With Every Wish
Roll of the Dice
Real World
All or Nothing at all
Man's Job
I Wish I Were Blind
Long Goodbye
Real Man
Pony Boy.
Luck Town songs are:
Lucky Town
Better Days
Local Hero
If I should Fall Behind
Leap of Faith
Big Muddy
Living Proof
Book of Dreams
Souls of the Departed
My Beautiful Reward.
No tour was announced, but it is expected. Albums due out in March/April.

The Etta James recording of "I'd Rather Go Blind" ("...than to see you
walk away from me, child. You see I love you so much I don't want to
watch you leave me, baby. Most of all I just don't want, just don't
want to be free, no.") is my all-time favorite cry-in-my-bourbon song.

| Are Tony Danza and Bruce Springsteen the same person?
Before you dismiss this out of hand consider:
o Have you ever seen Tony Danza and Bruce together?
Not conclusive in and of itself, but a piece of the puzzle.
o Tony Danza's current hit TV show is called _Who's the Boss?_
Begs the question, doesn't it?
o Bruce's 'disappearance' coincides with the rising popularity
of Tony's sitcom (see above).
o If you look at the cover of Bruce's _Nebraska_ album, you'll
see a reflection of a *taxi*. (Tony's breakthrough show was
_Taxi_, in case you didn't know.)
I recommend watching the E channel, Entertainment Tonight, and Geraldo
as much as possible in the next few weeks.
This could very well be a blockbuster story!

Backstreets Hotline January 10, 1992
Bruce made a guest appearance on Sunday, Feb 2 in New Orleans with a band
called the Iguanas. He played Ain't that A Shame and Save the Last dance for
me.
There was a listening party in London recently for the new albums. According
to a source who attended the party a tour is planned to start in CANADA for
a few dates, move to Europe for 7 - 8 dates in small venues, to the US for
the summer and back to Europe for stadiums.
A video was shot in New Orleans last week. Several scenes were used
including one in a used trolley cart, one in a Woolworth's cafe, a
school auditorium.
The single Human Touch is scheduled to be released in the UK on Mar 9 and
the album on the 27th. Probably the 31st in the US.
The hotline also had an update Friday saying that the Canada tour would
be in May, with the European dates in June/July. They also described the cover
art for the albums (Human Touch has a closeup of Springsteen's hand gripping
a guitar neck, the other had a picture of Springtseen in sunglasses).
I have yet to hear anything about a band for the tour. The Chicago Bruce line
said that the people running an arena in Hartford Connecticut reported that
the tour would be acoustic. If so, I would bet that the tour would stick to
strictly arenas, no stadiums.

RE: .13
I think that a list of all the CD stuff (official and unofficial) doesn't exist.
I know that has been released some days ago a very good book for unofficial stuff
it's called "BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN YOU BETTER NOT TOUCH The complete Bootleg CD Guide"
written by Lynn Elder.
Castaways if I'm not wrong is a bootleg of outtakes that you can find on other
CD or records cheaper than this.
Tunnel of Lust is considered one of the best CD bootleg ever made ,but I think that
it's also one of the most expensive !!(about 130-150 $)
It's a double CD that contains most of the concert in Worchester on February 28th
1988.
Hope it can help .....

| Having spent the weekend listening to the new albums, my first comment is why
weren't they released as a double album, particularly since they are packaged
almost identically. My initial response is that I prefer Lucky Town, which is
really like saying I prefer sides 1 & 2 of The River, since it seems to contain
some of the stronger tracks. Better Days and Lucy Town are certainly raunchier
than anything that appeared on Tunnel of Love, and it also contains some some
smart ballads in If I Should Fall Behind (Bruce plays Dylan) and My Beautiful
Reward. Human Touch contains the very River-ish Roll of the Dice, and the
brilliant I Wish I Were Blind which is surely destined to become a classic,
having a similar feel to Little Girl I Want To Marry You. Broadly, Human Touch
is the more upbeat of the two, but contains a couple of good ballads including
Book of Dreams. However, disappointingly the absence of the E-Street Band means
no saxaphone, though David Sanctious makes an impressive return on keyboards.
There you go, almost objective. Needless to say, the reality is that both
albums are superb - looking forward to the tour.

| Re .43:
More money? At current CD prices, you don't pay any more for
2 separate CD's than for a full-length double-CD set. In fact
you can often pay less because many stores will discuss new
single CD's more than new double CD's. I paid less for the
two new Bruce albums than for the new Van Morrison double album,
for instance.
The story goes that Bruce wanted to write just "one more song"
for Human Touch, but wound up with a whole new album instead.
So I guess in his mind, Human Touch wasn't complete until the
new album was complete too, hence the delay in releasing the
Human Touch material.
Now for the music. It's top-notch Bruce. If you love his stuff,
you'll love these albums; if you hate him, these won't change your
mind. People have mentioned that these albums remind them of
the Darkness and especially the River albums, and I'll go along
with that - though thankfully it doesn't have some of the throwaway
tunes which marred The River for me. After a year in which other
mainstream rockers like Bob Seger and John Mellencamp released
new albums which are several notches below their best music, it
is especially delightful to have almost 100 minutes of new,
first-rate Bruce!
These are impressions based on first listening, but Bruce is one
rocker where my first impressions usually stay with me. I can
tell these albums will be dominating my commutes for a while!
Highlights are hard to pick out with so much music, but it's
certainly great to hear Bruce playing lots of guitar again.
And Mark Isham's trumpet work on With Every Wish is really nice;
there hasn't been anything quite like that on a Bruce album since
Meeting Across the River.

I agree but would add (digress) that it's not always the case as
I believe in the case of the Guns n' Roses camp although they
suggested the reasoning behind the separate release of albums was
to make it a less costly package some critics claim this had
the reverse affect.

| From what I've read, the real reason is to get a couple of releases off
of his total release commitment to Columbia, so it will be new contract
time a little sooner. Also, the two releases are _very_ different
musically and really should be different releases. It would be like
releasing "Nebraska" and "Tunnel of Love" as a double set.

| Re .50:
I can buy the part about reducing his release commitment to
Columbia. I had anticipated that the albums were indeed in
different musical styles, but that's not the case. One of
the raps on Bruce of course is that he doesn't have a variety
of musical styles, but such variety as he does have, from
quiet acoustic songs to full-out rockers, are covered on both
albums.
That pinnacle of unimpeachable information, Rolling Stone :-),
mentioned someone who said that on Human Touch, Bruce is still
searching for happiness, while on Lucky Town he's discovered
he's happy and is figuring out what that means. That sort of
fits too. But that's a subtle lyrical difference rather than
a drastic musical difference between the albums.

Maybe my favorite song so far is Toss of the Dice.
I agree that, at least, Human Touch is top notch Bruce material, and

Mellencamp and Seger's last albums were way below their best work, and
both dissapointments.)

I think this song is probably the best of the bunch from either
record. It's pretty vintage Springsteen.
What I don't get is why Springsteen cut loose the E Street band. I hear
very little on either release that the couldn't have been made with
the E Street band. I could understand of he was going in some sort of
new direction (like Bruce does a "jazz odyssey" ;^) ), but for yer
basic Springsteen record....

Clarence is 3 month in Germany with Peter Maffay on Tour. (April,

Also in the Band from Peter Maffay is Alvin Lee. (Ten Years

Have to agree with you about Mellancamp's last CD not being up to
"standard" ( although after 4 excellent albums in the trot one had
to be below par ).
I havent bought any of the new Springsteen's CD yet but according to

Probably buy them at the weekend !!!!!

two CD singles, each containing 3 songs.
Unfortunately, there is no new song (or live recording of an existing

What about the CD singles in the US, or UK, and Japan too ?
Is there something new ?

Bruce on Saturday Night Live! ([email protected])
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backstreets Magazine Phone Hotline update, 4/24/92:
FLASH! Bruce Springsteen will appear on television on Saturday Night Live
on May 9th, performing three songs. It's unknown whether we'll get a glimpse
of the tour band or if he'll use the SNL band. The guest host is Joe Pesci.
Friday's Detroit Free Press was theorizing a Springsteen show at the Palace
in August, while the Boston Globe had him playing Great Woods in the summer.
[ Will Europe follow Canada in being pushed back in the tour? Stay tuned. ]
Have fun.

Tom G - he's been with different iterations of the E Street
Band since he was a teen. How many different folks have
you played with? He said he needed some new blood, some
new "spirit", to get him going.
This new drummer is kickin' besides. Plus, I always much
prefered Vinnie "Mad Dog" Lopez over Max Weinberg. Really
loved that double bass drum in the first two albums.
But I'll miss Nils for sure. I'm guessing Clarence will be
with Ringo's All Stars.
Anyway, moving on makes sense to me. An E Street reunion
would be great in a few years...

Re: "E St. Band"
The core of the band has been the same since " Born to Run", with the
exception of Steve Van Zant. In my opinion, "the" E St. Band is:
o Max Weinberg
o Gary Tallent
o Danny Federici
o Roy Bittan
o Clarence Clemons
Of course, Steve and Nils have made significant contributions to the
sound of the band, but they didn't define the sound.
In my opinion, Bruce is only half the attraction.

125.79 | Saturday Night Live appearance | BAVIKI::good | Michael Good | Mon May 18 1992 14:31 | 19 |
| So did anybody else see Bruce on Saturday Night Live a couple
weeks ago? The new band sounded awfully good to me, and if
that's who he's touring with I'll be delighted.
As usual for Bruce's performances, he opened up the songs a
bit. Most surprising was the rendition of "57 Channels" -
Bruce does noise! I couldn't believe it, but it was great!
The E Street Band was good, but I don't mind at all to
see Bruce working with new musicians. Heck, the only time
the E Street Band has played any significant role in his
studio albums in the past 10 years was on Born in the USA,
so this really isn't anything new. And while the Big Man
has great stage presence, musically he isn't much of a
sax player even by rock standards.
So if SNL is any indication, the tour might find Bruce doing
some very different things that I couldn't imagine the
E Street Band ever doing. Sure hope I can get tickets!

125.80 | Time Will Tell | RICKS::ROST | Electric music for mind and body | Mon May 18 1992 14:55 | 18 |
| I'd be worried by E-Street-less Bruce after watching all the other
greats who faltered after leaving their old bands behind: solo Beatles,
John Fogerty, Alice Cooper, David Lee Roth, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger,
John McLaughlin, etc. Of course it's always personal opinion whether
it's "faltering" or going on to new heights.
I wouldn't go so far as to say the presence of the E-Streeters was only
significant on "Born in the USA". What about the second album which
had a heavy debt to David Sancious' arranging skills? Like some other
relatively non-descript bands (Crazy Horse comes to mind) it's tempting
top think that "better" players will improve the music, usually it's
the opposite (played "She's the Boss" lately?)!
I'll defend Bruce's decision as it's his music, etc. but only time will
tell if it was the right move. In the meantime he's probably burned
some major bridges with his old band.

I read .-2 the same way you did, but I think what he really
meant was the only album in the *last* 10 years that the E

I guess it depends on whether you consider "Tunnel of Love" a good
record or not. I don't like it much, except for a few cuts.
Other than that I have to agree with Brian that you have to
respect Springteen's choices, but I don't have to like it.. ;^)

| Re .81:
Right, I meant that since 1981, Born in the USA is the
only studio album that really uses the E Street Band
(the other albums being Nebraska, Tunnel of Love, and
the new albums). Obviously the band played a big role
in the earlier albums. And since "Born in the USA",
the only E Street album in the last 10 years, is also
my least favorite Springsteen album of all time, I for
one am happy to hear him play with other folks for
a change.
Don't get me wrong - I love the old albums with the
E Street Band, and I've never seen a concert like the
'78 Springsteen/E Street show I was lucky enough to
attend. But I really like the newer albums too.

not that I every expected to get them. Where did they go ? they went to
out-of-state ticket warehouse legal scaping agencies (OOSTWLSA)! thats
where ! These places get tickets from the Centrum or Ticketmaster (not
sure who controls the ticket sales). They sell tickets that people in
line with wristbands should have got ! but not for there face value, no
for a lot more with no justification for the price increase except of
course we got them and you don't ! They (OOSTWLSA) had ads on the radio
boasting that they had tickets already (before the tickets went on sale)
I don't care if it Bruce Springsteen or MegaDeath or Slim Whitman ! if
the Centrum is going to give out Wristbands then they should at least
make plans to assure most (@75%) ,if not all, of the people wearing the
damn thing for the past few days the chance to get get tickets, I know
they state that a wristband does not mean you'll get tickets. Maybe
that should change (put a limit on the amount of wristbands given out
so not to waste peoples time) because the people in line and the people
tring to do they job selling the tickets and getting the line formed
do not deserve the BS that is created by the greed of a small group of
people.

125.103 | How it worked at my Ticketmaster outlet | BAVIKI::good | Michael Good | Mon Jun 08 1992 13:55 | 34 |
| The Centrum gave out 700 wristbands?? That is outrageous.
They should have known there was no way most of those people
would get tickets.
I had heard that only 50 wristbands were being distributed
per Ticketmaster outlet - that's how many had been distributed
at my local place, anyway. I showed up at about 9:15 without
a wristband. The 50 wristband folks got their seats, the 20 or
so non-wristband folks in front of me got seats (though Friday
sold out about 5 people in front of me), and I got seats at about
10:23. I'm very lucky to live close to a very small Ticketmaster
outlet that basically is just known to people in the local area,
and thus had a small line. This is the first time I've ever been
able to get Bruce tickets to a Boston-area show, and the first
time I'll have seen Bruce in concert since '78.
Ticket sales are a whole different ballgame now with Ticketmaster.
It's like the distributed, parallel computer systems that our own
company makes. You have lots and lots of people selling tickets
in parallel, and they all have roughly an equal shot at the
tickets. The local box office has no advantage - and that
ridiculous wristband overallocation wound up putting you at
a terrible disadvantage. Sure, there are still problems with
the radio stations and scalpers (there were scalpers at the end
of the line where I was), but I suspect most of the tickets
wound up with fans at Ticketmaster outlets all over the area.
Say there were 100 Ticketmaster outlets. Each 4-ticket transaction
seemed to take about 20 seconds, so that's 1200 tickets per minute.
The Centrum holds about 15,000 people, so there are 30,000 tickets
for both shows. 30,000 / 1200 = 25 minutes, which is about how
long it took to sell out (allow some extra time for 2-ticket sales).
The key unknown here is the number of Ticketmaster outlets - anyone
know?

| FWIW, I arrived at the Acton ticketmaster around 9:50 with my #35 wristband.
The 50-person wristband line was full, and there were about 30 non-wristband
people. The number they picked to start was 42, so I was about 44th in line.
:-( They did get through the whole line by about 10:15, and I got section 201
- straight back, opposite side of the arena from the stage. Most of the people
towards the back of the line got behind-the-stage or upper level seats. I
think the Friday show sold out in about 20 minutes. The non-wristband line
also got fully serviced, then both shows were sold out around 10:25.

Does anybody know what the scalpers are charging for the Centrum?
Of the 4 times I've seen Bruce, twice at the Centrum for Tunnel of
Love, and once at the Centrum and once in Providence for Born in the
USA, twice I had to buy from a scalper. The first two times, '84 and
'85, were before they gave out armbands, and I think it worked better
before armbands.
Now, you have to know both when the arm bands will be given out and
when tix will go on sale. Before you just had to know when the tix
went on sale, and if you wanted to stand in line all night for tix, it
was up to you. It was better then. I've had a harder time getting tix
since the armbands have been given out because I never know when
they're being given out, and, even if I do, can't get there in time!!

HT and LT. He also played "Darkness", "Born in the USA", "Glory Days", "My
Hometown" and an acapella version of "Hungry Heart".
I was impressed with the version of "57 Channels"(similar to SNL but more) and
with "Roll of the Dice".
He brought Little Steven on stage for "57 Channels" and Patti for "Glory Days".
It sounds like it will be a very different sound then anything in the past.

that it's the first night, and then Thursday on the basis that they should have
fixed the sound system by then! Having gone to all the Tunnel of Love gigs, the
sound system on the opening night in Birmingham left a bit to be desired. From
the set lists noted so far, it looks like we're in for a treat - how do people
record the set lists, does it involve standing at the gig with a pencil and
paper ? Were there any 'guests' at any of the European gigs, apart from the
obvious, ie '.. oh, what a surprise, here's Little Steven..' and what's the
band like compared to the E-Street Band ? Will post a report on Tuesday.

125.136 | WEMBLEY. 6th July | YUPPY::TONEYD | | Thu Jul 09 1992 09:15 | 22 |
| Re .133 . Yes, I went to Wembley on Monday night. Despite the new band being
rubbished in the European press, the gig was equal to any I've seen on the
previous four tours. Bruce was a lot more laid back and not so introspective
as he has been previously and the whole set was great fun from start to finish.
A lot of the new stuff comes over really well live, except perhaps 57 Channels
which is hardly a masterpiece anyway. The gig started at 7.45 ish and he finally
went off at 11.45 ish with a short break in between. The set was largely a mix
of those already outlined by Sue with some noteable highlights - Hungry Heart,
which the audience sang from start to finish, an acoustic Thunder road, which
brought a few tears, and a barnstorming Born To Run with one of the women in
the band doing an adequate sax solo. There was a good deal of larking about,
with Bruce jumping down into the audience on several occasions and causing a
nightmare for the security guys by leading a procession around the front of
the arena during Glory Days. Patti was notable for only appearing briefly and
unannounced on two occasions, once for Human Touch and once for Brilliant
Disguise.
Thats it. Back off to Wembley again tonight.
Dave.

Ignorance is bliss. 8^)
Often times people will have two doors, a solid door (wood, metal, whatever)
and a screen door outside of the solid door which is made of a wire mesh.
Purpose is so that you can leave the solid door open to let in a breeze.

played until 9:15.....mainly new songs, except for a brilliant accoustic
'dancing in the dark' and also 'Darkness of the edge..' and 'My
Hometown'
He then went off and came back on at 9:40 ands played until 11:15.
The second set included some older material, although most of the songs
were off 'Born in the USA'....
'Born in the USA', 'Glory Days'(He lead a conga around the stage),
Bobby Jean, Cover Me
Only one song from 'Tunnel Of Love'...'Brilliant disguise.
He did 'Thunder Road', and 'Born to Run' and the crowd sang 'Hungry
Heart'.
He also receited a little poetry......'Humpty Dumpty' and 'Jack and
Jill' :)
At one point in the first set on one of his walkabouts...he was
pulled into the crowd, all you could see were an expensive pair of cowboy
boots. :)
The band were rather good aswell, there is a complete poseur on
the Lead Guitar.....but the Drummer and the Female guitarist/sax
player are very good.
This must rank along with the best concerts I have ever been to....only
equalled by Clapton at the R.A.H. and Metallica at Wembley....but this
concert was *very* close to stealing the crown for its very own.
SUPERB!

125.149 | Review of June 30 Paris show | GRANPA::DFAUST | Networkin' the USA '92 Tour | Thu Jul 16 1992 18:03 | 99 |
| Reprinted from the Philadelphia Dailey News, July 1, 1992
`ZE BOSS' DELIVERS ROCK'S HEALING POWER
Parisians gaga over his redemption theme
by Jonathon Takiff
Paris - What does an American rock n' roll fanatic do on his first day
in Paris?
If he's lucky, he gets rockin' with Ze Boss - Bruce Springsteen- midst
the company of sixteen thousand frothing, first-wave French fans, at an
intime (as in intimate) grass covered rock salle called Bercy on the
south side of town.
Last night's Paris show was the second of two Springsteen sellouts he
(though it took a month to move all the seats at $40 a pop), and the
sixth date in his '92-'93 world tour. It brings him home to New Jersey
July 23 and to Philadelphia on Aug. 28-29 at the Spectrum. (I have
tickets for the 28th. dlf)
Judging from the growth already evident in the new band, after their
shaky debut on Saturday Night Live two months ago, and from his
rethinking of set lists from his opening Stockholm show two weeks ago
(dropping all the dreariest ballads), Springsteen should have no
trouble convincing even the oldest fogey fans that he's still The Boss,
even without the E Street Band by his side.
Last night, Springsteen proved the healing power of rock in a three
hour, 25 song marathon featuring a seriously integrated new crew of
five musicians (holding over only keyboardist Roy Bittan) and six
backup singers (all females of color, save for the wonderous Bobby
King).
Kicking off with "Better Days" and bringing it home with "Born To Run,"
the theme of the night was redemption, with music evoking the fiery
fever of a flap rattlin' tent revival meeting.
Working mostly material from his newest pair of albums ("Human Touch"
and "Lucky Town", both gold here is France with sales of 150,000 and
130,000, respectively), Springsteen and his gospelly choir preached the
parable of the "Local Hero" and the prayer of forgivness in "If I
Should Fall Behind", praised the marvel of new life in "Living Proof"
and endorsed self-reliance in "Man's Job." But Nuttin' in this
spiritual real topped his "Leap Of Faith", with Bruce tottering on a
tower of speakers and the crowd gowing absolutely bananas (yeah, show
biz schtick is an international language).
For a bit of contrast, Springsteen also hauled out a few country
orientd tunes, one featuring special guest Elliot Murphy, introduced as
one of Bruce's old playpals from the 1970s era Greenwich Village.
Generally, though, he seemed to be downplaying the wordier ballads,
perhaps because of the language barrier. (Truth is, that dark, pensive
stuff doesn't work so great in home court areas, either.)
"I don't understand what he's saying, but he gives me the impression of
a good man," observed one cheerful row mate.
"Tougher Than The Rest" and "Brilliant Disguise" featured strong cameo
appearances from his wife, Patti Scialfa, the latter number seeming
especially ironic since it chronicles the breakup of Bruce's marriage
to the former Mrs. Boss (Julianne Phillips).
Bruce's new group still looks a bit stilted, like your generic band for
hire - especially in the grimacing, cornball guitar heroics of Shane
Fontanya. But the dude does play hot licks, and swing singer/player
Crystal Matthews is winning - sealing the deal for me with he sax
wailing on "Born To Run". And the crew all kicked tussy in the
especially strong second set, through the likes of "Bobby Jean", "Light
Of Day", and "Glory Days", with its old fashioned Springsteen conga
line across the stage apron.
"Right here in Paris, and I ain't goin' home until I've got the job
done," proclaimed the star. "I've got a crisis in confidence, and I'm
not sure, I'm not sure...".
Generally, the audience made up in enthusiasum for what they lacked in
knowledge. The thousands packed on the floor swayed en mass to the
music, their arms thrown into the air. (You may have seen a similar
scene in Madonna's "Truth or Dare" film, shot here at Bercy.)
They flicked their Bics for "The River" and cheered whenever Bruce
pulled out his harmonica. But even stranger was the habit of some
French fans to sing along at the top of their lungs, even if they
didn't know the words. They'd just throw in some "angleesh" that
sounded right.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry it took so long to enter the review. I was on vacation and have
just gotten around to some of the newspapers that I missed when I was
gone. Hope this adds to the memory of someone that attended the June 30
show in Paris or whets the appetite of someone with tickets for a US
show.

| Having attended two nights at Wembley where My Beautiful Reward was played as
the last song, its placement puzzled me. Having whipped the audience up into a
frenzy with a blistering version of Born to Run, it felt like an anti-climax to
finish off with this - perhaps it has some special personal significance to
Bruce and Patti. In terms of how it is staged; with the band, acoustic guitars,
lots of harmonica, drifting out at the end.

| I was going to wait until after I saw all the Bruce shows that I have
tickets for, but last night's show was just so extraordinary that I must
put my 2 cents in.
While the basic show outline remains the same from show to show, he
pulled out a number of very different tunes then what we've seen listed
so far. Including:
SANDY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 (with only Roy backing him up)
TRAPPED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (as hot as any tune I've ever seen)
DARLINGTON COUNTY (during the encores)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FOLLOW THAT DREAM (as the last encore)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He also did a song that he wrote for Southside Johnny's last album,
unfortunately, the name escapes me at this moment!
He jumped into the audience about 4 times and pulled women and men up
to dance during Man's Job!!!
The energy given off from this man just defies description. He is so
pumped up to be there, constantly thanking the audience, wishing people
Happy Birthday, Hello's to old friends, etc, etc.
The show highlights are many, but Light of Day takes off into the
stratosphere!!! The band keeps getting better and better. Main
differences are on a few songs you hear the sax in your head and
wonder why it isn't on stage and this band is totally guitar oriented.
They jam out all the songs and he is slightly changing arrangements to
accomodate the 5 backup singers.
Patti appears out of nowhere for only two songs and the crowds just
cheer and cheer! Then, she disappears at the end of the song as if she
was never there!
I've been to two shows so far and I'm also going next Tuesday and I
can't wait!

| There are 5 different styles of t-shirts. One is black with the cover
of Human Touch on the front and the cities in the back. A grey one
also has the Human Touch cover and dice on the back with the cities. A
white one is the cover of Lucky Town with the East Rutherford dates on
the back with a large Sold Out stamped over it. Another white one has
a smaller picture of Bruce's hand strumming a guitar and the cities on
the back. All of the above are $23. The last t-shirt has the the
picture of the guitar without any writing on the back (in small &
medium only) and this shirt was $12. Baseball caps are $15, a package
of 3 pins are $5 and the program is $13 (don't bother I bought it and
while it has some nice picture it's not worth the $$$). People were
snapping up the shirts at an unbelievable rate! If 220,000 tickets
were sold we figured that at least 70,000 people bought shirts -
Rolling Stone had an article a while back about who gets how much off
of each shirt - the artist gets about $4 per shirt - figure it out
yourself - not a bad way to make a few bucks!!!

Unreal, as usual. 7:50 to ? - I left at 11:50 and he was still
on. Highlights for me...
Cover Me cranked!!
Singalong of Hungry Heart
Born in the USA and Born to Run
All the new tunes were far more aggressive live
A dual duel with Bruce and the other guitarist - the band
just stopped and they riffed at each other for about
30 seconds - pure Hendrix !!!
Lowest - an acoustic Spirit in the Night. Completely lost the
jazz swing groove of the electric version
Reality check - I asked some college guys to sit down and one of
'em says "why don't you go see Neil Diamond!!" - pretty funny!
So we stood and loved it !!!

A couple of comments...
1) A LOT of the people there simply NEED to get out more often.
2) His new guitarist acts like he's in some lame-o heavy metal band.
Does anyone have a full set list...?
Later...

| Great show, much better than 1988 on par with ones before that.
If you left after Born to RUn he only did 2 more songs, My Beautiful
Reward and Working on the Highway (?).
First set was ok, Beginning of second set was good, then slowed down
for a while and then really picked up. Best part of the evening
was in the encore:
Hungry Heart - sing along
Thunder Road - acoustic (more or less singalong)
Born To Run
Interesting part is that it was his pre Tunnel of Love tunes that got
the biggest response from the crowd. Show ended at just about midnight.
Biggest disappointment: Not seeing Clarence Clemens up there. Oh well.
|
125.178 | Set list for August 13 | PIPE::GOOD | Michael Good | Fri Aug 14 1992 16:45 | 69 |
| What a great show! It was fully in keeping with my memories of the
only other Springsteen concert I attended in '78. The songs and band
were different, of course, but it was just as powerful and just as
long. I enjoy a lot of rock concerts, but to me Springsteen has no
equal as a rock concert performer.
So many highlights: the turn-on-a-dime mood change between the anger
of Badlands and the joy of Living Proof, the phenomenal acoustic
renditions of Spirit in the Night and Thunder Road, the really long
version of Roll of the Dice (like the way he treated Prove It All Night
and Backstreets in the '78 show), the literal Leap of Faith, and all
the encores. It takes a brave man tempting fate to sing a duet with
his wife on Brilliant Disguise, but it was beautiful.
The second set was a little oddly paced, but then came the encores and
all was right with the world again. The mix was also not ideal, at
least where we were sitting - too much drums and not enough guitar, and
especially not enough of the male backup vocalist in the duets that
closed the first set.
But there's still no question that this was the best rock concert I've
been to in almost 15 years. And I don't care what other folks think, I
really enjoy the new band and the new twists they bring to the music.
I suspect Bruce deliberately picked the guitarist in part because he
doesn't at all look like you'd expect Springsteen's guitarist to look.
Of course he's a fine player as well.

frustration with the "but I never heard him play anything difficult"

not as much as singing and dancing. His (and Shayne's?) Star-Spangled

had to stand on our seats, for the whole show, in order to see,
but...other than that, it was great.
The highlight for me was Real World, which is my favorite song from the
2 new albums. It was a great show, but I'd have to say that the Monday
night show in New Jersey was a tad better. In NJ he stayed out until
12:30, and did more of his older hits. But, I'm glad I saw him twice
this tour. Once wouldn't have been enough.
Also, I still think Bruce is the most attractive looking man in

They were speculating whether or not a Live CD would come out of the

possibility.
Also, the show will be filmed in LA with a small "invited" audience.

Last night, Springsteen taped the "Unplugged" segment for MTV in LA.
It was unsure if it was just Bruce solo or if he used some of the band

| FINALLY!!!!
Bruce will be playing in minneapolis on halloween night! tickets
go on sale saturday.
ticketmaster outlets are doing a new thing - a
lottery (not wristbands). you go to the outlet by 8am, everyone is
given a piece of paper. you put your name on it and then all names are
put in a bucket and names are then picked for places in line.
this sounds a easier for me to get tickets, since whenever i've tried
to get wrist bands they've been gone by the time i get there after
work!
now i just have to be there around 8am, unfortunatly, i miss out on the
"joy" of waiting in line in the cold at 4AM !

| It looks like the Bruce Springsteen "UNPLUGGED" show will be renamed.
Apparently Bruce was not happy with the unplugged set so they recorded
the show "plugged". There weren't any surprises in this show. I don't
have the set list with me today but it was basically the exact same set
he has been doing on tour. (Better Days, Local Hero...)
The show will be renamed "BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN....PLUGGED" and will still
air on 11/11.
The LA Times also reported yesterday that an album will be released
from this show near X-mas.
Shows have also been added in October for Lexington, KY, and St. Louis,
MO. (Not sure of the dates but tix are on sale Sat)

It's possible that he may play 2 more dates there as well . The Skydome
should pack about 60,000 screamers in . Single seats are going for
about $32 (Canadian) .
I'll be making the trip about 250 miles down Thunder road to get
there . Looking forward to it .

and 6002 was the number called to be first in line! so by 9:10 i had
my tickets! the only bad thing was that you had no choice in the
seats. if you wanted 6 tickets, you got what popped up next on the
computer.
i got section 138 row F. this is across from the stage on the corner.
not too bad. the first few people got floor row 10.
just before tix went on sale it was announced that the max number had
been raised to 6, it was 4.

125.219 | Does the Boss plan to return to Europe next year???? | KBOMFG::TANNER | We're one, but we're not the same | Wed Oct 07 1992 10:24 | 13 |

Does anybody out there know if Bruce will return to Europe next year???? His
tour here was crazy, he only played one date in Germany, he would have easily
sold out 10-20. Its no surprise that neither of his new records are good when he
only performs a few concerts... I have to admit I haven't bought either record,
which is something unusual for me as I have most of the others. But after
hearing the tune "57 channels" I couldn't believe that Bruce would write
something like that... Bring back the E-street band, and then we'll have "glory
days" again.....

Lorna, look at the record charts worldwide and you will see that both Albums
have been commercial flops. His shows will probably always remain awesome, they
are real value for money because he always plays for 3-4 hours. Do you really
think you can compare either album to "Born in the USA", or "The River" or
"Nebraska" for example. I was at his "Tunnel of Love" concert a few years back
and it the only concert to compare with it was this years "ZOO TV" U2 tour....
I personally miss the E-Street band, Bruce is no longer the boss without
them....
-dave-
|
125.222 | I beg to differ | GRANMA::BORCHANT | | Tue Oct 13 1992 09:21 | 27 |
| I still beg to differ. Commercial sales aren't always the barometer
for greatness. Granted BITUSA was a great album in every sense of the
word; a commercial and "artistic" success. It was Bruce's Breakthrough
album as it was his firtst (and only) mega-selling album.
And that's my point. While his others, such as The River & Born to
Run, were successful, they never approached the "mega" status.
When one compares the work of any artist one must be careful. Better
than/ worse than are words that should be chosen carefully.
I, for one, am not at all disappointed by Human Touch and Lucky Town.
For me, they are the 2 albums that have come out this year that I enjoy
the most-bar none. For me a "sub par" Bruce work is better than most
of the other stuff that gets released.
Rather than saying these works are better or worse, let's say they are
different than other Bruce works. I think we can all agree that they
are very personal works and indicative of a man whose life has changed
in many ways since BITUSA and Tunnel of Love.
For me, however, these are Better Days. His live shows are as
masterful as ever. I admire Bruce's courage and ability to assemble a
new band that now plays at an incredible level. While they might not
be the old friends of the E Street Band, they're is something magical
about Bruce leading these "youngsters" (exception to Roy Bittain) to
the level they have attained so quickly.

| re .221, re Dave, I'm afraid I agree with .222's reasoning on this one,
and as .223 said although Bruce's new albums didn't top the charts,
they've sold well. Patty and the kids will eat this winter. :-)
To some extent it's a matter of personal taste, or maybe mostly a
matter of personal taste. I like Human Touch a lot better than I liked
Tunnel of Love, and Nebraska (altho I love "Meet me tonite in Atlantic
City..") is my least favorite Bruce album. I think The River may be my
all-time favorite album, with Born To Run and Darkness At The Edge of
Town as close follow-ups. After that I like Born In The USA, and Human
Touch. I'm not as crazy about Tunnel of Love, Nebraska or Lucky Town.
I like Bruce's faster stuff. (If I'm going to listen to something slow
I'll usually switch to Van Morrison.)
As far as Bruce's concerts go, I've seen him 6 times - twice during
Born In The USA, twice during Tunnel of Love, and twice this time. No
concert will ever top, for me, the first moment I ever saw Bruce on
stage live, but I enjoyed this year's shows more than I did The Tunnel
of Love shows (altho I liked them, too!)
I'm just glad he's still around and still going strong.

Lorna, rjc, and .222, Iam not trying to run down Bruces albums even it
sounds, or looks that way. I agree that both albums are a lot better than some
of the trash that comes out on the market.
When I talked about commercial success I was refering to Europe and NOT USA.
He hasn't had much success with either album over here. Don't get me wrong folks
I have loved the guy ever since I heard the album "Greetings from Asbury park"
now that's going back a bit!!!!!
Lorna I agree, the River is the best album the boss produced. I think he
made a mistake bringing out two Albums at one time. If he had put 12 songs out
of the selection he had on one, then we would have had one hell of a good album.
I bet he was influenced by the success Guns & Roses had and still have with "Use
your Illusion 1 and 2"
Iam sorry to say that the single "57 channels" is the worst single Bruce
has released since I recall. Nobody over here likes the tune, no radio station
plays it, and I have only seen it been played twice on MTV.
I just hope he comes back here and plays a few concerts, maybe then folks
will buy his albums.

The album version of 57 channels bites the big one to me
too. However, live it turns into the funkiest, wildest,
free form Hendrix-like tune. The beat is very heavy with
a great groove and Bruce goes totally berserk on guitar
between each verse and also takes a great solo.
Btw, the Saturday Night Live version was on that line but
totally subdued compared to in concert.
Among his worst album tunes but one of the best live.
Really...

funky...more folky/country like...when I 1st heard the studio cut I
almost lost it....it was good live I do admit but I love the acoustic
boot alot better...maybe he will do it this way on the Unplugged gig
but I heard he didn't like the unplugged concept that much so went
electic ? BTW the boot I refer to was recorded back in late 1990....way

125.229 | TACOMA DOME - 10/13 | HOTWTR::WEINER_CA | Caren with a C | Tue Oct 20 1992 15:01 | 40 |
| Bruce was up here in the Northwest last week (10/13) at the Tacoma
Dome. Being a die-hard fan and having spent some nights in line
waiting for tickets when I lived back east, I was utterly amazed
that I could get in line for tickets 2 hours before they went on
sale and be about 50th in line here in Seattle! I was even more
astounded to hear the show did not even sell out and the Tacoma
Dome is not that big of a place!
The day of the show, we listened to the radio all day to make sure
the show would be on because City of Tacoma workers were on strike
and they were picketing in front of the dome. The radio said the
show was on and when we got there, the picketers had signs that said
"Bruce - You Talk the Line, Now Walk the Line". At the opening of
the show, Bruce came out and said that he wasn't taking sides in the
labor dispute and he hoped it all worked out and if the picketers get
some free press because of him, that was great, but he had a commitment
to play and he knew that people had traveled a long distance to come
hear him and he was going to play.
The concert was, as always, awesome. But, I have to say, it's not the
same as the concerts on the east coast. I have seen Bruce at the
Capitol Centre, Nassau Coliseum, the Garden (including at the No Nukes
Concert - I'm really dating myself now!!), several times at each place,
and the crowds are so psyched and so into the show, it makes it a
completely different experience. At the Tacoma show, yes, the crowd
was on their feet for almost the whole show, but most of the people
were just standing there, not singing, not dancing, they were just not
into it like on the east coast. I felt the same thing to a lesser
extent when I saw him a couple years ago at the Oakland Coliseum in
California. By the way, Bruce was supposed to have played up in
Oakland during the week of 10/5 for 2 shows but he had a throat
infection or something and had to postpone and he will be playing
there 10/21 and 22 instead.
So, all in all, even though it was easy to get tickets to see Bruce
in a relatively small concert hall in the Northwest, I would much
rather go through the hassle of getting tickets for worse seats
to see him with all my other die-hard friends from the U. of Maryland!!
On another note - any Southside Johnny fans out there? Anyone know
whether he's been touring or doing anything new? You can't even find
any of Southside's music up here!

halloween was truely a religious experience! bruce started about 40
minutes late, but it was well worth it. my seat was excellent! for the
first time i actually had no one in front of me. a perfect view
(binoculars did help).
the band came on the stage in the midst of halloween sounds (chains,
howls....) and then an upright coffin appeared. the coffin was opened
and there was bruce (looking dead and covered with dust). he was handed
a guitar, someone brushed him off, headed to the microphone and started
right off with "spirits in the night". it was all uphill from there.
the review in the papaer said that the crowd seemed more subduded and i
have to concur on that. of course the people in the leaping zone were
crazy, but the rest of the place wasn't that rowdy. maybe because his
ongs seemed to have mellowed.
but it was a fantastic show! it was the first "rock" concert of one of
the people i went with - what a way to get initiated! the show ended a
bit before midnight. i hope he made it out of town before the annual
halloween snow storm (started snowing yesterday and still falling).

Overall, I was pretty disappointed with last night's show. With a few
exceptions (basically the older songs), there seemed to be a lack of
passion that Bruce has always previously brought the music. I mean, that
had to be the most polite version of "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" that
I've ever heard!
I dunno - I guess it was ok. It's just that I've come to expect great things

I will appreciate to receive the following info:
- Where the concert is ? (address)
- Is tickets still available, what is the price, how is it
possible to buy them (I need four).
- How is the best way to reach Philadelphia from New York
(train, rent-car, ..) and the time to spend for that.
Thanks in advance for your response.

I thought this show was better than the ones I saw in Worcester,

| Saw Bruce last Tuesday in the Miami Arena (30th row center!). The show
is basically the same as the ones he did in New Jersey in August.
Changes were slight, they included adding the song Soul Driver (done
slowed down with only Roy backing him up). Also, Patti was not there
to back him up on Human Touch, etc.
The arena is a nice place for a concert about 16,000 seats, small
orchestra area, parking galore. However, the crowds are different,
most (not all) people were up and dancing but only for the more well
known tunes, they seemed very disinterested in the newer stuff. And
the ushers, what a bunch of jerks - give someone a flashlight and they
think they're all powerful!
BTW - my morning radio station said the MTV Plugged concert is to be
released on video December 15th with a couple of additional songs. The
laser disk very (which will have one more song not on VHS) will be
released in January.

| Comment on "Viva las vegas"
I love Bruce, but I've sold that CD ("A tribute to Elvis"). I think that
version has nothing special, especially because you pay for other 23/25
songs without any interest. If you want to capture the interest of other
people on Bruce, I don't feel that song is the right one.
Request for "Light of day"
Is there any record/bootleg where to find the Bruce version of "Light of
day"? I heard that medley in the Rome concert and I definitevely love it!

He played 3 1/2 hours, w/ a 30 minute break. He played a lot from both

The ending was great although the sound level became almost intolerable
at one point.

Antonio,
There's a version of "Light of Day" on the bootleg CD "Roses and Broken
Hearts" (on Great Dane Records, ref. GDR 9221).
This CD, for its sound quality, packaging and show performance is
highly recommended. It was recorded at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in
Mountain View (CA.) on 5/3/88.
I saw a video last Saturday, an kind of Italian funky band called
CO RO was singing "Because the Night". That was ... awful !!
Sister Patti Smith, please, pray for them.

Glory Days w/ Jon Landau on guitar
Santa Claus is Coming To Town
In The Midnight Hour w/ Peter Wolf
I have been to Jersey, Hartford, Syracuse, Worcester, and Philly and have to say
that the best show on the tour was last night. The energy was there the band was
the tightest I've seen. It's too bad that the tour has ended. I hope that it

Hi...
Just dropping into say that I thought last night's show was great!
I was glad he did quite a bit of his older stuff. The audience sang
thru Hungry Heart before he did. Thunder Road was nicely done and
dedicated to his 'long-time fans'. He also did Born to Run.
He didn't seem to talk as much at this show as when I saw him on the
Tunnel of Love tour, but he is always such a crowd pleaser. Security
must have been going nuts with him constantly going near/into the
audience...like the bit with the audience holding him up/hauling him
back up to the stage during "Leap of Faith"!
My only disappointment....no "Dancing in the Dark"

| My review....
The show was very tight from the get go....we had very good seats and
the crowd was very mellow as no drunken fools sitting near us or
talkers talking louder than the PA....sound was just fine too, it was
loud but clear !! after seeing this show and an A'smith and 6 Dead shows
in the BG over the past few years I've come to rilly like going to the
BG for shows !.....I know its not the building that has changed, its
the hi-tec PAs bands have now rilly make the venue sound good....and a
little has to do with seat location :')
We parked at 75 State St., the one with the nice lobby ! the cost went
from $5 to $7 in one year ! walked to BG found our seats (sec 109 row 7
dead center behind the stage....and a set of speakers right above us...
we sat back had a beer and did some people watching !
lights went down and as the band entered the stage area, Bruce stood at
the bottom of the stairs and like a team just about to start a game, he
greeted each of the band members with a hug and a few words.....Bruce
walks up the the mic center stage and in a deep purple and blue light
started off the 3.5+ hour show with Red Headed Woman alone and on
acoustic guitar (w/ his old electric Fender slung over his back)
and from there it just got big and better...not like the dead but in
their own way they did some great jamming (some planned some not Im sure).
He can rilly bring a crowd to a fever pitch and then gentle hold them
in his hand with a sweet personal touch.....only to bring them back to
the fire.....near the end of Light of Day the band came to a complete
stop (motion and music) and with the crowd screaming and clapping stood
still for more then 2 minutes to only kick back into the song with the
same energy it had when it stopped.
And Bruce , who is well known for carring out the end of a song
forever :') kept this going all night much to the crowds delight !
the 1st guest was Bruce's manager Jon Landau for Glory Days (Bruce's
intro for him was something like...."....and on guitar the man that gos
to the record company to get me more money...."
and after many Santa hats made there way to the stage the band kicked
into Santa's coming to Town and a Christmas Tree came down from the
rafters and a very tall Santa strolled out on the stage....
and just when we figured the show was over and we had already left the
hall into the tunnels I heard Bruce introduce Pete Wolf.....about face
we went and back to our seats to watch what I felt was the high-light
of the show ! I forgot how wild Pete was back in his heyday ! wirey
little nut that he is ! they rocked through Midnight hour (being it was
about mid-night, what band could not resist such easy jam number !)
it was very un-rehearsed and it was quite fun for the band and for the
crowd !
well now we say it must be over....and I hope it was, he has been known
to walk back out after like five minutes after the house lights have
been on to do a few more tunes !!! but I have not heard otherwise....
we head to the car, the cold winter air was rilly refreshing after a
being in the garden for about 4 hours.....walked into the lobby to the
elevator down to the car and out to the express way and home by 1am....
heres a list of what I could remember of songs, and nowheres near the
order...:')

125.319 | More on the Warm Up | GRANMA::BORCHANT | | Mon Mar 29 1993 09:12 | 15 |
| More on this warm up show:
Bruce kind of through away the set list and did many "lost relics" that
are virtually unheard of and unknown to many. Some of the tunes he did
that are examples of this were This hard Land & Janey Don't You Lose
Heart. He also did Point Blank off "The River" as well as Viva Las
Vegas and Blinded by the Light.
The band from last year's tour remained intact and quite a bit of the
rest of the show contained familiar tunes from the'92 tour: Human
Touch, Leap of Faith, Man's Job, Roll of the Dice, Darkness on the Edge
of Town and so forth. Max Weinberg guested on Glory Days.
So now it's on to Europe for aopproximately 2 months and then...who
knows.

| Don VonTress wrote Achey-Breaky and .323 is correct: another band
recorded it first but got nowhere. My guess is that Billy Ray Cyrus
had a hit with it as result of the video, which basically emphasized
the 'looks' side of things. He somehow got known as a hunk ('...looks
like Mel Gibson, sings like Elvis...' was one quote I heard) and
parlayed that and this hooky little tune into platinum.
Actually, I heard von Tress in a radio interview and I liked him. He's
a wall paper hanger who writes songs...and he hasn't given up his day
gig as a result of ABheart.

I saw him in Glasgow...( this is the first time Bruce has played
Scotland since his river tour played Edinburgh )
He came on stage at 7:40 and the concert finished at 11:00 with
working on the highway being his 3rd oncour..
This is the 3rd time I have seen him ...the last two being outdoor
gigs in England..he was of course excellent but he is far better
playing to an open air stadium....The venue only held 12,000 but
the atmosphere was great ( he relly seemed to go out his way to
aplogise for not comong back sooner ) all in all Still the best
live act around
By the way Patti wasn't on stage for any part of the show ,does anyone
know if she will be appearing later in the tour

The show was absolutely the best I've seen since "The River" tour. The
structure was much the same as the previously noted Glasgow Tour but
much had been added:
* Three acoustic tracks to start - none written by BS
* "Rockin All Over the World" and "Viva Las Vegas"!!
* A couple of Gospel-inspired tracks with his singers
* A Curtis Mayfield number "Its Alright" to close.
Good stuff.

This was the first time I saw the new band in concert. The first part
wasn't very exciting (I didn't like the new band), but the raport between
Bruce and the public was so magic that the second part and the bis (encore)
were really enthusiastic.
The new band is not comparable to the E-Street-Band (except King, the
pretty and clever Crystal, and obviously Roy Bittan), but Bruce's concerts
are a world apart anyway.
This is the list of the songs of the Rome concert (4 hours totally,
3h33'41" of pure music).

********ACOUSTIC SONGS******
The Madowlands Show is likely to rank as the best of the 92-93 tour and
you can see why based upon the set list and surprises and the fact that
it was a 4 hour show.
The Garden Show will rank as, perhaps the biggest let down as
expectations were sky high based upon the Thursday show. Also, the
6/26 audience was PATHETIC! The crowd booed Terrence Trent Darby
during his acoustic piece and the entire audience was punsihed because
of the rudeness of a minority in attendance. Bruce was visibly PISSED
and he even had a few choice words for the crowd during Light of Day.
The 6/26 show is notable for its missing songs-Born in the USA and 10th
Avenue Freeze Out were passed over despite their presence on the set
list, and Thunder Road wasn't played.
However, even a less than stellar Springsteen show is better
than...well, almost anything!!!

Over here in holland, the new single of the boss is called Streets of Philadelphia.
I believe it is a soundtrack thing or something.
But more interesting,

His wife is now awaiting his forth? kid, and if she gets pregnant again, he's

mean it. (No big deal, really.) I thought she *just* had their 3rd kid.
If she's already pregnant again, that would be sort've unusual for this

What I wondered about more was Tom Hanks, relative to Bruce winning the
award.
First, Bruce left the stage saying, "...and thanks for inviting me to
your party." The camera turns to Tom Hanks, where you could pretty
clearly read his expression - and his lips - as he mouthed something
like 'What party?! This isn't a party?! What the hell's he talking
about ?!' (Note: This is not a quote, inexact or otherwise!)
Later, when Hanks was getting all choked up in his acceptance speech,
he mentioned the songs from the movie, and quickly went on to explain
that he was mentioning the Neil song...not the Springsteen version.
Dunno...just seemed like Hanks had some sort of bug up about Bruce.
Anyone know what that's about?

| I just saw a World Cup football match from the states and reminded me
that one of my objectives in life is to see Springsteen play in New
Jersey in one of those stadiums. (I'm in the UK).
Is he still 'big' enough to play stadiums in the states ? I know at
the Milton Keynes bowl (about 40,000 people) last year they were
selling tickets at half price at the end to get people in. (I thought
it was the best show i'd seen him do - the new band was tight).
If so how would I get a ticket - Is there a mailing list for
show dates ? In the UK I would watch the press - whats the best way
of finding out dates of tours in the US. If I just turned up what
would be the chances of buying a ticket outside and how much extra
would I have to pay ?
I am pretty sure there's no tour this year. The reason I am posting this
note now is I have just been chopped and will lose the many US based
contacts currently available through these notes files.
I enjoyed reading them.

If you look back a few notes you'll find the internet address for the
Backstreets digest. This will keep you up to date with all the latest
rumours. It includes contributions by Charles Cross who publishes the
U.S Bruce fanzine and Michael Scialfa , patti's brother.
It also provides the Backstreets Tix service for the latest news on
ticket availability. From what I can gather from the U.S ticket vending
system you'll need a good friend in the city in which he will appear.
I dont know about performances this year. Rumours abound of a release
in September and a tour thereafter. You can continue to get the service
from any of several inexpensive commercial internet providers.

Used w/o Permission January 30, 1995 USA TODAY
Fans of the Boss should delight in the last-minute changes on Bruce
Springsteen Greatest Hits, due Feb. 28. Springsteen's first
greatest-hits collection will contain four new songs recorded with his
former E Street Band, not just two, among 18 tracks. The new songs are
Secret Garden, This Hard Land and Previously unannounced Blood Brothers
and Murder Incorporated, expected to be the first single. It's a dark,
driving rocker about street violence originally recorded for Born in
the U.S.A. Rumors of a 16-show summer tour are so persistent that some
Los Angeles ticket brokers are accepting deposits, though no dates have
been booked yet.

Warning - long post!
I was way too wired last night to even attempt to post a review, and now some
have beaten me to it. I can say this much -- I had more fun last night than
should be allowed. And an appropriate club for Bruce, no?
First off, MI rocks live. It blows away the studio version. Being as though
the video was shot live, you should all get a chance to see this for
yourself. FWIW, I thought the best takes (band-wise) were the third and the
fifth.
Filming started at about 7:30. Demme made a few remarks to the crowd and
brought the band on. Cheers for each band member as they appeared, loudest
for the Big Man (of course). They went through MI and then paused for a
while, as Bruce awaited further instructions from Demme. Then, realizing it
would take a while, he kicked the band into Prove It, and from there into
Darkness. the cameras were reset and they did MI for a second time, before
taking a break.
After the break, they opened with Bobby Jean. I think the idea was to get a
running start for MI, and though there was too long a break between them for
a seamless transition, it lead to one of the hottest MI's of the night. From
there, Clarence started Spirit with the sax solo. Back to MI and then
another break.
Various band members (Max, Garry, Steve, Danny) were wandering through the
crowd, although Bruce, Patti and Clarence hid backstage.
Back again for MI. Cameras had been moved to the stage for crowd shots.
(I'm wearing a green army jacket over a gray sweatshirt - look for me).
Then a tease of the opening bars of Darlington, which never materialized.
But Cadillac did. All that was missing was Nils' Hoboken cowboy hat. Bruce
then called Steve to center stage for Two Hearts (which I think was
influenced by a call from the crowd for it). Steve looked ambivalent about
taking the spotlight at first. Bruce then asked for a G-harp and closed the
third "set" with This Hard Land. THL sounded great, but being the quietest
song of the night, it couldn't compete.
Then came the dinner break. Interminable (but then again, I was too wired to
eat.) Back for one last MI. From there, the crews thinned out a little and
Bruce took over, as if thinking to himself - "that's over, now lets have some
fun." Badlands first, followed by "a Mighty Max request" for Ramrod. Long
pause between the next two songs, at which point the crowd asked for just
about everything Bruce has ever written (and one request for Rumble Doll
which put a smile on Patti's face). And he responded with the one song that
can never disappoint - Thunder Road. I think that it was at this point that
Bruce introduced the band "because it had to be done." From there,
amazingly, into Backstreets. Max then went into the opening for Light of
Day, but what came out of it was Little Latin Lupe Lu. Steve, Nils, Clarence
and Danny each took featured solos and then Bruce brought his wife down
center to duet with him, he brought the music all the way down and was
signing a cappella. But, for whatever reason, Patti didn't want to sing.
When she went back to her microphone, Bruce said, "She's never that shy at
home."
As to what happens next -- whether we want to believe it or not, nothing is
set. Bruce himself acknowledged that much when he was leaving the stage:
"We'll see you - when we see you!"
With regard to the crowd, I heard one report that the casting crew actually
signed up some people at a music store over the weekend. I'm not sure what
the largest contingent was, but it seemed like there were a lot of fans
there. It wasn't industry people for the most part. By the end of the
night, I expected Lee Mrowicki to come on the PA and say "The Stone Pony is
now closed." And I know that at least some fans without great connections
made their way in! Thanks. Those who made it possible know who they are.

Wow, what a memorable night. I'll keep it short since the set lists and a few
comments were already posted. I was one of the 4-6 FANS standing outside
throughout the first and most of the second set. Luckily they had to keep a
few windows open to run cable through, so the sound was perfect on the
sidewalk. <g> I'd like to thank whoever finally let us all inside. Random
thoughts: Nils and Steve were having a blast. Bruce looked very tired.
Clarence was great during "Cadillac Ranch." "Ramrod" was by request for some
girl's birthday (also J. Demme's). Great to hear "Backstreets" again ! It was
good to hear "Thunder Road" the way it was meant to be played. t one point
when everyone was shouting out requests, someone repeatedly YELLED "Rumble
Doll !" Patti blushed and smiled at them. She bent over and poined them out to
Danny and Bruce. She yelled back "Thank you!!" They responded "No, thank you"
Bruce smiled and played the opening chords to it, but Patti embarasingly shook
her head with a smile. I think the bigest surprise for me was the purpose of
the night. Murder incorporated ABSOLUTLY ROCKS live !!!! Oh, free food and
open bar weren't half bad either!

It is now 2:09am and I just got home from seeing
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND LIVE for 4 HOURS!!!!
The place was Tramps in NYC for the video shoot of Murder
Inc. I got there about 8:15pm after getting an extremely generous tip
from a friend and saw several huge video
production trucks outside. There was a security guard
letting in people who were on the "list" and me & only 5 or
so people were left standing outside. We could hear Murder
Inc being played as we stood out in the cold. We asked the
guard to help us out...but no dice.
Finally, I had to go to the bathroom, so I went into Tramps
Cafe (a restaurant next door & attached) and was able
to sneak my way in. The place was pretty crowded with pretty "hip"
people (no suits) although many of them were more industry types
and not actual fans.
After Bruce finished Murder Inc, the camera crew said "we
have to reset the cameras...so why don't you play another
song while we're waiting"...so he launches into Spirit in
the Night. Finally he takes a break & tells everyone that
there is plenty of food & an open bar in back...so I make a
beeline for the front of the stage while everyone eats the
free food. After a long break...the crew (Jonathan Demme
directing) says that this next take is of US (the audience).
We all rush forward & Bruce & the band play another SEARING
version of Murder Inc with the cameras scanning us (I'll
almost certainly be in the crowd shots of this video).
The rest of the night was the set list mentioned earlier.
It finally ended around 12:45am with Bruce saying
"thanks...we'll see you...when we see you!"
The most spectacular night of music I've ever seen. I took
a few pictures, but mostly without a flash b/c they
were real strict about security during the video shoot. I
did see a couple people with camcorders & I'm sure a tape
will surface.
What a fantastic night!!!
Standing 5 feet from Bruce & the E Street Band in a small
club in NYC for 4 hours!!!
Life is good.....

Don't know about Petty, but the other Bruce - Hornsby that is -
puts a hat down in front of the stage and the audience writes down requests
and puts them in the hat. At one time he did entire shows of requests, but
lately has just tried to work in some of the better ones. And based on a fan
club poll, Phish performed the entire Beatles White Album at their Halloween
show last October.

I wouldn't say which of the three titles are better. All 3 are great.

I heard a new title is coming out:

came on, Bruce announced to the crowd "Now we're gonna bring out Terrence",
or something to that effect. The crowd, thinking that he had said
CLARENCE, went nuts...until they found out that they were wrong and
(apparently) began booing in their disappointment.
If this is inaccurate, by all means, let me know...

With all this talk of favourite sides of albums, and albums with the best contin
uity, maybe it would be fun
to blend tracks from as many different albums as poss. (preferably with no more
than one song from one
album) into a 10-track album, taking into account styles of music that would ble
nd, subject matters, songs
that might reflect and comment on each other (how about an album that started in

I do hope that the person who complained about Murder Inc. missing the

As for great segues, the transition from Incident to Rosie is remarkable.
I'm sure many agree that they are in so many ways one song. Meeting Across
the River into Jungleland is one of my favorites. Again, I believe (as I'm
sure many others do) that these two songs not only musically flow together
well, but that these two feed into each other thematically as well. And
someone mentioned one of my other faves, the segue from Does This Bus...? to
Lost In The Flood.

TRAVEL NEWS IN BRIEF
VIETNAM CULTURE
HUE, Vietnam, KRT _ Top rockers such as Bob Dylan, Bruce
Springsteen, Neil Young and Sting may perform at a cultural
festival in Vietnam in June, according to the Vietnam Investment
Review, a Vietnamese weekly.
An organiser said the festival, scheduled for June 25-26
in the ancient city of Hue in central Vietnam, will be called
"Mightier Than the Sword."
The event, to be broadcast by satellite, would combine a
range of Indochinese music, songs, poetry, dance, images and words
with a similar range of Western culture "to signal Vietnam's full
re-emergence into the world community."

This provides no further information than what was posted earlier,
but shows that the show is still being talked about with the same

Vietnamese newsagency, but am willing to be corrected on this.)
Any news about this from other parts of the world?

Subject: Unique Springsteen Item Donated For Auction By Mighty Max
Hi! This is Mighty Max Weinberg. I've got news of a unique, one-time
opportunity to do a good deed while acquiring an extraordinary piece of
rare rock & roll memorabilia. To help out a very worthy school, I managed
to get Bruce Springsteen and the other members of the E Street band (Little
Steven, too!) to chip in their signatures for a good cause. Here are the
details:
THE ITEM
In January, Bruce and the E Street Band reunited to record new songs for
Bruce's Greatest Hits album. On February 21st, 1995 we shot the video for
'Murder Incorporated' at Tramps in New York City. On that occasion, all of
us autographed a 22" bass drum head of mine: Bruce Springsteen's signature
in the center, saying 'Thanks!', surrounded by the signatures of Patti
Scialfa, Clarence Clemons, Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Danny
Federici, myself and Little Steven Van Zandt! Nothing else was signed by
all of us that night, and to the best of my knowledge we have never jointly
signed a drum head before. That makes this memento of 'Murder Incorporated'
a truly unique item. The drum head comes with a letter of authenticity from
me, attesting to the circumstances surrounding its creation.
THE CAUSE
The Vincent S. Mastro Montessori Academy of Little Silver, New Jersey, is a
wonderful local institution that could use some financial help. It was for
the school that we all signed the item, and it is for the benefit of the
school that I am now auctioning it off. The school's live benefit auction
will be held on April 1, 1995 in Little Silver, but to increase the chances
of matching up this prize with the most appropriate bidder, I have decided
to hold a pre-auction here in cyberspace.
THE AUCTION
To get the maximum exposure for this event, while at the same time not
taking up too much bandwidth, this announcement is being widely posted one
time throughout the net and online services. The auction itself, however,
will be held through email. Here is how it works: the minimum opening bid
for the drum head is $5,000 (hey, at that price I'll bid it in personally
because it's such a wonderful item!) All bids, in increments of $500,
should be sent to the auctioneer at the email address:
[email protected]. Every bid must include the complete name and
postal mailing address of the bidder, as well as day and evening telephone
numbers.
The first round of bidding will close at midnight EST on March 20th, 1995,
and on March 21st everyone who sent in a bid will receive by email the
current high bid. At that point the second round will open, and bids will
be accepted until midnight EST on March 24th, 1995. On March 24th, everyone
who submitted a bid in either round will be notified of the winning bid,
and the winner will have 24 hours to deliver to me a certified bank check,
payable to the Vincent S. Mastro Montessori Academy of Little Silver, NJ,
for the full amount. If the check doesn't arrive within 24 hours, we will
immediately offer it to the underbidder, continuing until the funds are
received.
I will hold the check until the live auction on April 1, at which point it
is possible (but unlikely) that someone will show up with a higher bid. If
that happens, I will return the cyberbid check to the high bidder, along
with a special piece of memorabilia from my own collection, and my thanks.
If it doesn't happen (which is what we expect), I will turn over the check
to the school, and send the drum head to the lucky new owner.
SPECIAL NOTES
This email address ([email protected]) is only to be used for bids
in this auction. It is NOT my personal account, I will not be getting
copies of the email to it and it will be deactivated immediately after the
auction. I do however, periodically scan both the luckytown mailing list
and the alt.fan.conan-obrien news group, so you never know. WebMasters of
Springsteen-related sites are encouraged to re-post this announcement, so
that we can spread the word even further. My special thanks go to all who
helped pull this cyber-auction together. Finally, since this is completely
for charity, everyone involved with this auction expressly disclaims
liability for any direct or indirect damages that may occur to anyone who
chooses to participate. We cannot be responsible for undelivered or
mis-delivered electronic or paper mail, and we reserve the right to change
these rules at any time and without notice. But now, on with the auction.
See you online!

The live E Street Band reunion is on VH1 tonight at 8 or 8:30.
It's also on again at 11:30 (I think)...
It's only 5 tunes for a half hour. I believe it's from the
taping of Murder Inc. in New York.

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen, he's playing on a friend's album,
either due out or out already. Joe Slobotnik or something like
that.
Bruce says he kinda likes just playing and not being in charge
for once.

I don't like Born in the USA album in general either, but if you've
never Closely listened to his first 3,4,5, albums and you still say
that you don't get it, I think yer missing out on some Great lyrix and
music...
check out "Greetings From Asbury PArk, NJ" "The Wild, The Innocent, &
The E Street Shuffle", "Born To Run", "Darkness on the Edge of Town"
even "The River" some great writing there...in particular his first 3
albums...skip the songs you've heard on the radio...get into the "deep
cuts" off the albums...

That's Joe Grushecky of the Iron City Houserockers, a band I
saw a bunch of times in good ole' Pittsburgh. Glad to hear
Joe might be hitting it bigger, I hear he quit his day job.

I have to say, I was glad to hear about that. He always said that
Woody Guthrie was a major influence. Woody's "The Ballad of Tom Joad"
was written right after Woody saw "The Grapes of Wrath," and it is a
piece of work that makes you realize why Woody was such a major influence
on some of today's most successful songwriters/singers/musicians, including
Springsteen.

It sounds like the little guy with the cloud over his head in some
old comic book (was it Superman? I don't remember), but I don't think
his last name had any vowels in it. :-)

Charlie Brown's favorite baseball player.
Believe it or not I've seen the Iron City House Rockers too, in
Pittsburgh in the early 1980s. Had no idea that anyone or anything
in that band had enough going to ever be associated with Bruce
Springsteen, talent or lack thereof notwithstanding, not even
Slobotnick...

Hi Hal,
The guy you are thinking about was Joe Mxbltx (or something like
that), who popped up occasionally in "Li'l Abner". He was the
unluckiest man in the world and walked around with a black cloud over
his head.
I do seem to recall some other character with no vowels in his last
name from old Superman comics too.

I got the CD yesterday, and it's terrific! I am particularly fond of
the title track and "Youngstown", which is on my player as I type this.
As far as tickets, I couldn't get any in Philadelphia, and have read
some real horror stories about scalpers and ticket agencies being in
cahoots with Ticketmaster and some sleazy stuff. I'll still probably
try to get some on the day of the show, but if you've got some to sell
for the Tower, let me know!

The Boss doesn't buy the myth
"Hard work can get you someplace. And if you're one in a million, maybe
you fall into fortune. But...hard work is not enough. So says
blue-collar-boy-turned-multimillionare Bruce Springsteen in an
interview with "60 Minutes" correspondent Ed Bradley to be broadcast
Sunday. Springsteen told Bradley he's seen his own success story used
to make the claim that "This is the U.S.A. Anybody can do it." And,
says the Boss, "that's not true."

Springsteen donates funds to newspaper strikers
DETROIT (Reuter) - Bruce Springsteen, the blue-collar rocker
whose songs often depict working-class struggles, has vowed to
donate proceeds from merchandise sales at his Detroit show to
striking newspaper union employees.
Springsteen took several minutes out of the middle of his
concert Wednesday to voice his support for unions and the
approximately 2,000 workers who walked off their jobs at the
Detroit Free Press and Detroit News nearly six months ago, union
officials said Thursday.
``I can't make individual judgments, but I do know whatever
their faults, unions have been the only powerful and effective
voice working people have ever had in the history of this
country -- and this town knows that more than any other,''
Springsteen said, according to a story in the Detroit Journal, an
on-line newspaper published by striking newspaper workers.
Springsteen plans to match the proceeds from the Wednesday
night concert with a donation of his own, a spokeswoman for the
singer said.
The 46-year old Springsteen, who last toured in 1992-93, is
now promoting his latest album, The Ghost of Tom Joad, which
takes its title from the main character of The Grapes of Wrath,
John Steinbeck's novel about the American underclass.
