Okay, so home on vacation I'm looking through the vinyl vaults and find
The Cars debut (I didn't buy it, I've gotten a lot of hand me downs
from people TFSO'ing their albums's for CD's, didn't even know I had it).
Okay, look at the track list on this thing:
- Good Times Roll
- My Best Friends Girl
- Just What I Needed
- I'm In Touch With Your World
- Don't Cha Stop
- You're All I've Got Tonight
- By Bye Love
- Moving In Stereo
- All Mixed Up
Geez, this thing's a Greatest Hits LP in itself! I think the only non
bona fide hit on this is "I'm In Touch With Your World". That's still
a 89% hit-ratio! Wow, I guess I'd call this delayed respect. And I
thought Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours," Steve Miller's "Book of Dreams," or
MJ's "Thriller" was something...

Took you long enough. 8^)
The only reason I actually bought the actual "Greatest Hits" CD
was to complete my Cars' discography. The debut is one of the
best albums of all time [IMO].

I agree, their debut album is one of the best I've ever
heard. I'll put in a plug for Candy-O too. I didn't like
it too much at first listen (compared to their debut), but
over time it holds up as one of my favorites in my collection
of over 2000 rock albums and cds.

I also agree. I saw them for the first time ~ '78 when WAAF was
sponsering them at an outdoor concert in Shrewsbury, Mass.
The thing got way to big and ended up being general admission at
the Providence Civic Center.
I have since seen them at least five more times. I hung in there
as an avid fan, but gave up towards the end. Their last albums
contained one good song each, maybe.
Their debut album, and Candy-O were great.

The Cars were supposed to have an anthology released recently,
but Newbury Comics didn't have any when I checked last week.
Was I misinformed, or did they run out, or did it just not come
out yet?

"Anthology: Just What I Needed" - The Cars
I peeked in the Newbury Comics web site and this was one of the
featured new releases, so I stopped by Friday night and picked
it up. I like the purple cover.
I didn't realize Ben and Ric were fighting ... that's too bad.
I'd love to hear some new stuff. I've seen them live, so I
could care less if they tour again. 8^)
There's 8 or 9 non-LP tracks on here ... a few demo versions of
hits, a few B-sides and a couple singles. 40 tracks in all. They
did quite well in capturing the "greatest hits", except:
The 3-song segue from "Candy'O" is missing ... they did include
"Double Life" and "Candy'O", but not together and "Shoobee Doo"
is missing.
"Double Trouble" is missing from "Door to Door".
Did you know that the best they ever did [according to Billboard]
was #3 with "Drive"? "Let's Go" got to #10, but besides that they
were basically a commercial flop before "Heartbeat City".
