| Re .0:
I've just gotta comment...
I regard myself as fairly liberated on all counts. I tend to have some trouble
with the "auto-guilt" reflex, though. I'd tend to rephrase your parting comment
as:
"_If_ times have changed, we may look back to the 80's and 90's and see top songs
which succeeded regardless of their performers' gender."
Excellent music shouldn't have to observe gender quotas in either direction,
IMHO.
If the point of .0 is that the music industry still shows a strong male-oriented
bias, I have zero experience to confirm or deny it. However, if more guys than
gals go into the music business, for whatever their reasons, that may or may not
change in twenty years.
One man's (<--- with neither pride nor shame) opinion-

Hey, rather defensive, aren't we? :-)

I think you mis-read .0. It sounded to me like he/she was saying that
things are much better in the 80s and 90s.

Please, I'm not complaining at all. Just making a point after
reading those lists.
They've come a long way, baby.

| I thought "Angie" by the Rollin Stones came out later than '73 ? Say
'77 or so?

94.6 | Admission of sore point... | ATIS01::ASHFORTH | | Mon Dec 16 1991 14:01 | 14 |
| Re .2:
Well, defensive isn't exactly correct, but I'll gladly plead guilty to this being
a long-standing sore point with me. I don't think female musicians need any
special preference because of their gender- excellence will out in any case.
However, I *do* think that explicitly identifying female musicians as deserving
of special treatment is, to me, a form of insult- sort of like we _guys_ have to
"spot them a few points," as it were. Yeah, right- tell that to Bonnie Raitt,
Mariah Carey, Madonna, Pat Benatar, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Deborah
Henson-Conant,......
Didn't mean to offend; hope I've made my comments more clear.

| "Angie" was off of Goat's Head Soup, which came out in 73.
Got it for Christmas that year, that's why I remember. Great poster
inside. Grossed my mother out. Which seems to be key when you're 13.
