If there are any artist that you just have to know "where are they
now?", I would highly recommend calling WZLX (radio station in Boston)
on a Sunday night (6-10pm) and talk to Barry Scott. This guy keeps up
all of the lost ones and has been very helpful when I was digging
around for certain albums or groups. I'm aware that this note was set
asside for the trivia side of most but just in case you HAVE to know...

performance only with spanish guitar was impeccable and pure.....

Last year, I ran into her during the Philadelphia Folk Festival (she
was performing, I was attending). She played Saturday night as I recall
and on Friday whe was visting the craft booths, like I was. We were
both looking at the backpack guitars, but they were too expensive for
both of us. She is really short (around 5') and looks like she had some
hard miles behind her, if you catch my drift. Her set on Saturday night
was one of the better ones that evening.

Janis Ian has a current project "in the can". I expected
to see the new release before Christmas, and have no idea
what the delay is all about, especially since her European
tour was probably scheduled in part to promote the delayed

    It's good but it's miserable.

Who does the song "I've got alot to learn about love"? It sounds
    like Steve Perry from Journey...

Ironically, it's a group of old Journey members, but NOT Steve Perry,
called Storm. Gregg Rollie (keys), Ross Valory (bass), and Steve Smith
(drums) are the ones from Journey. Gregg splits lead vocals with
Kevin Chalfant. Kevin must do vocals on the above song, unless Gregg's
voice has changed drastically (more irony! - one reason Gregg left Journey
was disatisfaction with Steve Perry's usurping of vocals).

2 reasons to avoid this album:

      1) 4/10 titles have a form of the word "love" in it. Having
garnered some high hopes for the new stuff, all's I can say is
"didn't these guys learn anything?" :^) Okay, so I'm not big
         on the newer Journey.

      2) Witness "Touch and Go" for a small sample of lyrics...

She's right there with a wiggle and a giggle...
Up, down, in and out, your love runs hot and cold...
So make it don't you fake it or just leave me alone...
Flip flop who's on top, gotta keep going on till we drop

I'd continue but I'm getting queasy...

Cub Koda, who was the front man for Brownsville Station is still
active. He lived in MA for awhile. He has recorded a number of albums
for small labels (like Baron, Black Rose, not to mention a "radio show"

Are there any left? Did they go out of business? Or, are they waiting
    for writable CDs?

| | I'm a day--well, O.K, several days--late and a dollar short, but I
just wanted to add a caveat to my earlier list. Those groups AREN'T
necessarily old faves of mine (certainly not The Waitresses--I hated
"I Know What Boys Like"). I'm just curious to see if they're all
still active or waiting tables at some chic restaurant hoping to
    be rediscovered.

Got one more to add...Survivor (aka "the poor man's Journey"). For
awhile, they coasted from the fallout of their big hit from the
"Rocky III" soundtrack, "Eye Of The Tiger." I know that their gui-
tarist/writer Jim Peterik, was at one time a member of Ides Of March
("I'm your vehicle, baby..."), but it's been quite a few years (may-
be seven??) since they've had any real chart action that I can recall.

And I'm mildly interested in whatever happened to Loverboy (aka "the
    poor man's Foreigner")...

As for Annie Lennox: I'm glad she's still pumpin'. I guess she had
to keep busy somehow, since Dave seems to have his finger in so many
pies of late (fronting The Spiritual Cowboys and producing saxophone
sex symbol Candy Dulfer's "Lily Was Here").

She does some wonderful playing on Van Morrison's "Hymns to

has her own album out? Have you heard it? Can you tell me
more (perhaps in another note)? Thanks!

Candy Dulfer is the daughter of one of Holland's most influential and
innovative sax players/composers, Hans Dulfer - the man behind "Hans
Dulfer and the perikels" and "Reflud". Her own album (I *think* it's
called Saxuality but will check) came out in '90 and is worth a try:
good funky/jazzy stuff with the exception of one or two dull ballads.
She also worked with Prince (Graffiti Bridge). So there's no sense in
calling her a sex symbol... She may be good-looking but that doesn't
mean she's not an excellent musician...

After one album each for Polydor and Columbia and two for Nemperor,
Andy Pratt faded from the major label scene. He released an EP locally
(in MA) in the early eighties and has since dropped totally out of

publishers can catch illegal use of their property. This includes even lyrics
printed on the back of albums.
Some people, Bob Dylan, for instance, won't allow full lyrics to be published
at all, except in the sheet music. Dylan usually omits a whole verse.

Yes, McCoy Tyner is a jazz pianist.

Toy and Tommy Caldwell were the guitarists for MTB.
Tommy did indeed die a number of years ago, and Toy did indeed
just die today or yesterday or something like that. I think
there's a note in GUITAR about it.

About 4 years ago the leader of a band called the Shaboo Alstars who's
name I can't recall went to LA to sell the band to a major label. While
he was discussing this with the record exec, the exec told him that
Miles, who'd recently been released from jail, was going to reform the
Electric Flag and would he be interested in taking Mike Bloomfield's
place. Needless to say, the Shaboo Alstars were not mentioned again. The
band disbanded and I never heard another thing about Buddy Miles or the

think Nic Potter was with him (on bass) - he named him, and the name
was familiar as I sat there, but I'm not sure whether it was Nic or
another vaguely familiar bass player's name. Peter seems to pop out

Of course Gary Wright went on to greater fame and fortune. Original
guitarist Luther Grosvenor briefly worked with Mott the Hoople and
later had a band called Widowmaker. His replacement, Mick Jones got
even richer than Gary Wright by starting Foreigner. Original bassist
Greg Ridley went to Humble Pie. His replacement, Chris Stewart worked
with Frankie Miller for a few years. Late-period vocalist Mike Patto
    died of throat cancer.

Alan Hull did a few solo albums after the band disbanded in the mid

Though it isn't strictly a bass topic, I've been hangin' with this group
too long not to want to tip my friends about a new band. Especially when
Lee Sklar is the bassist. :-)

Besides, my .sig line about "preserving the roadhouse tradition" is legit,
so:

The group is 1/3 ZZTop, 1/3 SRV, and 1/3 Allman Bros, and the whole
thing is generously seasoned with sprinklings of the Kentucky Headhunters,
and (believe it or not), Van Halen...(!?)

Making it even sweeter is that the production values on their debut record
are first rate, and the songs themselves are considerably above average.
Their overall *musicianship* and *tightness* is what takes my breath away,
though. This is n-o-t simple-to-play stuff, either. Very clever, most of
it.

Their name? "Barefoot Servants". Should be easy to find at any reasonably
stocked shop. Just released.

A final semi-caution to those who may be inclined to give this record a try,
on the strength of this recommendation, but haven't liked most roadhouse music
in the past:

The swampy, Allman-y, bluesy material is largely confined to the first half
of the disc, and the more progressive, funk-groove, Van Halen-y stuff shows
up on the second half. Meaning give *all* the tracks a listen before making
up your mind.

Enjoy.

Rock on,

George

| | Richard Greene was a bluegrass fiddler (he had worked with Bill Monroe
in fact) before Seatrain; after that band folded, he went back to
bluegrass, although of the more "newgrass" variety.

He was involved in some seminal projects like the "Muleskinner" album
with Clarence White, and recordings with David Grisman. He recorded a
solo LP for Rounder in the late seventies/early eighties and has also
    done sessions.

I haven't heard anything about him since the mid-eighties. I noticed
that the recent reunion of his old outfit the Blue Velvet Band has
Kenny Kosek in the fiddle seat.

astonishes me! I'm amazed that you have any spare cycles to devote to

massive amounts of more important information like this. <g>

Bluegrassers seem particularly adept at bad double-entendres (sp?) for
band names.

There's an old bluegrass song (Brian probably knows who wrote it :-)
called "The Girl With The Blue Velvet Band".

| | The Greene Quartet (w/Greene, obviously) released an album about 3-4
years ago called "Molly on the Shore." This is a string quartet that
blends some jazz/folk/bluegrass with classical, like Turtle Island.

There was an article on him in Strings magazine sometime in the last
couple of years. Maybe I can find it.

There are at least 2 Chesters out there. The drummer also
plays on Weather Report's "Black Market". That was my personal
favorite of theirs and, I believe, he's the drummer on the
killer title track. Narada Michael Walden also plays on it,
    	pre-disco/production days.

was just thinking I have to pull out Mr. Gone for a listen...haven't

nit-pick alert...Chester also toured with Phil Collins solo in the
past, but Phil is using a different drummer this tour..forget the name,
but there really is no Genesis for Chet to leave...

hopefully they will get together in a year or two, and go thru their
routine of jam for 2 weeks, decide to record, if so, record, then tour,
and that's when Chet is called upon...

Years ago, I worked at Dow Jones in Chicopee. A co-worker was a
really cool black guy from Springfield. He turned me on to
Weather Report around '77 or so. He left Dow Jones for some
    	other company.

In '80, Weather Report played in Boston (Music Hall? Orpheum?)
and I just HAD to go! Got ahold of Paul, after 3 years of not
seeing him and informed him of his plans to attend with me.

We had a blast - they opened with Black Market (I remember the
lights going out and hearing that voice at the beginning of the
tune) and Jaco did his Hendrix thing on the floor. On the way
home, Paul said "why don't you interview for Digital??".

So, like it or not, I'm here because of Weather Report...

Not sure of the name of the CD, but one of the tunes was "Spirits Dancing
in the Flesh" or some such title.
I've always enjoyed his work - got a MONSTER set of hands!

| | Thanks, Terry. I've been listening to ToP, Live and in Living Color and
his organ chops, particularly on "What is Hip" and "Knock Yourself Out",
are devastating. And to think that he's playing bass pedals on some of
    that stuff as well!
If he's given up playing B-3 in favor of synths, I'm sorry to hear that.

The lead singer, Derek Shulman became an A&R man and made his mark by
signing Jon Bon Jovi to his first record deal. The eventual popularity
of JBJ made it possible for Shulman to actually become the president of
the record label (which label escapes me at the moment).

Ray Shulman (bass) became a producer who has worked with acts
    such as the Sugar Cubes.

Kerri Minnear (keys) joined a Christian commune, and I don't think
he is performing outside of that context.

John Weathers (drums) still tours as a hired gun with various acts.

And Gary Green seems to have evaporated nicely.

Thanks for the reply Brian. G.G. sure did a fine
job of composing some rather interesting tunes. A friend
of mine saw them, late 70's I believe, headlining the good
ol' Orpheum in Boston, MA. According to him, they did a
remarkable job delivering their music live, especially
    the voice deliverance.

It's on "Totally 80's", a 2-CD collection possibly not sold
in stores. I got it for Christmas last year from my neigh-
