| This week's issue of the Phoenix has a nice review of the new SRV
album. They compare it (favorably) to other posthomous albums from
Hendrix, etc.
The current Phoenix issue also has a "top-100 rock albums list" (some
of which is good and some of which is way off-base - just like any such
list), a Freddie Mercury obit, a review of the King Crimson boxed set
and lots of other music stuff.
I picked up the Phoenix while in Boston yesterday (I was trying to find
out where chefs Julia Child, Jaques Pepin and Marie Esposito were holding
their book signing and cullinary workshops - the answer was at 808 Comm
Ave near BU). I was really psyched to see a Phoenix issue so jam-packed
with music goodies too!

What a terrible loss. Have you seen the "Live at the El Macombo"
video? It's awesome. Stevie just starts out whaling and never
lets up the whole show.... some really amazing stuff, including
playing his guitar behind his back showing off etc...
Has anyone heard the new live CD? A friend panned it but then
I heard a cut on the radio and thought it was pretty good.,
I think it's some early recordings...

I haven't heard the new CD yet, but there are a few words about it in
the current Musician, which claims that it's an old recording from long before
he was known much outside Austin. This recording was made before he added the
bass player who later played on the Double Trouble records (I forget his name).
Musician says that the disk contains some fine moments but also shows how far
Stevie would yet improve in becoming the giant he did.

89.19 | "In The Beginning" may not neccessarily be best for beginners | CGVAX2::PAGE | One World Is Enough For All Of Us | Tue Dec 08 1992 12:41 | 21 |

The new Stevie Ray Vaughan disk "In The Beginning" is indeed a
very early recording... Double Trouble had just trimmed down to a
3 piece, Tommy Shannon (from Johnny Winter's early band) was not yet
playing bass, and he was calling himself "Stevie Vaughan"-- hadn't
added the "Ray" yet.
It's a decent disk, but its worth is in its historical value more
than anything else; it shows a really talented young guitarist just
beginning to break out, both in his talent & success.
I wouldn't recommend it to any novice SRV fans; they'd be better
served by "Couldn't Stand The Weather" or "In Step". The previous
posthumous release, "The Sky Is Crying", is a terrific disk for both
the new Stevie Ray listener and the long-time fan looking for some
further insight into Stevie Ray's playing.

It was the Stevie Wonder song. I remember reading an interview with Beck
years ago where he claimed that Stevie Wonder had given him the song, but
later decided to record it himself. Beck seemed somewhat miffed about it.

'ain't superstitious' is a, i think, a blues standard

The bottom line is that the only known cut in print (by SRV) is on
the "LIVE" album/tape/CD. I agree that the "video" sounded like a
studio version, but I also have never found it except on the LIVE album.
I'd LOVE to cover that tune in the band that I'm in....

Just to beat this absolutely to death, Wonder appologized to Beck
about recording 'Superstition' even though he said he wouldn't. With that
he gave Beck "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" which Beck recorded as an
instrumental on "Blow By Blow". Stevie has never recorded it to my knowledge,
