86.0. "Mozart - Musician or Mathematician?" by CRISPY::GERRYT () Thu Dec 05 1991 07:52

    I was just thinking that today is the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death.
    I believe he is generally regarded as a genius.

    As there seems to be such a close link between music and mathematics,
    I was wondering.... if he were alive today, would he have been a musician
    or a Computer Wizz? (maybe applying it to designing synths like Dr Moog?)

    What do YOU think?

    With his alleged lifestyle, there is no doubt in my mind. He would be
    a musician.  :^)

    	oh i dunno, K.C. - you have an image of the modern computer weenie.
    Your 60's & 70's weenie would provide a nice playground for Wolfgang.
    I think Karl hit it pretty good - but i don't think he'd ever find the
    need to enter a sequence via step-time ^8.

    Musician, definitely.

    Listen to the C Minor Mass, which is the only work not commissioned;
    he wrote it as thanksgiving for his upcoming marriage to Constanze.
    It's magnificent.

    Can you imagine him (or anyone!) writing an equation or program to
    express the same feelings?

    Musician!

There's nothing so helpless as a dead public figure. Everyone "owns" you, and
is free to predict what you would or wouldn't do, think, etcetera. Sigh- such is
fleeting fame... At least Wolfgang doesn't get resurrected in spirit for every
national election, as do some poor wraiths.

I personally think a fundamental characteristic of genius is a total disregard
for categorization of itself. It follows, then, that predicting whether he'd be
a musician, mathematician, or plain old horny dude makes no sense from my point
of view.

If I *had* to pick a label for this fine fellow, regardless of the century, I'd
try to include as many of his characteristics as possible in it- say, something
like "irrepressible magicfingers party dweeb?"

    re .6 - i tried to make that point - i could definitely see him make
    use of sequencing software to generate scores, from live performance
    recorded from the keyboard. But that's just my own preference - i find
    sequencing more like work than the normal response i get from playing
    music - including practice.
