I really enjoyed the show at the Orpheum on Wednesday night, although
the crowd seemed a bit underenthusiastic. Maybe they were hoping to
hear "Space Odyssey" as an encore?
Lead guitarist Reeves Gabrels put on an inspired performance... and I
don't think I've ever seen so many stomp boxes and pedals on the floor
in front of anybody ever before! One highlight of the show was when
all the lights in the theater were darkened and Gabrels donned a
strap-on headlight (literally) as he marched around the stage looking
left and right while cranking out a screaming lead.
Rhythm section Tony and Hunt Sales (who, as you may know, are the sons
of TV superstar Soupy!) work perfectly together and with the rest of the
band for an utterly professional performance. Drummer Hunt also has a
nice singing voice and took the spotlight a few times. A very
competent rhythm guitarist joined the band for the show.
Bowie was in fine voice, looking healthy and fit. He also did a
creditable job on a few tunes playing a variety of saxaphones.
Regarding the new album: I would say it borders on brilliant. It
maintains the tremendous energy of the first album while taking the
quality of the material up a big step. I think some of the songs rival
Bowie's best work.... notably "Goodbye, Mr. Ed."

I saw the concert too and thought they gave a great performance. The
concert was what I expected it to be.
I agree with (hertzberg):
Reeves is an excellent lead guitarist. I heard a rumor that Reeves is
leaving Tin Machine - is this true?
Hunt Sales did an outstanding job singing "I'm Sorry" and "Stateside".
Bowie sounded great and looked great. In an interview, Reeves was
teasing Bowie about his newly pierced ear.
Regarding the new album: This is an excellent album. If you don't
have it, its really worth buying. My favorite songs are "You Belong in
Rock'n'Roll" and "Stateside".

As far as guitar playing goes, I'm not much interested in heavy whammy bar use (Adrian Belew excepted, of course), or pyrotechnics. But I saw Tin Machine on SNL, and was extremely impressed by what I saw this guy Gabrels doing. Who did he play with before Tin Machine? Mike | |||||

The new rhythm guitarist is Boston local Eric Shermerhorn,
formerly of Adventure Set, who were finalists is one of the
very early WBCN rumbles and lost to Down Avenue. From what
I've heard, Eric is on for the whole tour; not sure if he's
going to become a permanent member.
Reeves has (had?) a local band, The Atom Said. I believe he
was also in one of the later incarnations of another well known
Boston band, The Dark. Interestingly, The Dark were also BCN
rumble finalists, I think maybe the first one, losing to
Someone and the Somebodies, but Reeves wasn't with the
band at that time.
