    personally, is opening up for Tull....me and my concert pal are going,
    we're all fired up ,as we have'nt seen the band since '77 in
    Providence.....what a memory (i think!)....any other DEC's going????

                 Not so good news on the TULL front,Saw the concert on
    Thursday in Providence it was excellent,the next night in Portland
    Ian had major voice problems on a few songs.He thanked the audience for
    their patience and he seemed very down.He dedicated a song to both
    Freddy Mercury and Frank Zappa who are both dying one of aids and the
    other of prostate cancer,he seemed quite shookup.Last word I heard 
    was they were going to try there dates in New York and Syracuse on
    11/10 and 11/11 and see if his voice improves.If not there is talk
    about canceling the tour.

    Off the subject...but I had heard *rumors* about F. Mercury having
    AIDS, has this been actually confirmed?

               GOOD NEWS ON THE TULL FRONT
     Ian is feeling better and the last two concerts have gone over well.
    Being the true professional he is the show must go on!
    Anyone going to the Centrum show should be familiar with Catfish
    Rising, theres some great music from it along with assorted classics
    and of course some surprises.The shape Ian is in is very impressive,
    and the music sounded awesome the shows I have seen.Lots of flute, great 
    bass and electric guitar work and some super drum and keyboard work.I
    don't think anyone with tickets for Saturdays show at the Centrum will 
    be dissapointed.
    

	Greetings Tull Fans!

	I just found out today that Tull will be in Atlanta on Dec 1.  I called
	a friend in western NY to see if he could make it down and he told me
	he had just gotten tickets to see the band in Pittsburgh on 11/20 but
	wouldn't be able to make it down this far.

	He has been trying to find out what cities and when they're scheduled
	for this tour.  Does anyone have this information or know of a good
	source for getting it?

    Well, the Tull show at the Centrum was excellent in my view (never
    having seen them before). You could tell Ian was pacing himself with
    his voice a bit but it held up pretty well. The song selection and
    musicianship was terrific. The Boston Globe gave them a good review
    (the headline was "Tull: They've Lost Some Hair, But Not Their Edge").
    
    The warmup, Chrissie Steele was god-awful. She's a poor imitation of
    Alannah Myles (who isn't bad in my opinion for that genre of music) and
    their guitarist was all flash and no substance (a Steve Vai wannabe). 
    Hopefully he learns something from 45-year-old Martin Barre.

                   I must agree the TULL show was excellant! Ian mentioned
    to me backstage that the Worcester crowd was and always has been one
    of the bands favorites to entertain." So understanding and apreciative 
    of the music.We also was led by Ian backstage in a rousing happy
    birthday for Martin as the clock struck twelve.Martin is definitely one 
    of the steadiest guitar players in the rock world and just recently he
    has begun to receive long overdue recognition.I thought the music
    throughout the concert was outstanding and Ians conditioning is truly
    amazing.I always feel a little down when the New England portion of the
    tour is over despite having seen them four times this year.Hopefully it
    won't be to long before they return to the states again, not the usual
    two year hiatus.

	Glad to hear that Ian is feeling better and that the concerts are
	going well.  Just bought Catfish Rising and looking forward to the
	show in Atlanta!

	I did call Chrysalis (see 49.8) and the woman I spoke with really
	made me feel like I was wasting her time.  I mentioned to a friend
	of mine, who had also called her, that I thought she was inconsiderate
	and he said "you're being kind, she was a c*nt!".  You would think
	that Chrysalis would be happy to give out concert information as part
	of the promotion of their artists' recordings!

	Anyway, all I know is that Tull will be playing:

		11/20 Pittsburgh (tonight)
		11/22 Cleveland
		12/01 Atlanta

	I would be curious to know where they're playing between 11/22 and 12/1
	and even beyond that but all the Chrys. rep. only wanted to give out
	the sched. for specified cities!  What a pain in the neck!

	So, does anyone else have information on the tour schedule?

	As usual, the Jethro Tull concert was excellent!  They played a
	good mix of old and new songs with a pretty thorough coverage of
	the newest numbers from CATFISH RISING.  I've heard Ian say in an
	interview something to the affect that it was his impression that
	anthing more than 2 hours of listening to one band is too much.  I
	don't agree and, even though he tries to play a lot of the old with
	the new, there is so much more I would be anxious to listen to!

	Ian's voice was not up to hitting the higher notes (it has been that
	way for a few years now) but he improvised quite successfully.

	I've been an avid fan of Jethro Tull since 1969 and seen them on most
	of their US tours and there have been some fantastic concerts!  Most
	of the time I've attended these concerts with very special friends and
	we've always been "feeling pretty good" by the start of the concert,
	if you know what I mean.  I always believed that the music was as good
	as it seemed to be but could it have possibly been THAT GOOD?  Or was
	it that being with friends and being in such a good "mood" that it all
	seemed to be much better than it was?

	Well, I attended this latest concert by myself, sat in the last row in
	the highest balcony.  I was 100% straight (they were selling beer but
	I had a 2 1/2 hr ride home from Atlanta after the concert and beer
	tends to make me sleepy).  I was surrounded by folks who belonged in a
	tavern where they wouldn't have had to pay such an expensive "cover
	charge", the beer would have been cheaper and their LOUD talking
	wouldn't have been such a bother to other patrons.  There was a guy
	sitting next to me who thought the band needed some help on percussion.
	Despite my non-altered state of mind, my distance from the stage, the
	numerous distractions all around me (and an unusual amount of traffic
	on stage due to the sound/stage crew working on faulty wiring), the
	quality of the music and showmanship of the band was excellent and
	"blew it all away"!

                       To all TULL fans they will be playing the Orpheum
    Theater Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd.This tour will only
    be in six select U.S. cities and last from 10/2 till 10/17.Of course
    with the small venue tickets will be at A premium and anything I hear
    will be printed in the notes file.

    It looks like there hasn't been a discussion of
    _Catfish Rising_ here yet...  What songs do
    people like? dislike? 
    
    I'd say "Rocks on the Road," "White Innocence,"
    and "Gold Tip Boots, Black Jacket and Tie"
    are some of the best, but basically I like all
    the songs.  The only complaint I have is that
    a few of the songs (e.g. "This Is Not Love")
    are somewhat generic rock, without a disctinctive
    "Tull" flavor to them.  That's only a couple
    of the songs, though.
    
    Any other comments?

                      My opinion is that it's an excellent album as usual.
    My personal favorite live was White Innocence,also Rocks on the Road is
    another Tull classic. It's a shame because of commercialism unless you
    bought the album or saw them live you will never hear these songs.
    Because its beyond radio to play anything more then 5 or 6 minutes
    long.As with all TULL for myself its great reading beyond just the
    lyrics as to what Ian is saying.After many times talking with Ian he is
    so intelligent,it amazes me to watch him go wild on stage for two hours
    and then talk like a professor backstage an hour later.

	Any more information available on Tull's fall tour?  When do you suppose
	tickets will go on sale for the Orpheum (in Boston, right?) shows?
	Any idea of the identity of the 6 select cities?

                  No word on tickets yet,I will reply with any news I hear.
    The six cities I heard were Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Denver,
    Los Angeles and San Diego.I believe that is the orders of shows
    too.If I hear of any changes I will certainly keep the music notes file
    updated.

    Coming in to the office this morning, I got passed by a Saab 900 Turbo

    	I really like "Catfish Rising", I think it's up there with
    the best they have done. The CD5 "Rocks on the Road" is a must
    also or the rare Mini-Box of "Rocks on the Road". These have
    alternate takes + unreleased & live stuff, I have both, highly

      Well,  I have been waiting for something new for quite a while. I
    thought someone here said that the next release was going to be an
    accoustic thing, which could be really good. Other than that I haven't
    heard anything at all. As long as its not another Heavy Metal album
    I'm sure I'll like it. 8^))))).

    That's what's been said in the rumor-mill.  I'm not sure if Ian has
    confirmed if this is definite or not.  Can anyone confirm?

    I basically agree.  When someone asks me what my favorite Tull album(s)
    is/are I usually try and turn it around and tell them my *least*
    favorite:  _Under Wraps_ and _Rock Island_.  _Crest Of A Knave_, the
    album that won the "Hard Rock/Heavy Metal" Grammy is IMHO better than
    Rock Island, but can't compete with _Thick As A Brick_, _Minstrel In
    the Gallery_, _Stand Up_, ...

	Tull fans,

	I'm mostly a read only noter but when it comes to Tull it's hard to
	be quiet for long.  I had borrowed the 3 CD 20 Years Of Tull from
	my friend Charles Moss but since he is leaving SC to return to MA I
	had to return them - but before doing so I taped them.  So having
	listened to Tull this past weekend and since I will soon not be able
	to enjoy access to the DEC Notes Conferences (once GSO is no longer
	part of DEC) - I'm ready to talk "Tull".

	
	I have always been partial to the older Tull "albums" but probably
	for nostalgic reasons than anything else but would be very hard pressed
	to pick a favorite.  I haven't really gotten into ROCK ISLAND - perhaps
	I haven't listened to it enough.  I listened to it in the car when I
	went to the concert in Atlanta this past fall and I liked it OK but it
	is not an album I have "yearned" to listen to.

	THIS WAS, BENEFIT & STAND UP I always enjoyed.  The 20 Years video has
	some footage of Ian in the early days playing harmonica and the blues
	which was (IMO) great.  On the 20 Year CD set there are some old
	numbers (ie Stormy Monday Blues) which I was glad to hear.  I realize
	that Ian's music wasn't as sophisticated or experienced then but it
	still sounds great to me.

	I think I first heard Tull at a friends in 69 and when we went to a
	festival at Newport RI the week before Woodstock (didn't make that)
	I remember hearing Tull's music "floating over the hill".  Our tickets
	were for the next night when Led Zepplin, Johnny Winter, BB King and
	I don't remember who else (David Peel & The Lower East Side were
	outside the gate singing "Up Against The Wall Mother F***er") performed
	and it was quite a concert.  I was new to all of this music and found
	it all very exciting.  The first time I actually saw Tull perform was
	when I was in Cal (with Navy) in '70, I believe.  I remember being very
	tired and barely able to stay awake for the concert but recall the
	opening group, It's A Beautiful Day, singing WHITE BIRD and I remember
	Ian singing SOSSITY - I always enjoy hearing that one.  The next time
	I saw them was in Hampton Beach, NH ('71?) and YES opened for them!

	The first album that took me a more than one listen to get into was
	Passion Play but the more I listened the more I liked and then seeing
	them do it in concert put the icing on it.  I don't listen to it very
	often but I think it's got some incredible music on it.

	So, This Was, Benefit, Stand Up, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick, Passion
	Play were albums I "grew up" with and listened to quite a bit.  My
	memory and knowledge of the order in which the later albums were
	released is not so accurate.

	Minstrel In The Gallery and War Child were albums I liked but didn't
	listen to them as extensively as the others.  I have heard Too Old To
	Rock 'n Roll but probably not more than a few times - don't know why.
	I thought Ian' sax playing was great and was dissappointed that he
	didn't play it on later albums.  I always thought of Living In The
	Past as a "best of" album though I know otherwise but am still not
	familiar with that one - don't own it.

	When I got married in '77 and we got a stereo I actually started a
	"record" collection (I had always listened to my friend's music or
	bought the albums and left them with my friends).  Songs From The
	Wood and Heavy Horses got a lot of playing time!  Moths is still one
	of my favorites - in fact I listened to it a number of times on the
	way in this morning.  Since my new stereo had a built in 8 track I
	was able to record Bursting Out (live concert recording) when the
	local radio station had it on one night.  I also taped Storm Watch
	off a friends album on my 8 track.  I loved both of them but for some
	reason I don't remember listening to Storm Watch that much.

	Then there was "A" I believe but I am really unfamiliar with that one.

	The Broadsword and Beastie (hmmmm, what is the exact name?) album is
	another great one.  Despite all of the other great albums by Tull I
	sometimes find myself thinking that I like this one the best. 
	Broadsword, Beastie, The Clasp (my memory is failing me) and the one
	where they are "caught up in a red condition" - definitely one of my
	favorites.

	After hearing a cut from Under Wraps on a radio station in Burlington,
	VT when up there on a business trip I found out there had been a solo
	album as well.  I loved both of these also.  And then there was the
	Classical Tull.  I couldn't believe it!  We had always said that Ian's
	music would sound so great if played by a full orchestra.  What a
	wonderful album!

	Crest Of A Knave took some getting used to but I came to enjoy that one
	quite a bit - especially after the concert.  Rock Island, like I said,
	I haven't fully digested.  Catfish Rising is another I haven't listened
	to enough but do enjoy it - just not on the top of my list at this
	time.

	I'm neither a critic nor am I very knowlegeable about music but I know
	what I like and I love the music of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull!

	I've got a story to tell about a painting but I've got to get back to
	work now.  Maybe tomorrow at lunchtime I'll have an opportunity.

	Well, you (QUIVER::MILLER) asked for some discussion - hope I didn't
	overdo it.  I've got a truckload of fond memories associated with
	Jethro Tull but it is so hard to put it all into words.  I was so
	glad to see that Brian Connal had started the Tull Topic in the Music
	conference.

	In parting I will have to say that I NEVER thought of Jethro Tull as
	a Heavy Metal group but if some of their songs have ventured into the
	realm of "heavy metal" then at least it was recognized as the "best".

	I honestly don't know much about Heavy Metal music so I wouldn't think
	of putting it down but I guess I think of it as mostly noise (even
	though I'm sure there is some merit to it - just hard to listen to
	long enough to find it).  I once went to a Blue Oyster Cult concert to
	try and broaden my horizon.  Every once in a while they would start to
	play something I could make out and start to enjoy and before I knew it
	there was all this noise drowing out what I'd been listening to!  All
	I got out of the experience was a very bad headache!

	The music of Ian Anderson and friends is so fantastic and then on top
	of that you've got Ian's lyrics!  And then you've got the concerts
	which, although they are not quite as exciting as they were "in the
	past", they are still excellent.

    Lost His Spectacles" is on the album?  I've heard stories about
    them acting it out or showing a short movie... what did they do

	Yes, they did "act out" the Hare Who Lost His Spectacle, somewhat.
	I don't remember any movie but then again ...  That was sometime around
	10 years ago but I think someone wore a rabbit's outfit and the bass
	player did the narative (I'm sorry but although I've been a fan of
	Tull for years I still can't get all of the names right - besides
	Ian's and Martin's).  I think Ian used this part of the concert to
	take a break - at least for part of it.  He used to do a lot more
	running around in those days.

	In one of the concerts, and it might have been the Passion Play, he
	(the bass player) dressed in black & white stripes and his bass was
	also painted with stripes and I remember a zebra coming on stage in
	pursuit of him.

	As the lights slowly dimmed at the beginning of the concert a small
	circle of light sychronized with the pulsing heartbeat-sound that
	starts the "play" was displayed (can't remember if there was a screen
	or if it was displayed against a curtain or what).  It continued to
	pulse and grow teasingly, exciting the crowd with anticipation.  It
	was great!

	I'm sorry I can't remember more details.  Any Augusta Maine readers
	out there?  Denny Drapeau (of ASO) was there and perhaps his memory
	could do a better job of recalling the events of that concert.

	I didn't know about the zebra (I wish I could have seen that!
    Sounds great!), but there is a picture or two of the black and white
    striped outfit and bass in the booklet for 20 Years, for those of us
    who bought the box set....

    She looks across the room to a mirror, runs across the room and leaps
    through the mirror as the band opens the show. It was a great show, I

    Yep....I saw Passion Play at the Gardens in Boston in the
    year..........1975!  Yikes.  I have pictures, we were
    6 rows back, center.  Ian made lots of eye contact with
    the crowd, I'll never forget that concert.
    
    Right....louder and and louder, that Ballerina was dead
    at first, or so I thought.  She comes to life and runs
    towards the audience, Ian jumps through the screen.
    
    Best show I've ever seen and probably ever will.

	I saw the Passion Play tour in Boston Garden in late September of '73 
They did two shows on consecutive nights which were billed as their "farewell 
shows".  Apparently Ian Anderson had told the press that he was retiring from 
the road and the local media made quite a big deal of it being their final
performances.

	In any case, they used a large rear projection screen to show a film of
"the hare that lost his spectacles" which as I recall was accompanied by a 
canned playback, but not the one from the record.

	It was a fabulous show, and pretty long as I recall. They did all of
Passion Play and all of Thick As A Brick.  They also did quite a bit
of Aqualung, which was a pretty recent album at the time.

	The ballerina was on the back cover of the album I think, and I do 
dimly remember the described opening.  I don't remember anything involving 
a zebra or stripes, but it was, after all, a long time ago.  I do remember 
hearing the hearbeat and seeing a pink pulsing light (i think) before the 
opening of the show.  I don't remember how the heartbeat interplayed with the
balerina.

	Also, an interesting device they used was to place a small white
desk telephone on a small foot stool at the front of the stage in left center.
Occasionally during the show, all the music would stop and the pohone would ring,
then the music would continue.  As the last number ended ("Wind Up" from 
Aqualung) the phone rings again.  This time Anderson picks it up talks silently
into it for a moment while theatrically nodding his head, then turns to the 
audience, holds out the phone, and says: "It's for you" as the lights go down 
and the show ends.  Corny, but it was fun.

	Also, I recall that Anderson was VERY theatrical with over acted facial
expression and motion, much like a player in mideval theatre.  He also did 
very impressive ballet leaps through smoke with lots of impromptu dance steps
as he played a wired flute.  He wore dark leotards and a purple chastity belt as 
I recall.  Great fun for all.

    Are any of the older Tull concerts preserved on video for those of us
    that didn't know about Tull at the time and/or were too young to see
    them in the early to mid 70s ???
    
    I know about Slipstream, a video released after the _A_ tour, with some
    concert footage, some MTV-style videos, other stuff loosely connected
    in a very vague storyline of Ian_as_Aqualung_the_bum_sneaks_into_a_
    concert_of_Jethro_Tull_because_he's_being_chased_by_the_big_inflated_
    ball_things_Ian_uses_at_the_end_of_concerts_etc_etc_etc...
    
    What else is available on video (either official or bootleg) ???

    The only other video I know of commercially available in the US is the
    20th Anniversary video.  This includes early footage of a concert in
    STockholm in 1969, so somewhere that film/videotape must exist.
    
    About 5 years ago MTV ran a series called "Rock Influences" and devoted
    one to Jethro Tull and the bands they influenced.  The live footage
    appears to be from the Slipstream video.
    
    They were on the German TV show Beat Club around 1969-70.  USA network
    used to show Beat Club clips, VH1 still shows some occasinally.  It may
    be on one of MTV's compilation tapes of 60/70's bands.

                 I also remember the Passion Play concert as one of my all
    time favorites.The first time I saw the band was at Boston Garden in
    1972 for the Thick as a Brick concert.I was fourteen and went with my
    older brother,we had lousy seats,but it was just the most incredible
    show.I remember them opening with Thick as a Brick and jamming for
    about forty five minutes and at the end a sweating and exhausted Ian
    saying "and now for our next song " just as if they had played a three
    minute single.The show was excellent throughout despite the lousy
    seats.After that I was hooked I have seen every show since 72 and seen
    the band fifty one times since that first one.I usually average seeing
    them three to five times every tour,traveling throughout New England
    and New York every tour.I have seen many concerts besides TULL but none
    of them for myself compare to seeing Jethro Tull.I have been fortunate
    that my younger brother is a freelance music critic and has done a lot
    of work with Crysalis.Through him I have become quite friendly with the
    band the last eleven years.He has interviewed Ian fifteen times and I
    always conveniently tag along,also he has done interviews with Martin
    and Dave Pegg.The whole band is great but my personal favorite is
    Martin Barre he is just a great guy and such a terrific and underated
    guitar player.Ian is so fond of Martin that I have heard him say
    numerous times that if Martin ever left the band Jethro Tull stops
    that day.As for Ian he is the master he controls everything TULL,it
    always amazes me how he can be the mad captain hook on stage then a
    half hour later backstage its like talking to a professor.I could
    talk and write about TULL all day,Ijust wanted to share a few of my

    Feel free to share a few more, as far as I'm concerned!  I'd love to
    hear anything particularly memorable from those many concerts you've
    seen, and the backstage interviews and discussions.  Funny things they
    said or did on stage or behind stage, etc etc....
    
    Another area of discussion that I'd like to suggest is what you feel is
    the most underrated Tull album.  My nomination is _Minstrel In The
    Gallery_.  The music and lyrics are as powerful as TAAB or Aqualung,
    and yet it tends to get overlooked for some reason.  Also, in the
    Catfish Rising tour they didn't play anything from this album, except
    for the teaser of the title track at the very beginning of the concert. 
    (yes, I know, they also didn't play anything from Songs From The Wood

               As far as underated albums go my pick would be Songs from
    the wood.
               Last time I saw TULL,we were backstage at the Worcester
    Centrum November 91.Ian all concert had made references to Martins
    birthday at midnight and he would then turn 45.About thirty five
    critics,fans and radio contest winners were waiting for the band to
    come into the room when suddenly Ian peeks around the door with his
    wild eyes and whispers someones 45 years old as of this minute and he
    and the other band members led us into a loud rendition of happy
    birthday to Martin.Then a cake and beer were wheeled out for all.
    
               Another story from the Centrum,this time in 87 during the
    Grammy winning Crest of a Knave tour.We were backstage before the
    concert when the band arrived from the airport we saw all of them
    except Ian.Martin who my brother was interviewing for a magazine and
    Dave Pegg came over to talk to us.The first thing Dave says to us is
    don't expect much of a show tonight as Ian is sick with the flu he
    picked up in Montreal.Ian went right to the hotel he was feeling so
    lousy.Now I had about forty friends from Dec seeing TULL for the first
    time and had heard from me how awesome they are live.So we do the
    interview with Martin and we leave backstage about 7:30 not knowing
    what to expect.The lights go down at 8:55 the crowd goes wild and all
    eyes are riveted to the stage,all of a sudden Ian appears at the other
    end of the Centrum walking to the middle and opens up with Songs From
    The Woods.The band proceeded to put on an outstanding show,despite Ian
    being under the weather.He certainly displayed once again his
    professionalism despite being sick.The reviews from my friends were
    great and they are now true TULL fans and most now go back every TULL
    tour.
    
    

    It's great to see so many other Deccies enjoy Tull as much as I.  I got
    hooked on Tull at a very young age(6 or 7!).  I have an older brother
    who was 15 or 16 when Aqualung came out.  I used to go down in the
    basement of my parents house and listen to that album over and over
    with my then teenage brother.  I think you could read the newspaper
    through that album it was played so much.  My brother, the lucky stiff,
    saw Tull at that time (69'?) at St. Anselms College in Goffstown, N.H.
    which is about 200 yds. from my parents.  He got to stand right at the
    stage.  I'm not sure if Martin had joined the band yet.  My brother
    said Clive Bunker (drums) was incredible and so was Ian which goes
    without saying.  I've only seen Tull twice myself, the Under Wraps tour
    and the Crest of a Knave tour.  Both times were excellent.  I believe
    is the type of band that is better live than on vinyl.  Speaking of
    vinyl,  anything new due out?

    The Ian Anderson solo album "Walk Into Light" is, as Ian himself has
    described it, really a collaboration between Ian and Peter-John
    Vettese.  The two of them played or programmed all of the parts, mostly
    electronic keyboards and drum machines.  I like the album in general,
    but don't think could possibly compare to my favorite Tull albums, like
    TAAB, MitG, SU, LitP,SftW, HH......  Perhaps WitL could be compared to
    Under Wraps or A if anything...

    I actually have Ian's solo and like it.  I was wondering what fellow
    Tullsters thought about it.  It is quite different from the standard
    Tull fare.  The recording is excellent as well

	Chip - yes, I enjoy the Walk Through Light album very much.  It
	probably wouldn't be considered one of his "classics" but that's
	only for discussion - it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of
	the music.  I've heard one of the songs from that album (I'm terrible
	at remembering names of songs - I really don't pay much attention to
	titles unless the song is fantastic and I can't help but remember it)
	during the presentation of NBA games on TV.  Anyone else notice that?
	And I'm not talking about the beer (Miller?) commercials with
	Locomotive Breath - I couldn't believe it when I first heard it!
	Hey Brian C., what does Ian feel about his songs being used in
	commercials?

	Brian M. - thanks for entering the info about the tickets going on sale
	tomorrow.  Where will they be playing in Boston?  I sure wish I could
	be up there to see them but don't see it happening.  I'll be sure to
	pass the info to those I think would be interested and who could make
	it.


	The next time you speak with Ian, Brian C., I would appreciate it if
	you could ask him about a painting he was given back in 1972.  Here
	is the story of that painting.

	Russ Carlson had become an avid fan of Tull after seeing the Aqualung
	concert in Portland ME (late 1971 - early 72).  He also got into
	painting and decided to make a copy of the Aqualung album for another
	friend of ours, Dennis Drapeau (DEC-ASO).  When Russ found out Tull
	was going to be in Bangor, Maine (Thick As A Brick tour) he asked
	Dennis if he could give the painting to Ian and he would make another
	for Dennis (the painting was beautiful!).  Dennis said OK and Russ
	proceeded to build a shipping crate for the painting and he and another
	friend, Leon, drove to Bangor (the day before the concert, I believe)
	to try to locate the band. They tried the airport, the hotels ... and
	finally found them at the auditorium rehearsing.

	They got inside and approached the stage.  Leon called out to Ian, as
	Russ was probably too overwhelmed to speak at this point.  Ian asked
	if they were with the FBI.  Leon said "no" and then said "Ian, this
	is Russ.  Take it Russ".  Russ found his voice and said "I have a
	picture for you".  Ian said something to the effect that he wasn't
	interested in buying anything.  Russ said "No, I'd like to give you
	a painting" (he might have told him it was of Aqualung).  Anyway, he
	went outside with them to see what it was they had.  They said he
	seemed so much smaller than they had expected and even weak.  They
	said he seemed to have hardly enough strength to open the door.  When
	they got to the car Russ took out the crate and pulled out the painting
	of Aqualung and showed it to Ian.  I don't know exactly what Ian's
	response was but he thanked him and asked if they would like some
	tickets to the concert.  Russ had already bought (the day they went on
	sale) a row full (4th row) so didn't need them.  

	The night of the concert we went to where our seats were supposed to
	be (a man at the auditorium had shown Russ where they were when he
	bought them).  Our seats were occupied and the folks sitting there
	would not show us their tickets!  Well, talk about a string so tight
	it was on the verge of snapping!  Russ got an usher and we discovered
	that Russ had been shown the wrong seats the day he purchased them - 
	ours were further down the row.

	We kept telling Russ during the concert "he's going to bring the
	painting out now and call you up onstage" which, of course, he didn't
	but boy was Russ suffering some anxiety!

	So, Brian, if you would ask Ian if he remembers receiving a painting
	of Aqualung from a fan when he played in Bangor ME back in October of
	1972, I would sure appreciate it.  We often wondered what happened to
	that painting.  Perhaps he gave it to a friend, a roadie or maybe it is
	hanging somewhere in his home?  Russ did paint another Aqualung and
	Dennis had it hanging in his parent's home for a while.  I remember
	hearing that they really loved it and I'm not sure if he ever was
	able to convince them to let him have it back.


	Hope I didn't bore you all with the story.  I am also hoping that
	there will be more information on the upcoming Tull concerts before
	too long.  Since the GSO facility has been sold and we will soon (8/25
	will be our last day) no longer be DEC employees, we will not have
	access to this wonderful Notes Conference (or any other, ie CELTICS).
	We might be able to send mail for a while so I'm thinking of having
	someone run a notes extract procedure on a daily or weekly basis and
	mail me new notes.

    I would recommend it, even though I haven't actually bought it myself
    (I heard it only recently from a friend's copy, copied it on tape so I
    can listen to it until I find it in a store and buy it for myself...)
    
    The name of the CD is _A Classic Case:  The London Symphony Orchestra
    plays the music of Jethro Tull_
    
    Ian Anderson, as well as Martin, D. Pegg, and Peter-John Vettese
    contributed to the performances, and the orchestral arrangements were
    done by the one and only David Palmer.

                            I heard some of the new TULL album due out in
    mid September last night.Ian sent my brother a demo tape so he could
    listen to it before he interviews him by phone next week from
    Scotland.Ian also requested that he doesnt review it or let any radio
    stations get hold of it,because it isnt quite finalized yet.There is
    a couple new songs and remixes of many old classics and seldom played
    gems.The sound despite being only a demo is superb.Ian plays a mean
    harmonica on some songs and one new song is done in a blues tempo ala
    This Was.Here are some songs to be on it:
                     pussywillow,nursie,lifes a long song,christmas song
    new day yesterday,living in the past,bouree,from a dead beat to an old 
    greaser,rocks on the road and a version of old friend Steve Winwoods
    song John Barleycorn. 
                      I know all of you TULL fans will enjoy it,I will
    post any interesting comments that come out of the interview my brother
    does next week.

                    Yes I do believe there from Europe.I would guess that
    it will be out around then because the tour is only a couple weeks away
    from that date.From a Chrysalis marketing standpoint it would only make
    sense.Along with the U.S. portion of their 92 tour they will also be
    playing all over Canada including some far out places over their.

    Yes, new material would be nice.  However, keep in mind a couple of
    things.  First, Catfish Rising came out less than a year ago, and it's
    been a while since Tull has released new material in successive years
    (Under Wraps, '84; Crest Of A Knave, '87;  Rock Island, '89; Catfish,
    '91).
    
    Second, there is very little "officially released" (non-bootleg) live
    material released.  There were two cuts on Living In The Past, Bursting
    Out (which was cut up in the US CD version) and some of the box set. 
    There was also one non-Chrysalis legally released live CD, from a show
    during the Under Wraps tour, called Live at Hammersmith(London) '84. 
    But considering the number of studio albums, that's not much.  so I'll
    welcome the new release in September very much.
    
    Can't wait for the concert in October!

    What do you mean by this?  "jazzed up"?  I guess you could say that
    Dharma For One was jazzed up between This Was and Living In The Past,
    or Under Wraps#1 or #2 was jazzed up from the other (who knows which
    came first? Sort of like The Beatles' Revolution and Revolution 1).
    
    I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but this all sounds
    so...interesting? exciting?... well, whatever, I'm at least curious,

    up beat fashion,I only heard the tape once and as you must know TULL
    music is hard to absorb just listening to it one time.It sounded very

    Actually, Sweet Dream is one of my *least* favorite Tull songs.  The
    main reason I would be upset if I had the 1-CD Bursting Out is that I
    believe they cut some of Ian's introductions and some of the
    instrumental pieces.
    
    I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of the (UK) 2CD Bursting Out on a
    vacation with my parents to Belgium. :-)

                    My brother talked with Ian last night and he was in
    great spirits,and very informative about TULLS upcoming theater tour
    and future plans.He said the show will start at 8:00 with no back up
    band and "don't be late"! The show will be first a semi acoustic
    performance then an intermission,and the second half will be a harder 
    rock set that in his words will have the Orpheum Theater rocking.
    He expressed a great deal of excitement in playing Boston and reflected
    on when they played the Boston Tea Party in 1969.Ian said a large
    segment of the seventeen song live CD,cassette due in stores either the
    15th or 22nd will be featured.It was recorded through different venues 
    throughout Europe.Also he said there will be many surprises in the
    bands performance.Ian also said it's a thrill to finally play smaller
    venues with much better acoustics then the much larger arenas.
    
                              As for the future 93 should be a big year
    with a possibility of a box set, and a world tour late in the year
    to celebrate the bands 25th year.Ian will be concentrating his efforts 
    quite extensibly on music and leaving his many outside interests
    (farming etc.)to his workers.Which of course is great news for us many
    TULL fans.
                   

    
    	I've seen the new LP/CD advertised in Goldmine, one add
    lists it as "A Little Light Music", $18.00 for LP. The other
    add lists it as "A Little Night Music" , 2LPs, $25.00.
    
    	Ian Anderson should do what Robert Fripp is doing for
    King Crimson, a 4 CD box set of all "Live" material. That
    would be the ultimate 25th anniversary set because Tull is
    one of the best "Live" bands with only one mediocre "Live"

    Seventeen songs sounds pretty good.  Let us know when a firm release
    date is announced!  Also, the plans for '93 sound good too.  Glad to
    hear Tull plans to continue with no end in sight in the near future.
    
    I'll be at the Friday, Oct. 2 show, with enough money for any new
    shirts or programs they might be selling.  The closer it gets the more
    excited I get!  The description you give of how Ian says the show will
    be set up, with first semi-acoustic stuff, then a rocking second set
    sounds great!  Should be fun!

    but not enough. Sound doesn't do much for me either, maybe
    thats why I'm dissapointed. The mix is great sometimes but
    mediocre other times. The drummer totally muddies up the sound.

    The drummer, Dave Mattacks, is from the folk group Fairport Convention,
    as is bassist Dave Pegg and the keyboardist for the Catfish Rising
    tour, Martin Allcock.
    
    I thought the drumming on the Catfish Rising album and the others that
    Doane played on were OK, but nothing compared to Barriemore Barlow(sp?)
    in the days of Thick As A Brick and Minstrel In The Gallery.
    
    As I'm not very familiar with Fairport Convention, I can't say too much
    about Dave Mattacks, and it's hard to get a fair impression from the
    live album.  Let's wait for a new studio album in '93 (hopefully!) and
    see how the drumming on that goes.

    I heard "John Barleycorn" over the weekend and it sounds like JT must
    have listened a lot ot the Traffic version because they cop it totally,
    it's very much *not* like most trad versions or even the Steeleye Span
    one from "Below the Salt". Funny how Ian professes this love of trad
    folk music but his own attempts at it aren't that good.  Here, where he
    has a chance to *interpret* a song in his own way, he does it Steve
    Winwood's way instead...he even cops some of Chris Wood's flute solo!
    
    Mattacks is a great drummer but he's a very *understated* one, which is
    in strong contrast to Tull's usual choice of busy drummers.  He and
    Pegg have been a rhythm section for over 20 years so they can certainly
    cook. To hear them at their best, you'll need to check out some Richard
    Thompson albums, particularly "guitar,vocal" where they do some live
    stuff that is hair-raising, though it's closer to Neil Young and Crazy
    Horse in sound than J.T.

    	The drummers playing I don't have a problem with, it's
    the mix. It sounds like he's in a closet, even his cymbols
    sound bad. The sound of the drums is great on only 1 song.

    teasing bassist Pegg about his fetish for farm animals or Barre about
    his imaginary womanizing while the band is on the tour.Yet the music
    lovers dream filled with flutes,mandolins,harmonicas,glockenspiels and
    acoustic and bass guitars.Highlights abound as Andrsons flute
    mesmerizes,resurrecting such precious gems as Bouree.Then theres the
    irresistable Living in the Past.They even introduce a surprising
    interpretation of Traffics John Barleycorn,where Ian pays homage to
    good friend Stevie Winwood.
    
                              Barres delicate restraint,particularly on the
    delightful One White Duck and A Christmas Song proves his
    versatility.Peggs bassfuels the initially ferocious New Day Yesterday
    which relaxes into a hypnotic bluesy jam with Anderson barking out
    melodic harmonica.
    
                              Theres nothing light about This is not
    Love,where Barre's laser like guitarshot wads of shrapnel around
    Anderson's interspersed flute flirtations.The maestro closes with the
    brilliant classic Bouree followed by a toned down,yet nonetheless
    effective Locomotive Breath.
    
                               The version of the usually stale and boring
    Too Old To Rock and Roll,But Too Young To Die,is played in
    elegant,almost symphonic mode.The band sparkles and their abilities to
    transform such a rock song into a classical gem is truly amazing.
          
                               The disc is sure to delight-not only Tull
    fans but music enthusiasts who've always improperly labeled these
    survivors as a heavy metal outfit like us foolish music critics who
    gave them that infamous Best Heavy Metal Band status two years ago.
    
                                Addtionally,this is an acurate and truly
    introspective work,orchestrated by Anderson,whom Irelands world
    renowned classical flute sensation James Galeway spoke of as an

    	The new CD has some strong points also, I don't hate it
    I just think it should have been better. Ian Andersons voice
    & harmonica playing are great, sounds great also. His flute
    playing is fantastic, sound is absolutely perfect. I'd still
    only give **1/2 maybe *** out of *****.

                  Went to all three nights the shows were tremendous!
    Everyone that I know who went loved it.The radio stations and
    newspapers are all over TULL in a positive way and its great to see,
    I think 93 will be quite a 25th year celebration.

    Yes.  If you bought the program, there's a part in there where they say
    that there has been talk about a full length videotape, new album, and
    a 25 Years collection of old and new material.  Nothing definite, but
    sounds promising.
    
    If anyone wants, I can post the set list from Friday night, written out
    from memory *after* getting home from the show (so I may have some of
    the songs slightly out of order).  However, I'll mention now that it
    was great to hear "My God"(!!!), Beggar's Farm, 
    With You There To Help Me(!!), My Sunday Feeling, Someday The Sun Won't 
    Shine For You, A Song For Jeffrey, in the same concert as Aqualung,
    Rocks On The Road, Farm On The Freeway, Cross-Eyed Mary, Locomotive
    Breath, instrumental stuff, Christmas Song, Thick As A Brick ......
    
    Okay, now I've gone and listed most of the stuff they played.

                                Yes the sets were the same all three
    nights,which didn't bother me at all as I thought it was a great mix.
    The trouble with a band of TULLS stature is they have so much material
    that you never hear everything you want.I thought it was super seeing
    them at a theater instead of a large arena,but I dont believe we will
    see them their again.(you never know with Ian though)Talking to him
    he seemed to love the intimacy too,and he always expresses his
    enjoyment of playing in Boston when in the U.S. 
    

    
    The show in Denver was superb ! They played for at least 2� hours,
    and it was very tight, very friendly and sounded great ! Same set
    list (approximately) as listed earlier.

                        Ian Anderson was on WBCN this morning with Charles
    discussing the oil spill in Scotland.He said the damage was not as
    severe as first feared,and that it was roughly four hundred miles from
    his salmon farms.He was quite disturbed that such a senseless accident
    could occur when it could easily have been avoided.
    
                         Charles asked Ian when we would see the band back
    in the states and he replied "they would be performing on their 25th
    anniversary tour the last week in August in the Boston area".
    
                          I cant wait!

                         Jethro Tull will be live on the tonight show

    Paradise one weekend in early October....

         Just bought the 25 years of TULL box set,its truly an outstanding
    production both musically and artistically.It comes in a fancy cigar
    box with a seal that must be broken to open.When you open the box
    theres a beautiful portrait of the band.Then theres a forty eight page 
    booklet which is truly a work of art.I t contains memorabilia from all
    twenty five years the band has existed,awards they have won and various
    news clippings from all over the world.It's very colorful and the
    designs on each page is really sharp.There is a two page forward from
    Ian which is really well written covering the bands entire existance.
    There is also a review of every TULL album by a well known London music
    critic.There is also agreat deal more within the book that truly
    fascinates any TULL fan.Now for the four discs the sound and quality
    are great the discs itself has a picture of Ian engraved in a goldish
    design with his autograph on it,very sharp.The music has one disc live
    at Carnegie Hall from 1970 a dedication for the Pheonix House for drug
    addicts.It contains mostly songs from Benefit along with an incredible
    version of My God.Ian talks after most songs and the sound is
    surprisingly good for such an old concert.Another disc is Live through
    the years,with live songs throughout their 25 years.Another disc is
    titled Potpourri which has songs from all the years remastered and
    improved,the sound is superb.The last disc is songs through the years
    redone by the current band,also the sound is great.
    
                 It is by far and away the best box set I have seen 
    and a must for any true TULL fan.
    
                 I cant wait for the 25th anniversary tour when it hits New
    England!!
    

    I'm an off-road motorcycle enthusiast as well, and I remember reading
    an article in Dirt Bike magazine about 20 years age featuring Ian
    Anderson and his off road bike hobby.....I don't know much about the
    guy, but he seemed like a fun loving type.

    My brother just gave me the 25 years box set as a birthday gift and
    I didn't (couldn't) open the box yet ;-) It is so beautiful, I don't
    want to ruin it. You have to tear the seal to open the box, how am
    I going to do that ;-?
    
    I already have almost all of the songs on other CDs anyway, maybe I
    will keep it as it is, in mint condition, would it become a collectors'
    item one day ;-?
    
    Just kidding. I will gather my courage and open it up one of these
    days, if only to get to the book inside.

	You may have the songs, but realize that in all cases this release
has Different versions of them. They are either remixes, re-performed by the
current Tull Group, or live cuts. IMHO the Bouree' and Living in the Past
cuts are the best ever. And I'm finally beginiing to enjoy the REALLY old stuff
because these new releases are better.

 	I've been debating whether it's worth while to buy another "opened"
boxed set and place it in storage -- think the value will go up?

    Last night I got rid of the plastic wrap around it. I didn't touch the
    seal though. I am trying to figure out how to slit it open with minimum
    damage.
    
    Once I read something in the CD Review magazine, in the readers' column.
    Someone was saying that he had bought a cd, brought it home and
    when he played it he found out that the music was something other than
    the label. He was asking if he should return it or keep it in case
    it gained some value like the defective coins and stamps. The answer
    from CD Review was: "You should return it because as far as we know
    people don't buy CDs for any reason other than to listen them".

                      Saw Jethro Tull Monday night in Burlington,Vermont.
    The show was truly outstanding,one of their best shows I have seen in
    the last few years.They played for two hours and ten minutes in a 
    very highly energized set.They covered from 1968 to the present in
    spirited fashion, the crowded house was very enthusiastic and left in 
    amazement at how this band keeps improving like a fine wine.One side
    note, while waiting to cross the street after picking up my ticket 
    downtown who pulls beside me but Ian Anderson his wife Shoana and one
    of his children.Realizing he doesn't want to be spotted I just said hi
    quietly talked some small talk and went on my way.The set went like

    They had one more show in Poukeepsie,New York then back to the United
    Kingdom where they will tour later this month into May.This tour was 
    mostly Canada cities,and about eight small venues in the U.S. I would
    guess maybe late summer or the fall hopefully they will tour the US
    major cities.Also I have heard talk of possibly a new studio album
    in the near future.

     This topic has been silent for awhile. I finally found "Nightcap" in
    the CD bin this past weekend. I have been looking for over a year for
    it and wasn't willing to pay major bucks that most places wanted to
    order it for me. I got an import copy from Holland for $24 for the 2
    disk set. It is intresting and enjoyable to listen to. The first disk
    is the first pass at what later became Passion Play. It was recorded
    near Paris and scraped for several reasons (ill health in the band,
    recording problems etc). The second disk are cuts that never made it
    to albums for various reasons. Ian Anderson states in the notes that
    he didn't want to release this because it would appear that the band
    was releasing material to make a buck. All money from the sales go to
    charities listed on the liner notes. A nice gesture.

    I recently saw "Living in the Past" a Worcester area Tull tribute band,
    and I'd recommend them to any Tull fans...quite good, imho...

    Could someone tell us a little more about "Nightcap"?  Or has it

    	of admission just to hear "Cross-Eyed Mary".
    
    	Where'd you see them ... G. Willicker's?  I noticed they played
    	this w'end.  A friend and I saw them a couple months ago at the
    	same place.
    

    Yup, I saw LITP at G Willy's...I usd to gig with the bass player, so
    I'll keep y'all posted about future gigs...

     I found out about the existence of Nightcap in the CD Notesfile. I
    haven't been able to get into it for a long time now. It was released
    in 92 or 93, not on a US label. It may be released someday here but
    for now the only way to get it is on an import label. I could give you
    more facts from the liner notes if you want. It is intresting that some
    of the original Passion Play showed up on War Child. There is a segment
    from this on the 25th boxed set I believe, I'll have to look when I get
    home.
