41.1 | We Can't Dance or jam | WILLEE::OSTIGUY | | Thu Nov 14 1991 12:57 | 46 |
| A friend of mine told me he saw an interview Tuesday night on MTV with
Tony, Phil, and Mike, and he thought they looked very bored, and not at
all enthusiastic about the new album or tour. One of them made a remark
to the effect of "we'll play a lot of songs from the past few albums, a
few more from albums a bit further back, and a medley of some real old
stuff".
well, that's not a surprise, but whomever said it, did so with an
attitude of complete non-interest...I didn't see this, so I'm only
reporting what, or HOW he (my friend) interpreted the interview.
It makes me want to skip the tour, except for the fact that with this
apparent lack of interest, this could be their last tour, and I do want
the opportunity to see Tony Banks play again.
Has anyone picked up the new CD yet ?? I picked it up Tuesday, and have
only given it 1 listen so far. I think that some of it will grow on me
with a few more listenings, but overall, I'm disappointed...this may
change, but I find it a bit uninspiring. I hear "formula" that has been
evident in Phil's solo stuff. I'm Phil Collins, and listen to me
scream !! The same drum sounds, the same keyboard sounds...the same
FORMULA. No instrumental trax, and not until Fading Lights, the last
cut on the album, is there any sort of jamming/soloing. I am a big fan
of Tony Banks' style, but it again is strictly chord-oriented, with the
melody intro line with a "ghost" sounding synth patch. Fading Lights is
the first time I recall ANY keyboard lines played up-tempo, or
resembling an improvised "solo". That particular cut was my favorite on
first listening, there were some other good songs, but overall, I was
disappointed.
I haven't heard "Still Life" Tony's last solo effort, but I've been
told it is reminiscent of "A Trick of the Tail", so I was hoping that
Phil had the "formula" out of him, and that maybe we would have
something here that sounded like earlier albums. I'm NOT expecting
"Supper's Ready" or even "Ripples", but a hint of Wind & Wuthering or
even And Then There Were 3 or Duke...
I'm surprised that I'm being so harsh on some of my musical heroes, but
maybe it's just the first listen, and it will take time. After all,
there is material off Invisible Touch that took me a few years to
appreciate, and HOPEfully I will get to like this too.
just my thoughts....other opinions ??

I got the CD. And it's great! Although some of the songs are
made as 'hit' songs, there is still plenty of good music on
it. I hear moods from '...And Then There Were Three...' on it,
it's far the best since that one. I hate the square-form com-
puter drumming Phil Collins has been doing the last 3-4 al-
bums, now he's playing in his jazzy style again, at least on
parts of it - what IMO puts much more dynamics into the music.
Tony Banks also does some of his, wellknown from the past,
Bach-like buildups, and they even play long solo pieces, ma-
king some of the songs last more than 10 minutes (and a total
of *71* minutes playing time)...
On the negative side: Mike Rutherford's bass is barely audible.
On earlier recordings, I enjoyed his masterful, melodic play-
ing - I really consider him as a virtuoso on the bass; he's in-
credible fast and well-phrased, and seems to find appropriate
and well placed notes for every different song.
But why, oh why doesn't he turn that f*ing thing UP??!! I also
miss Steve Hackett - has always done on each and every recor-
ding since he left.
But - all in all, a good one...

| Bought it last week. I like it very much. It has got a consistant sound
(unlike Duke or Abacab, where one could tell who came in with one song
or another). Surely in some tracks you can find some Rutherford or
Collins sound, but still, it's very much in line with Invisible Touch,
where the guys decided to do something all together, rather than asking
themselves whether one song should go in their solo or their group
albums.
On the bass line: track 2 and 7 are quite good. It's quite audible, and
not too loud ( la bal pop). Actually I like the bass volume when you
notice the bass only when missing. It's how you conceive this
instrument as part of an ensemble.
Collins's way of programming his drum machine is in my view very good
(track 3 and 6), and he doesn't fall into the easy (he did very well on
'In the air tonight' and 'Don't loose my number' on his solo albums).
I liked too the variety of drum sounds across the different tracks.
I don't think we'll ever hear again things like in Wind and Wuthering
or even older recordings. Those musicians tend to evolve along with
their own maturiy, and solo experiences, and sound technology. For
instance, Collins' sound changed much since 'Hello I must be going'. I
can expect the same from the whole band. Different is not necessarely
worse.
There was an interview on french TV of the band. They seemed OK, and
when asked if they would still be around together in ten years time,
then mentionned that ten years ago, they would have answered 'no' to
the same question, and they're still here today. So let's enjoy today
(Deep in the Motherlode ?).

Re .3:
I agree that it's OK for musicians to develop their maturity,
change their sound, style, whatever. But this is not entirely
the case. There is another aspect, which is called: MONEY.
Genesis has developed into a big, big, megabuck money-making
machine. Fortunately, they're still able to make music that
can make people like me (old timers ;^) enjoy it. However, they
lost a lot since their earlier recordings, IMO. One of the rea-
sons is, they are not any more allowed to express themselves as
much as earlier - the big mass, the public, is more focused on
machine-type music, and Genesis has been accepted by them, and
therefore, somehow trapped - I think it's very, very difficult
to step back from this position and once again play the music
you REALLY like...
'We Can't Dance' somehow indicates that they try to make 'real
music' again, but I guess the songs that I feel most attracted
to, are the ones that the public don't like - long, experimen-
ting solo's are not what people like in today's world of Michael
Jackson's, Madonna's, etc...
Btw, I got the new CD with Tony Banks, it's called 'Still' - a
nice one, I think his best so far. I don't hear any 'Trick Of
The Tail' moods from it, just Tony Banks as he usually sounds
on his solo recordings. Nick Kershaw and Fish as well as some
others are featured on vocals.

| I know this is the Genesis note, but could someone post Tony Banks' solo
album names. I've often checked for them, but never see them anywhere.
Thanks,
- dave
p.s. I think "We can't dance" shows the boys still have "it" - that quality
which makes them a great band that produces some excellent music. Hey,
12 tracks, 70 minutes of music(!) -- if a couple of formula "Phil tunes" leak
in, so be it.
p.p.s. Phil Collins was interviewed a number of months ago on David Letterman
(prior to them going into the studio for this album). He said that the
tour would be constrained to a few cities -- the "Invisible" tour took too
much out of their family lives, etc.

| About Wind and Wuthering sound that we would never hear again (I
thought :-)): Track 8, between 4:56 and 5:03, there is piece which
sounds very much like what there is in "One for the Vine", the bit of
instrumental that there is just before he climbs on the hill (in the
song). Yet, 7 seconds is not a lot, I admit :-)
About money: Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford have a solo career that
many artist may envy. From the innermost Face Value, Collins, in spite
of the varying quality of his solo albums, has always had great success
(at least in France). I know about two solos from Rutherford, and I
enjoyed them a lot (the two last ones). Banks has probably been less
successful, but he makes music less 'commercial' than the two others,
IMO. This doesn't mean that I listened over 50 times to The Fugitive
for hearing the imperceptible noise of my CD player engine :-)
I guess they have plenty of money, and the fact that they do care about
their family is an indication for me that they are more relaxed, and
they do stuff for their pleasure.
Pierre.

The work on Soundtracks is culled from the movies Quicksilver (with Kevin Bacon)
The Lion and the Cobra (I think---I believe this was a British film, not released
in the US). He also did the soundtrack for The Wicked Lady (with Faye Dunaway
and John Gielgud). The actual soundtracks for Quicksilver and The Wicked Lady
were released in the states, Quicksilver even on CD. I believe I've seen TWL
on disc, but I can't remember...
It was funny when I finally caught The Wicked Lady on cable, 'cuz I already knew
all of the musical themes!
Most people are aware of Phil's Against All Odds from the movie of the same
name, but fewer probably know that there is a Mike Rutherford (no MeCan1c5) song
on the soundtrack, too. During the movie a snippet of it is played as they
pan into the nightclub (just before the Kid Creole and the Coconuts number).

| Has anyone heard anything about a possible Centrum date for GENESIS ??
I read in the Herald a few weeks ago that Genesis might kick off a busy
year of concerts at Foxboro Stadium in May.
I like We Can't Dance a lot more than when I first commented on it, I
guess I just would like to hear something a bit more "adventurous" and
not so commercial...but I like it !!
Also, I may get into collecting bootlegs of various live shows, and
videos if possible. Does anyone know a good source for such material??
I have seen several boots at "Second Coming" in Cambridge on both CD
and vinyl...I'd be more interested in the CD format. I was wondering if
there are noters out there who have any or a lot of these, which ones
have good quality, which ones to avoid, etc...
any info would help, and if you do not want to discuss here, please
write to me off-line.

Most of the bootlegs that you can buy are ridiculously overpriced trash
compared to what you can trade for from people who tape shows themselves
from the audience or tape FM broadcasts. If you want bootlegs, try small
record stores, particularly those that cater to collectors. There are
some "collector" newspapers and magazines that openly advertise them.
I don't know how they get away with it but they do.

| GENESIS TONIGHT FOXBORO ALLLLRIGHT !!!
Heard Tony Banks on BCN at lunch, he says that the "old" medley will
cover from 72-77, actually with a riff from 1970 thrown in their. He
said it will take the real experts to pick that one out...well Tony,
not the real experts, just the real FANS, those who know that he's
probably referring to a riff from "Stagnation" or "Visions of Angels"
or something else off of "TRESPASS". This should be interesting, the
updated "medley" I would guess just replace the "Cinema
Show/Slippermen" bit between In the Cage and Afterglow
so, as anticipated, of a 2.5 to 2.75 hour show, a measley 20 minutes
will cover the best stuff. I do love a lot of material from Duke,
Abacab, and the last 3 albums too, but the 70's stuff was the real
GENESIS to me...
I'm psyched for this show though, should be some great music, some neat
visuals...

| I had the pleasure of finally (after 14 years) seeing Genesis again
last Saturday at Skydome in Toronto, Ontario (home of the Blue Jays).
Songs Played (in no particular order, but vaguely sequential)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Land Of Confusion
No Son Of Mine
Throwing It All Away
Driving The Last Spike
'Oldies' Medley - Dance On A Volcano
- Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/Musical Box
(like on 'Seconds Out', but a shorter 'Lamb')
- Firth Of Fifth (instrumental break)
- I Know What I Like
- Illegal Alien (sort of a chorus)
- That's All (two choruses)
- Follow You Follow Me (two choruses)
Fading Lights
Jesus He Knows Me
Dreaming While You Sleep
Home By The Sea (both parts)
Hold On My Heart
(pause, then dual drum solo, leading into)
I Can't Dance
Domino (the whole damn thing, I think)
Invisible Touch (encore)
Turn It On Again
I'm probably forgetting a tune or two, but they DEFINITELY didn't do:
Mama
In Too Deep
Behind The Lines
anything from ABACAB (or so it seemed)
However, they did play for almost 2.5 hours, and as usual, the lights
and sound were amazing.
Personal nit-picking: I could have done without 'Domino', 'Invisible
Touch', and 'Fading Lights', and instead hear
full versions of 'Follow You Follow Me' or maybe
the tunes that I mentioned above
(I am definitely aghast that they played 'Invisible Touch' instead of
'Mama' in the encore, even though they did play a more 'punchy' version
than on the album)
I'm also quite surprised that aside from the medley, they only played
two tunes that weren't from the last two albums. I realize they have
always favoured exposing new material, but some of their new material
might be better left 'unexposed' (or just played on that tour).
How does this compare with other shows on the tour? Any ideas?
Cal C.
(still bummed out that he missed the 'Lamb', 'Trick Of The Tail', and
'Wind & Wuthering' tours, because even then, Genesis tickets sold fast)

Wes, if that makes you cringe, you should hear one of my live tapes.
They do a medley of classic rock songs, including songs by The Who,
The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, etc. Towards the end, Phil starts
singing Culture Club's Karma Chameleon. Baaaaaaaaarrrrrrrffffffff!!
To me, listening to that medley is kind of like having a Christmas

and then going into that 60's medley...vomit city...here is a classic
rock band with enough old and faithful fans that they could play
anything from their recorded material, and they have to give us there
version of a 60's medley....as in the Yes note, GENESIS should consider
putting out a box set, or even 2, I think they could do a 4 cd live box
set that would be a killer...think of it, Peter's live Supper's Ready,

| RE. 41 True, but I think a more comprhensive collection of their live
material would be nice to have. I have a live version of Supper's Ready
by Peter, but it's a noisy boot, and something cleaned up and
remastered would be so welcome...and I'd like to hear more of the Trick
tour, with Bruford
the live version of "The Knife" from their 1st live album is one of
Steve Hackett's shining moments in Genesis, IMO, his solos are worth
listening to repeatedly

I picked up a used CD boot called 'Watchers of the Skies' while in
Boston recently. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in 1973 and
includes a -beautiful- 'Supper's Ready'. Clean, clean sound, and the
recording is quite good, for a boot. I wanted something high quality to
listen to and re-live those incredible old performances with. This did
the trick. After 20 seconds, I was sitting in the 14th row of the Felt
Forum again.
Now--all I need is to find a good, live recording of 'Salmacis' and
'Can-Utility and the Coastliners' from around the same era....and
I'll be set.

| RE -1 would you mind telling us where you found this, and how much $$
thanx...
I stopped into Strawberries yesterday, they are having a sale on
"mid-line" cd's, and found "Trespass" released by MCA. I was surprised
to find it, I thought it was only an import, and Strawbs doesn't do
imports, MCA would be US anyway...but it was priced at $11.99, but with
the sale, it was $8.88 !!
the find of the day, so I grabbed it. I'ts been so long since I've
listened to my vinyl copy, I can't determine the quality etc...but some
of the organ sounds sounded a bit distorted, (during The Knife for
instance) and ends of songs seemed to be cut off abruptly, but again,
that may be like the record. Overall, I would say it sounds ok (after 1
listen) the guitars are nice and clean, I didn't think it was too hissy
on first impression

Sure. I found it in a used CD/tape place in the Fenway area. I think
Planet Records is the name of the place. In case that's not right,
it's on the south side of the street (Commonwealth ?) You've got to walk
up about a dozen steps from street level. Across
from Boston University, I think.
It was expensive--$25. But to me, believe it or not, it was worth it.
The cover was an Armando Gallo shot of a later-era performance of the
'Eggs is Eggs' sequence from SR...where Peter began to use the guywires
to float off the stage. The album covers 'Watcher', 'Moonlit Knight',
'Firth' (without the piano intro), 'More Fool Me', and 'I Know What I
Like', as well....
Let me know by mail if I can provide you with more info, such as
distributor, etc.

"Live, the Way We Walk" is on video now. Over 2 hours, on
sale at Lechmeres for $19.00. If anybody gets it let us know
how it is please. It will be a while before I get it, I'm saving
money for the new Jethro Tull stuff coming out.

41.47 | 4 Sides Live ???? | MAYES::OSTIGUY | | Fri Jul 16 1993 12:11 | 12 |
| Has anyone picked up the "Live-The Way We Walk" video yet ?? I haven't
yet...
Three Sides Live was released in 2 versions, the UK version being live
on side 4 as well, which had One For The Vine, and I think Watcher of
the Skies intro or something...
is this available on CD at all ?? maybe in the UK ?? can our UK
readers tell us if it is ??
I still think they should hop on the Box-set bandwagon, including some
live unreleased material, I'm sure it would be a winner

His first name is Neil or Paul or something.
His last name is Sedaca or Diamond or Anka or something.

It can't possibly be any of those. I ran thru those name combinations
as well. None of them make sense (as an opening act for Genesis).
I remember everything that has happened/done/said to/for/around me
since I was four, I can't remember the name of this guy.
The concert was an open-air in a meadow with 80,000 people. At 6 pm, as
the announcer said "Meine Damen und Herren, Es ist achtzehn uhr, SWF
drei presentiert <insert name here>" it started to pour.
It was raining so badly. It rained until midnight when the concert was
over. We were soaked. This guy, whatever his name was, sang 45 minutes
under the rain. When Genesis came on stage they took and additional
half an hour to move the stage a little inwards so that Phil wouldn't
get as wet as the opening act.

I recall another thing about this concert: Phil Collins had a piece of
paper written in German that he was trying to read from to announce the
songs in German as a treat to the audience ;-) I guess he was trying to
catch up with Peter Gabriel who speaks almost fluent German (lousy
accent but still) and even has an album in German. PG was also in
Germany at the time (I went to see him the next Sunday).
Anyway, back to the story, Phil is doing his best to read German,
the Americans amongst the audience (there were many of them, a few
thousand) started to protest and Phil started a speech opening with
"I know you are Americans...".
I don't remember the name of the guy though ;-)

that's interesting, there was no opening act in Foxboro on the same
tour, and generally they don't have an opening act....they don't need
one in my opinion

In the news group there is a guy who was born after "lamb lies down
on broadway" and he is desperately looking for a video of one of
the live performances. As it turns out, there is none. Absolutely
nothing. There aren't any videos of "selling England by the pound"
either. If anybody has taped even bits and pieces of either of these
shows, will definitely become rich soon.

THis is a few months later, but I was fortunate to have seen the Lamb
tour, and have never seen a video of the performance. However, I did
manage to pick up (on CD) a really nice audio copy of one of the
performances, which I believe was recorded on the continent in 1974.
I also have a more horrid bootleg of a Lamb performance at the
Birmingham Hippodrome, replete with a lot of the repartee that Peter
used in between the tunes, both as part of the story line, and as some
self-deprecating humor at the pretentiousness of some of his lyrics.
Example:
At the beginning of the second half of the show, PG is explaining the
story line so far, and the story line of what is about to be played in
the last set. He is describing the entry of the 'golden globes' that
float into the room. Very serious. Then he just stops. He then
screeches in a Monty Python-esque British woman's voice:
"I WAS AMAZED BY THE BRIGHTNESS !!! said Mrs. J.H., of Bournemouth"
The crowd immediately erupts into tremendous, prolonged laughter. Each
time I hear it, I do the same.

| Follow You, Follow Me is on the Genesis album "And Then There Were
Three" from 1978..it is not a Phil solo song...don't know if you're
into Genesis, but it's their 1st studio album after the departure of
guitarist Steve Hackett, leaving Phil, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks
to produce the studio albums, thus the title...
the album was an attempt to write "shorter" songs than Genesis had been
known to do, and it has some nice stuff on it...Deep In The Motherlode,
Burning Rope, Ballad of Big, The Lady Lies...etc

| There's a tribute album out, called "Supper's Ready" - but details are
scant - alt.music.genesis isn't available on the nntpd.lkg.dec.com news
server, so I couldn't find any details there. CDnow lists the artists
as SINCLAIR/HENTSCHEL/MAGELLAN BARDENS/GOODSALL/HASLAM/BERR - some
somewhat familiar names from the Canterbury crowd (Camel, Caravan, and
other ancient early 70's progressive groups).
So - if anyone finds out more - please share the info. I'm slightly
intrigued but not enough to buy it - I'm more interested in the XTC
tribute, which was released this month.
