| I know this is going to sound like a stupid question but please keep in
mind that I live out in the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire. The
question is, is "The Fly" being played on the radio? I punch buttons
on the way into work between 'BCN, 'FNX, 'ZOU, etc. and I haven't heard
it played or heard it or the new album mentioned. The only time I've
heard it was its premiere on MTV a few Sunday's ago.
I wasn't impressed with R&H either.

They still haven't done ant interviews yet though. Daniel Lanois, the

There's been a bit of controversy surrounding that picture of Adam
Clayton I mentioned in .0 . It seems that stickers are going to be
provided to cover his private parts in some of the more sensitive
states/countries. Island are afraid the record might be banned.
There's to be another single release before christmas but for the

P.S. Interesting article by Brian Eno on the making of the album in

looks/sounds like. It's part of U2's contract that they have the final
word . Island can't dissaprove anyway 'cos U2 own/owned 10% of the
company.
Plus it is rumoured that Adam was so insistant that the picture stay
on that he claimed he'd leave the band otherwise. He evidently wants
the world to know just how eligible a batchelor he is.
Most big record shops I've been to in the last week or so are putting the

The album 'Actung Baby' was premiered on Dave Fanning's show last
night. It is just under one hour long and contains twelve tracks. I
listened to some of them over and over again and two in particular,
'one' and 'who's going to ride your wild horses' are brilliant and if
released as singles will go to the top.
So right now, I have heard eight of the twelve tracks,
The Fly
One
Until the end of the world
Mysterious ways
Acrobat
Zoo Station (very different from the normal u2 stuff)
So cruel
Who's going to ride your wild horses (brilliant)
Even better than the real thing
Ireland didn't get through to the Euro finals which was very
disappointing but the release of the new U2 album should alleviate some
of the disappointment.

| A few days ago I bought the CD. At first I wasn't too impressed (stuff
with a beat doesn't do much for me, anymore). The more I listen to it,
the better I like it!
I was a little concerned, at first, the band might be leaning towards that
"top40" (YUCK!!) dance crowd, but their music still has depth--if not a
beat, now.
I still prefer the Boy and Unforgettable Fire eras, but I'm not unhappy
with Actung Baby. I'll listen to it a few more hundred times. Besides,
it's the neatest looking CD I've seen.
The picture of Adam has been censored here in the states (I don't

| My initial reaction to hearing it was "We waited 3 years for THIS.
Ugh!" However, after listening to it the past few weeks I'm of the
opinion that this represents more of the "original" U2 music that I
fell in love with years ago. I'm not saying it sounds like early U2
but I think the ingredients that made up the early material is there.
I have grown to really like this effort - it's miles beyond Rattle &
Hum. I think my initial dislike stemmed from an expectation of what I
thought it was going to sound like and it being so radically different from
that expectation.
The thing I like most about it is the Edge sounds like the Edge. Lots
of the "sound" he's noted for vs. the straight playing he offered
on R&H and TJT. I guess raw is the adjective to use to describe it. He
always struck me as a better engineer than a player. Jimmy Page he ain't
but that's okay - I like what he does.
Bono's voice sounds more subdued than on recent efforts. This time he
opts for subtleness (sp?) vs. shoving it down our collective throats.
He seems to want to let the lyrics speak for themselves.
The only thing I don't really like is it seems painfully obvious that
Adam Clayton possesses less than minimal bass playing ability. I never
really thought it was much of a detriment to them until now. I realize
not everyone can be a Greg Ridley (boy does this give my age away!) but
some of the stuff he does sounds really akward. Then again he's
parlayed it into a million dollar bank account so who the hell am I to
nitpick 8^)
Anyway, I think it's good stuff. It and The Unforgettable Fire are my
favorites. I wasn't going to go through the hassle of trying to get
tickets for this tour but I'm curious to know how some of this stuff
will sound live. After listening to TUF I thought the same thing and
that was the best show I've seen them do so I may break down and
attempt it. Unless they play Boston Garden. Yuck!!!! That place is
the pits. I can't believe bands are performing there again.

This is the first U2 L.P. that I've really liked on the first listen .
Everyone talks about it not being as immediate as The Joshua Tree .

| I went out and got this for myself for Xmas.
It's taking a few listenings, but I do like it. Not as much as Joshua
Tree, and so far, not as much as Rattle n Humm, but it's getting there.
The different sounds on each song is really interesting. Zoo Station
reminds me of Prince way back when. So Cruel is far and away my
favorite. A beautiful song to listen to, a little depressing on the
lyrics, but no less beautiful.
I like the CD layout, the folding cardboard box with a thousand
pictures on it. Much better than a case with an insert slip.
Good stuff.

The lyrics are great, too.

| In today's Boston Globe, Steve Morse writes that "... it appears the band will
fulfill many longtime Irish dreams by playing Boston Garden on St. Patrick's
Day."
To paraphrase the rest, U2 had originally planned to play only small markets on
this initial leg of their tour, but it wasn't practical. The tour will start
in late February in Florida. They will play large arenas in late winter and
spring followed by a stadium tour this summer.
For those in the New England area, the following dates are tentative:
Hartford Civic Center - undetermined date, week of March 8.
Worcester Centrum - March 13
Boston Garden - March 17
Also expected that they'll play up to two nights at Foxboro Stadium in August.
The Boston Garden did confirm the St. Patrick's Day date, although no ticket
info yet available since nothing has been signed yet.

| When I called the local radio station for the phone numbers they also
told me that the agencies will be cross-referencing credit card numbers
and names so if you get through more than once and either charge or
reserve tickets they'll cancel the duplicates. The band wants everyone
to have an equal chance to go to at least one show. After 20 years of

than once to the same show they'll erase the duplicates, whether it's a
charge or a reservation because they'll look at name duplications and
credit card number duplications. You can go to both shows. The
agencies aren't cross-referencing each other, just their own databases.
Good luck.

| Whew.....had me nervous there. I actually don't mind waiting
in line. I guess when I buy something, I like to have it in
my hand. Tickets can get lost in the mail. If I lose them,
at least I can blame myself. Waiting in line isn't that bad.
You get to meet a lot of interesting people. It can get cold
if you wait a while though. If you're first in line, you at
least have a slight chance of getting near the stage. By phone,
you have no choice. I was getting excited for this tour because
I thought I may be able to get a seat in the first ten rows.
There's no chance of that now. Oh well, the show's gonna be great
no matter where you sit!

Tickets also go on sale for Long Island and the Meadowlands tonight
at 6:00 p.m. by ticketmaster phone only!

| In reference to .54 - if you reserve your seats; i.e. you do not use a
credit card, you'll have to pick the tickets up at the box office on
the day of the show. Won't that be a zoo.
Another interesting thing the lady at the radio station told me was
that one of the reasons they'll allow you to reserve seats and not use
a credit card is that they know a lot of people's cards are maxed out
due to the economy, unemployment, etc. So this gives them a chance to
still get tickets.
Going the phone route is like playing a slot machine. But it could be
worse - these could be the days before automatic redial!

This is what gets me P.O.'d. I mean, the phone thing is great to keep tix out
of the hand of *illegal* scalpers, but I wonder how many of the tix went on
sale to the public and how many were held for legal scalpers, i.e. ticket

U2 has historicly been one of the loudest bands that tour... it's just
that most people don't notice it because they try to make the sound
quality good... they bring LOTS of amplifier power... and LOTS of
speakers... then only play them at a small percentage of their
potential... that's how you make good sound loudly.
re -.2
I suspect tickets prices are dropping because the New England area is
saturated with shows. From Worcester... there are 7 shows within a 3

38.95 | | PCOJCT::TURNOF | Greetings from the Big Apple | Fri Mar 13 1992 11:14 | 72 |
| Given the volume of mail regarding this group, I thought I'd give my 2
cents as a concert goer to the Nassau Colliseum show this past Monday.
Having been lucky enough to have seen the band twice before on the
Joshua Tree tour, I eagerly anticipated seeing what they would do for
the Achtung Baby tour.
I try never to go to a concert (and I go alot) with any preconceived
notions AND I accept the fact that bands want to grow and change.
Otherwise both the band and audience goes through the motions.
Given that soapbox start, I thought this was one of the best shows I've
ever seen. U2 is one of the few bands that can "get away" with doing
eight (count'em 8) songs from their new album in a row at the beginning
of the show. To say the audience was enthralled by the performance is
an understatement. The stage is quite a sight - those East Germany
cars, The Trebants are hanging from the top of the stage and during the
show they rotate around and project lights into the audience and onto
the band. They are also painted using different symbols - one has the
Keith Haring babies, one has 60's style flowers, etc. At one point, Bono
makes a plea to the audience to practice safe sex - (and gives a plug
for those Achtung Baby condoms selling for $2.00 at the merchandise
stands!). There are also rotating video screens, lasers, etc. They
use modern technology to its full effect. They get that full
"industrial" sound that's so prevalent on the new album. From where I
was sitting (behind the stage) the sound was great - though one review
I read complained about the sound being too hard edged.
After the new tunes the band shifts out to the "other stage" set about
30 - 50 feet into the audience for Angel of Harlem, done with acustic
(sp?) instruments - they look a bit like street musicians and the
audience was throwing coins at them!
Don't expect any songs from Boy or October - they're not part of the
show - none of the "anthems" the group is known for - no Sunday Bloody
Sunday, no 40, no Gloria, etc. Yes, Pride, yes Bad. They did one
cover song originally by Lou Reed (I forgot the name).
When I saw them on their last tour, The Edge played straight out, took
alot of solos and seemed to be featured alot. This tour is all Bono the
showman! He changes clothes about 3 times (wait til you see what he
wears for the encore - I don't want to spoil the suprise by saying what
it is!) and he is all over the place, really playing to the audience!
The crowd was on its feet from beginning to end - the energy given and
taken was great.
Late in the show, Bono said he heard that some people payed $500 for
their tickets and said that the band just was not worth it! FYI - we
didn't see one scalper selling tickets in the parking lot - a new
first.
I only have one complaint - that the concert was too, too short.
INCLUDING encores it clocked in at 2 hours. Last tour it was about 2
hours 20 minutes. (More soapbox follows....) I really believe that
they should drop the opening act and do two sets or one very long set
(ie. Dire Straits, Springsteen, Grateful Dead). They (IMO) are part of
rock 'n roll's upper echelon and should present a longer show to
compliment that status (end soapbox).
Hint for those without tix... keep trying Ticketmaster - tickets are
coming into the computer on an erratic basis. I try every day for the
MSG show and the operators said it's best to try the few days before
the show, tickets do come available.
For those who'll be at BG for St. Paddy's Day - I'm jealous!! You're
in for some show!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dat's all folks!!!

thing I didn't like was the way they played Zoo
Station and Ultraviolet. Bono said he was having
trouble with his throat. At the end of the show,
he kicked the microphone stand in what appeared
to be in disgust. At the end of With Or Without
You, he said "I'm sorry." and the band walked off
the stage, house lights. No Love is Blindness.....
Could Bono's throat been so bad as to not finishing
the song????? Tonight's show at the Centrum should

From where I was sitting it appeared that when Bono kicked the
microphone stand it came close to hitting some people in the front row.
It looked to me like he was apologizing to them for almost hitting
them.
Yes the show was great. However it was so loud it came just short of
distortion. Whether that was because of the way they set it up or
where I was sitting I don't know. I've never been to Hartford before
so I don't have any othe show to compare it to. I've seen U2 before and the
sound quality has always been great so it's probably the latter.
Tonight's show will give me an answer.

| Well, I was at the Providence show last night and I thought it was
wonderful. Our seats were in the second row back from the stage over
to the left right next to the walkway that Bono walks out into the
audience on. It was very interesting to see famous people that
close-up. (Although I've been to a lot of concerts, this is only the
second time I was ever this close. The first time was for a Duran
Duran show at the Centrum several years ago.) I thought Bono was much
smaller than I expected him to be, and not quite as conventionally
handsome as I thought he would be, although he *is* attractive...cute
really. His nose looked bigger in person, and his hair looks darker.
(I think he must dye it black?) He does has a great smile and he
appeared to be enjoying himself.
I thought Adam Clayton was much better looking in person than I
expected. The hair is an improvement. The Edge looked exactly like he
does in photos and TV, and Larry's head was behind a cymbol most of the
time.
I had never seen them in concert before and I thought they were
fantastic. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever been to.
When Bono walked down the runway, into the audience, a lot of the
people standing next to it were stretching out their arms to touch him,
or shake his hand. I thought he was very good about trying to connect
with the crowd. He grabbed and slapped quite a few hands, and kissed a
couple of women's hands. I thought he seemed very friendly and nice
about it, and not at all arrogant or cocky. My daughter was stretching
her hand out all evening and finally toward the end he finally grabbed
her hand and squeezed it, so she was happy.
It's like another world seeing a concert from that close-up. I was so
busy watching Bono that I didn't even notice the screens or lights, or
the overall show, the way I do when I'm sitting far away.

| My daughter and a friend waited outside of the Four Seasons Hotel, in
Boston, yesterday afternoon, and finally each got a picture with Bono
and The Edge, and each got an autograph. She was thrilled. She said,
her friend, who happens to be from Ireland, so has an Irish accent, (I
don't know if that helped!), called out, "Hey, Bono, do you have a
minute?" and he walked over to them. He didn't say much, but put his
arm around each of them for a picture, and signed autographs, and he
was signing other autographs when a security guard asked him if he
would go inside because he was starting to draw a crowd.
Then, The Edge got out of a taxi and he stopped for them, for a picture
and autograph, too. My daughter said he was complaining about the
cold.

and then the "All lines are busy..." recording came on. Needless
to say, he was ticked! I have seen them at Providence, Hartford,

improving each time they play. If you don't have a ticket, go grab

Did anyone see Dixie Whatley's review on the news? She seemed rather
miffed that the band wouldn't let them record any of the show for the
newscast. What was shown was directly from the video screen. Also
heard there were a few scalpers arrested outside. Good.

| Well, it was wonderful. I was at the Garden last night and, not only
do I think it was one of the best *concerts* I've ever seen, I think it
was one of the best *times* I've ever had!
I loved it...I love Bono...I love his voice...his charisma... :-)
I, also, love my daughter who managed to get 4 good seats yesterday for $25.
each, from a guy who works for U2. He told her he'd have them held for
her at the Box Office, and, by god, they were there. Unbelievable!
:-)
I thought they did an incredible job on the songs. They sounded
wonderful. They were out for 2 hrs. (If I had never seen 2 4-hour
Springsteen concerts, I would think that was perfectly acceptable! :-)
But, I think Bruce has ruined it for me for all-time when it comes to
how long acts should stay on stage!)
I enjoyed the U2 concert last night more than any I've ever seen
with the exception of Bruce. (But, I consider God to be second only to
Bruce, so that means a lot!)
Now, back to my normal, mundane existence.

| I'm probobly in the minority, but I thought it was just "o.k." The opening
band was the Pixies - simply horrible IMO. U2 had a pretty cool stage set-up
and did put on quite a show; if that's what you went for, then I'm sure it was
a very very very good show. But I felt like I was watching eMpTyV, especially
during the new songs, and for some reason that just didn't move me all that
much. Maybe it was because I haven't listened to much of Achtung Baby and I
just could get into the songs like some people were, I dunno. I did like the
acoustic version of Angel of Harlem. And I thought the images and voice of
MLK, Jr. during Pride was a very cool touch. And Desire cooked, as one would
expect. I wish they had played a few more pre-Joshua Tree songs, there is a
ton a pretty good material there. Maybe they should consider a longer show (I
*know* they should, just have to convince them ;^).
All in all, IMO the show just didn't live up to all the hype that it got. I
guess I was hoping for more of a focus on the music and less on the stage
gimmickry. I got that at times, but overall felt like I was at a musical play
or something. I must admit though, that for the Boston Garden the sound was
much better than I expected (at least at my seat).
Oh, and you U2 trivia buffs will like to know that the drummer sang a song (an
Irish folk song I believe???) supposedly for the first time ever.
Like I said, it was a good concert, just not great for me.
My $.02,
Scott

38.121 | Review of several shows... | EMDS::OWEN | The reality of my surroundings | Wed Mar 18 1992 13:56 | 328 |
| Well, as some of you know... I've had tickets to five shows. Four of those
shows are history and there is one more to come. I feel now is a good time to
make an attempt at some sort of review. I've written this huge message in bits
and parts after each show... so forgive some of the 'choppyness'. Any comments
are appreciated....
Let me start from last night, March 17th at the Boston Garden... St. Patricks
Day! All I can say is that they keep getting better.... Hartford was
excellent... (the crowd stunk, but U2 was excellent). Worcester was simply
wonderful. Providence was also fantastic... but the Boston show was something
to remember. When they say "Boston is their home away from home", I really
tend to believe them.
Hometown boys (sort of) the Pixies opened the set... they were better received
here in the college town of Boston than at any of the other shows...
unfortunately, I got there a little late... so I missed them doing a couple of
my favorite Pixies tunes... "Debasser" and "Sad Punk". These guys are an
excellent opening act for U2. It's like they (U2) are saying "look people,
there are some great new bands out there... go listen to them!"
After a short intermission, U2 hit the stage... A semi-full review of the
Worcester show is later in this message, so I'll save you all the details till
then... but there were a couple of St. Patty's Day surprises!!!!
After "Angel of Harlem" (which U2 plays out at the small stage in the
audience), we were in for a special treat. As far as I know they haven't
deviated at all from the set list until Boston... rather than leaving that
small stage like they usually do, they stayed and played a couple more songs...
The first one was an Irish folk song (does anyone know the name?) which Larry
sang most of. It's the only time that I'm aware of that Larry has sung in
concert. His voice isn't the greatest, but he was singing from the heart... it
was wonderful. That song lasted a while with additional verses being sung by
Edge and Bono as well. Then Larry, Adam, and Bono left the stage and Edge said
some words (I don't remember what he said exactly), and then he played
"Van Diemens (sp?) Land". Fantastic...! Does anyone know if he played that
song on the European/Australian tour they did after Rattle and Hum came out...?
It was just Edge and his guitar... and both sounded great.
For the rest of the show (both before and after these additional songs), U2
were much looser than I'd seen them before... Edge was really into it. He
played with amazing energy. Bono was running around and being more sociable
than usual. The crowd as so loud at one point, and Bono was trying to say
something, he just stood there with the huge grin on his face until we decided
to quiet down... then he forgot what he wanted to say, or at least he decided
it wasn't too important. This was typical of this show. There was a
connection between the the band and the audience like I've never felt before at
any show.
It was wonderful seeing them in such fine form. They were so relaxed and
having as good a time on stage as we were in the audience. I wish it had
lasted forever. Now on to talk about some of the other shows I've seen on this
tour....
The first show was March 12 (Thu) at the Hartford Civic Center.
First off... let me complain about Connecticut and it's citizens.... (If any of
you or your loved ones are from CT, I apologize... every state has it's fair
share of idiots... but they all seemed to show up at the Hartford Civic
Center that night) It seemed that every drunk-jock-high-school-looser and his
girlfriend were there. The two guys behind us kept falling over our seats (we
were standing on our seats because we were near the back of the floor).
After about the 6th or 7th time, I decided to tell security. The
security person told me it wasn't his problem. So I told a cop (they have cops
in the Civic Center)... he told me it was security's problem... everyone was
pushing and shoving... the mens rooms were crowded and people were taking a wiz
in the sinks... It was basically a crummy place for a show. Oh... and
parking... there is none. The put you in those 'sardine' lots... leave
your keys etc... I HATE that. Oh... and when I got home, my car decided it
didn't like it's head gasket anymore and promptly told me so by leaking
anti-freeze everywhere I went.... (I'm now driving my sisters car until I fix
it) So now you're thinking the night was a complete loss... right?
WRONG!
The show was fantastic... I can't describe in any other way than by saying it
was a multi-media extravaganza. It's like nothing U2 has ever done... or any
band for that matter. The closest thing I can think of was Roger Water's Radio
Kaos tour. U2 even had a live DJ playing tunes before the set. Oh... the show
started late because the ticketmaster computers had pumped out some multiple
seats... so they were working out those problems before the show started. It's
cool that U2 cares about their fans enough to hold off on starting the show
until everyone had seats. One more thing... the side which the 'little stage'
is on keeps changing... facing the stage, it was on the right for Hartford,
and the left for Worcester, Boston, and Providence
And the Pixies were way cool. To help you understand how lame the crowd was,
when they played U. Mass, and Black Francis sings "University of
Massachusetts", and I could hear dozens of people saying, "that guy doesn't
even know what state he's in". Sheesh... like I said... Hartford = lame.
U2's stage setup was most impressive. There were a total of 7 of those little
European cars hanging over the stages... 6 above the large stage, and 1 above
the small stage. As other people have already mentioned, they were painted
with various designs. There were also 4 large video screens made up of 12
smaller screens along the back and sides of the stage. These were on
hydraulic risers so they could be lowered out of the way. 2 of them could
also be spun around so that the folks in the back could get a glimpse of the
screens. There were also about 10 smaller screens scattered about the stage,
and a couple out on the small stage.
On to Worcester... (Friday, March 13th)
Our seats for this show were GREAT! Section 107, row DD. Here... I'll
draw you a map...

My fiancee' work(ed) for Bose (the speaker company) and managed to get those
tickets through the Polygram rep. I'd say about the first 8 or so rows of that
section were record company people. We were right on the aisle 2 rows from the
small stage! I mean... were were RIGHT THERE! The seats were also excellent
for the action on the main stage as well. Our ticket story is quite funny...
we started in section 330 (big time nosebleed), the a friend who had extras got
us into 201. (better, but still nosebleed) Then we got those excellent seats.
Again, the Pixies were excellent... and again they seemed to 'confuse' alot of
people. They come out on stage... and they play. No jumping around... no
nothing... just this wave of sound pounding at you. Here's the Pixies
setlist for Worcester. THANKS PAUL! (I believe it was the same for Hartford)

A quick word about the Worcester crowd, and the Centrum in general. Having now
been to Hartford, Worcester, and Providence on this tour... I can say that I
really appreciate having the Worcester Centrum so close by. The place is not
huge like Hartford. Parking is no problem. The crowds are generally very
cool.
Now to talk about U2...
After the DJ finishes up... most of the lights go down an there's still some
songs being played before the set starts... then Bono comes out on stage,
decked in black shiny pants, black coat, black shades... etc. I'm not sure
what he was singing... but he was the only one on stage. This lasted about a
minute, then the rest of the lights went down and the rest of the boys came
out.... and they ripped into "Zoo Station". A dizzying display of lights and
images accompanied the song. An impressive opening song to say the least.
The next song in the set was "The Fly". I was impressed by Edge's guitar
playing. I was sitting close enough to see that most of the 'noise' present in
this song is being generated by him... (and his thousands and thousands of
dollars worth of equipment) The video array was blasting hundreds of messages
at lightning speed... to the point of subliminalality (is that a word?). For
those wondering, Edge sings the 'high' part of the song in concert...
"Even Better than the Real Thing" was the next song in the set. This one
started with the video screens showing the Home Shopping Channel, QVC. They
were actually tapped into the local cable system because I recognized some of
the channels when Bono started flipping around with the remote, and yes, he did
have control over the remote and flipped until he found something he liked.
Intermixed with the TV images were those of the band on stage (also used
heavily throughout the rest of the show. The camera crew did a fine job getting
great shots while staying out of the way. There were cameras permanently
mounted to the front of the stage pointing in a couple of directions, there
was also one hanging above Larry that was moved via remote control. 3 other
cameras rounded out the set... one on the walkway to the small stage (on
tracks), one 'freehand' camera guy who walked around the stage getting
shots... and another at the soundboard.
"Mysterious Ways" was pretty funny. As someone had already mentioned, it was
Adam's birthday... and so before this song started some woman from a
rent-a-stripper company came out on stage and gave Adam some of her garb, gave
him a kiss, and started to say something. Bono wouldn't let her have the
microphone for more than 5 seconds. Anyway... this one was accompanied by more
video images and other stuff... By now you're probably thinking "Oh.. more
video stuff... great..." Well, let me tell you... it worked VERY well. The
effects highlighted the songs. They weren't used as a crutch. They never got
to be too much... which is quite an amazing feat with this type of production.
"One". This sounded great... better live than on the album I think. Most of
the video images were the same used in the video... buffalo running across the
planes and at the end over the cliff. The small TV's kept showing the word
"ONE' in dozens of languages. I tried to keep count... but there were just too
many.
"Until the End of the World" is probably my favorite song on Achtung Baby. It
moves me every time I hear it... so I expected alot... and I got it. Again,
Edge's guitar playing is just amazing. Bono ventured out onto the small stage
for the first time during the show. He stood on the monitors and TV's
balancing and almost falling down several times... he's amazing at this. He
looks like the clumsiest person in the world, and he does things like stand on
the monitor with one foot out over the audience...yet he rarely takes a tumble.
(although he usually does at least once during a tour...)
"Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" was next in the set... it's a great song,
and it's nice to see that Bono can really belt it out...
Next the whole band heads out towards the small stage in the audience. Bono
has some Champaign (because it's Adam's B-day), and Larry gets some cups from
a security guy and pour them all a glass... they drink and say a few words and
pick on Adam... it was really fun. After they decide it's time to play a song
again, the start into "Angel of Harlem". Like someone else said, they were
were playing like a street band. Sort of facing eachother and just messing
around. It was great seeing them have so much fun. After the song, Larry
spins the car around that's hanging above their heads, and Larry and Adam leave
the stage... Every time they do this, I'm just hoping that car is held up there
well... and I think Edge is wondering the same thing judging from the number of
times he looks up at it.
Bono and Edge are left, and an image of the earth with some sort of foreign
words is shown on the screen above the stage. Bono said something about the
Russian Cosmonaut, and they then play Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love". Way
cool! During the chorus, lights are shined on the car spinning above their
heads turning it into a giant disco ball.
One of my favorite all time U2 songs has to be "Bad". It's just a wonderful
song... They played a fairly 'short' version of this one. In past tours, "Bad"
can run upwards of 15 minutes depending on what Bono's up to... either dancing
with someone, or singing bits of other songs, or whatever... but this one was
only about 6 minutes long... then right from "Bad", "All I Want Is You" gets
played... but only the first verse, and as soon as that's done, right into...
"Bullet the Blue Sky". Another all time favorite of mine. Edge let loose and
ripped through this one... playing a psychedelic sounding guitar noise mayhem.
Amidst red lights, Bono headed out to the small stage for his monologue...
"... and he's peelin' off those dollar bills... slappin' 'em down... ONE
HUNDRED... TWO HUNDRED.... THREE HUNDRED... And I can see those fighter
planes", and Edge makes this wild noise that sounds like jets flying by.
In the background, the monitors are showing giant flames in the shape of
crosses while red lights soak the band...
With Bono still out on the small stage, they start a very mellow version (of
an already mellow song) of "Running to Stand Still". No piano like the album
version, which was good I think... at the end, Bono sings "Alieuia", really
putting everything he has into it... quite exciting and emotional.
"Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World" was next in the set. This is
probably my least favorite song on the album, although I still like it.
The lights then dimmed and the huge TV screens behind them started glowing
orange, much like they did in the "Rattle and Hum" movie. "Where the Streets
Have No Name" started with the quiet keyboard intro as the orange lights got
brighter, then Edges guitar kicked in, then the bass, and drums... and the
crowd was rockin'.
"Pride (in the name of love)" was simply amazing. Video images accompanying
the song were similar the 'brown and white' video of the song. (not really
black and white pictures... more brownish) Anyway, the song ended with Martin
Luther King Jr. giving his last public speech blaring over the loudspeakers and
being seen on the video screens.
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is really a great sing-a-long.
Some people don't go for this kind of thing, but I thought it was good. After
this one, the band said thanks and left the stage... the big video screens
arose to show a video of a bunch of fish in a fish tank. So we watched Wanda
swim around for a couple of minutes until they came back on stage....
The first song of the encore was "Desire". Edge ruled this one with a heavy
hand. More psychedelic guitar-noise in front of Larry's driving rhythm. Very
loud and a bit faster than the studio version. Bono came out wearing a Gold
shiny jacket and pants, ala Las Vegas style performer. Images of lights and of
Hollywood blasted through the video screens. I don't care much for the studio
version of this song, but live it just takes off.
"Ultraviolet" was the 2nd song of the encore... on the video screens was a
woman who was 'singing' the lyrics in sign language... This is a good song,
but I'm not sure what it was doing in the encore.
Lights dimmed again, and a quiet guitar/drum intro lead into "With or Without
You". The little European cars lit the stage as this was performed.
"Love is Blindness" closed the set with images of what appeared to be
constellation maps being shown on the screens... very moody song... but builds
to this great guitar section. In classic Bono style, he selects a young lady
from the audience to dance with him.... and that was it. Anti-climactic you
might think? No... this was a memorable way to end the show. I always loved
how they used to end with "40", and if they've decided not to do that anymore,
then "Love is Blindness" is a fine choice.
So I've seen them 4 times on this tour... and you're asking "Gee, aren't you
getting sick of them?" NO WAY! Even thought the set list has been mostly the
same, every show is different. U2 are a very emotionally powered band, and on
a good night, that emotion just comes through in the songs.
Well... that's it for the Worcester review.... the only other show I haven't
talked about is Providence (Sunday, March 15th).
Providence was about as good as Worcester, and I also had excellent seats...
about 11 rows back in front of Adam. I hated
getting into this place. They only have 1 or 2 entrances, and everyone had to
line up around the block to get into the show... after freezing my butt off
outside for about a half an hour, and listening to the Pixies as we walked by
the exit doors, I desperately wanted to get inside. For those interested,
here's the Pixies setlist for the Providence show... (Thanks again Paul!)

38.122 | how she got the tix | DELNI::STHILAIRE | is it all a strange game | Wed Mar 18 1992 17:09 | 45 |
| re .120, No, my daughter, Melissa, said he was so stunned to realize
that she was standing next to Bono that she couldn't speak. She barely
managed, "Can I get a picture with you?" and when he said Yes and put
his arm around her she said she almost fainted. :-)
(I'm jealous of that, too!!)
But, yesterday, she couldn't stand the fact that she wasn't going to be
at the Garden, even though she had already seen them in Worcester and
Providence and met them on Monday. She tried to get tix when they were
released but couldn't get through.
Her friend, who used to live in Ireland, and knew Adam, when she was a
kid, tried to call him at the Four Seasons, but they wouldn't put her
through. So, Melissa decided to pick a name of someone listed on the
U2 Program, as working on the tour, and called the hotel, said she was
a friend, and she got put through! The guy answered the phone and they
talked for awhile and she asked him if there was any way that she could
get tix for the show. He apparently got a kick out of talking to her
and told her that he would reserve 4 seats, at $25. each, for her at
the Garden.
I didn't think the tix would really be there, but, much to my great
amazement and joy, there were 4 tix reserved for her at the box office,
and they were good seats!
She kept saying, "How did I pull this off? I can't believe I did
this!" :-)
She got very lucky this past week with U2. They are her favorite band.
She loves Bono. She got tix for Providence by getting through on the
phone and they turned out to be in the second row, in front of the
stage, right in front of THe Edge, and Bono grabbed her hand, squeezed
it and winked at her. Then, she went into Boston Monday, on what I
considered a wild goose chase and winds up getting a hug, a picture and
autograph with both Bono and The Edge. A friend had invited her to the
Centrum show, so she went to that. Then, yesterday she calls up this
guy, whose name she saw on the program, gets though, talks to him, and
winds up getting 4 tickets!
So, I got to see U2 twice thanks to my kid, and all I had to do was
come up with the money. And, I enjoyed it *almost* as much as she did.
I don't think anybody enjoyed it *more* than she did.

| re:.121
I have to agree totally with Steve. I have been to all four
New England shows too and Steve's right on the money. It gets
better and better each time. The only thing I have to disagree
with Steve is on the Pixies. I would miss them totally. I was
not impressed that much.
The Hartford show was very good. The only problems with the show
was the Zoo Station, The Fly, and Ultraviolet. These songs IMO
didn't come out that well. They also didn't play Love Is Blindness
and that got me mad.
The Centrum show was very good too and they did play Love Is
Blindness and the three songs I had listed in Hartford came out
much better.
The Providence show I believe was the best. The crowd was more into
it and they played every song really good. The sound quality was
very very good.
The Boston show was a Zoo - excuse the pun. I've never seen chaos at
a U2 concert before. It was a new experience.
Some things about the shows that I thought were worth noting:
1. Security - almost non-existant - you could bring in a television
studio and they wouldn't say anything to you.
2. Zoo TV concept - how can you top that stage show? Fabulous!!!!
3. The Pixies - worth seeing once but four times????? Avoid at all
cost.
4. The crowds in general - not too bad. I've seen a lot worse.
5. BB the DJ - did he play some cool tunes or what? He played different
ones at the Garden but generally kept to the same format.
6. T-shirts - expensive but cool!
7. Set list - would have liked some oldies but very pleased
8. Sound quality - very good, could hear Bono quite well.
9. Scalpers - didn't see many, IMO their plan worked, any scalper I
did see wasn't selling tickets for that much.
For me, this has been a wonderful tour so far. Like Steve, it will
all end for me at Albany. I have to admit that I've had the time of
my life spending all sorts of money and enjoying the band as the tour
improves. I'm going to miss it when it's over. I've met some really
nice people and haven't mind driving all over God's Country to see
them. I kinda wish I could see them some more. Anybody want to sell me
a ticket to Chicago, New York, anywhere? Well even if I don't, I can
wait until summer. If you haven't seen the show yet, I have only One
word to say - GO! Do whatever you can. Bu just go. You won't be
disappointed.
Hey Cookster, are you getting ready for NWA/WCW in Worcester?

I stood outside for 5 hours on Friday hoping for tickets for Friday's show at
the Centrum. I got seats right behind the soundboard/video control center
which I would consider to be obstructed view, but I got in. Cost me a vacation
day and sore muscles (from shivering). Steve, you saw stuff I couldn't see -
thanks for the great description. The one neat part was we were about 5 feet
above the floor and when they went out on the runway we couldn't see the runway
so we saw them "floating" in a sea of hands. Quite a visual...
People ahead of me in line got seats in the third and fifth rows. Those must
be tickets that the band didn't use and got released.
It was cold, but it was worth the wait for me. I the passenger doors of my car
got dented ($600) so like you Steve, this was an expensive concert for me
auto-wise. I don't regret going despite that.
The guy next to me in line had seen EVERY show. He wouldn't get into details
how he had pulled this off. As of Friday afternoon the best show so far had
been at Nassau Coliseum. He and his friend owned an icecream parlor in
Kennebuncport (sp?) and were spending their hard earned summer dollars during
their winter vacation. I was impressed how reasonable the crowd was waiting
in line, simply hoping for tickets to be sold.
There were scalpers in line hoping for extra tickets also. They had beepers
(where's area code 713 anyway??) and cellular phones.
I was about 3-5 feet out of the picture that was in the Boston Globe Metro
section on Saturday... I estimate that there were 400-500 people in line by the
time they started to release tickets at 4:30.

| A Pixies observation:
I am a fan of both U2 and the Pixies (between the two, a much stronger
Pixies fan) and I applaud U2 for making a splendid choice for an
opening band. However, through reading some of the replies in this
topic, I detect overall a somewhat less than enthusiastic response to
U2's decision to have the Pixies open. Let me conjecture as to why.
I kinda saw this coming the first time I heard of the billing. It seems
that a lot of U2 fans have come to know the band through its most
recent works which have been broadcast through the full spectrum rock
radio - Pop stations, top 40, AOR, alternative, etc, whereas the Pixies
are relegated to FNX type stations (for their "softer stuff") and the
college late nite programming.
This sometimes results in a biased judgement regarding the Pixies. I
can't get the image out of my head of the 15 year old who loves the
Joshua Tree clamping his/her hands over their ears and groaning as
"Debaser" or "UMass" blares from the soundsystem.
I guess what I'm saying is that the Pixies are a very different band
from U2 and that they deserve to be judged as such. I'm not saying that
all should like 'em, but at least give them a fair shot.
Does this make sense?

Good point. Speaking in more general terms I get a real laugh when
someone says the support band sucked or if they say they're were
great and don't back it up at all. In either case could it be that
music similar to the headliner is the only style of you like or that
played by the support is one of the many you dislike as a whole?
The making of any band that makes into the general public viewing
audience is some people will hate you and will very much enjoy your
music, and everything in between.

I agree...
It seems to me that there are 4 types of people that exist after the
Pixies left the stage...
1) People who like the Pixies and liked them live
2) People who didn't know the Pixies, and liked them
3) People who gave them a chance and didn't like them
4) People who either didn't give them a chance, or did and were
'confused' afterwards.
I fall into catagory 1, and I must thank U2 for choosing such a cool
band to tour with them.

38.134 | The Pixies | DELNI::STHILAIRE | is it all a strange game | Fri Mar 20 1992 10:57 | 34 |
| I saw The Pixies at both Providence and at the Garden. I had heard
*of* them before, but had never heard their music (to my knowledge).
(My daughter has WBRU on a lot, so I may have heard them and not known
it.)
Anyway, I preferred their selection of songs in Providence to those in
Boston. (They didn't sing the same set.) My favorite was their cover
of the Jesus and Mary Chain hit that they ended their set in Providence
with. I love that song (can't remember the name right now!) and they
did an excellent cover of it.
I didn't care for the first couple of songs they did at the Garden.
The lead singer (Blackie? or whatever?) seemed to be yelling and
spitting rather than singing. I guess I like the stuff they do that
sounds more like mainstream rock. I actually enjoyed a few of the
songs they did in Providence.
I think that one of the problems with anyone opening for a band that is
as popular as U2, is that U2 is the type of band that some people love
more than any other act in the history of music. When some of these
people know they are going to see Bono, in person, in an hour, they
are not in the mood to give something else a chance. That's why Bruce
Springsteen never has an opening act, and I tend to think it's a good
idea, from a fan's viewpoint. From an aspiring musician's viewpoint,
it's not as great, because opening for a famous band, gives so much
exposure.
I tried to give The Pixies a chance, and liked some of their stuff, but
I wasn't especially impressed. U2 is my 3rd all-time favorite rock
band (after Bruce, and Tom Petty) and I admit I was impatient for The
Pixies to get off the stage, and U2 to come out.

not familiar with. I think it has to do with the crowd noise, and other
distractions such as people hooting, shouting, getting drinks etc. There's
just too much going on other than the band...
This is kind of similar to the crowd behavior at concerts discussion that went
on last year.
I also find that I listen to an album several times before passing judgement
on it. You don't get that chance at a show.

| Ye' know, for me it's even wierder. If I'm turned off by something,
I'm usually turned off at the first listen (anything that I feel is
cliche ridden or completely typical of a genre turns me off).
Yet... most things that I really like took me several listens to
warm up to. If it stands the test of repeated listens, I usually end up
liking it.
While on the topic, I might as well say something about U2. I didn't
like the Fly from the first listen (although not for reasons of it
being typical). But... I was initially indiferent to "Mysterious Ways"
which I now like quite a bit. In fact, I like it so much, I may end up
buying my first U2 CD in years (I have "Boy", "October" and "The
Unforgettable Fire" on vinal, and one other on CD... can't remember which
one though; pre-Joshua Tree is all I know).
I also have the song "Til the End of the World" from the soundtrack of
the same name and like that quite a bit too. So, Achtung Baby has actually
made it to my A list for next time I hit Newbury).
I think that Edge's guitar playing is actually evolving from his usual
rut, so that's one positive aspect of this new record. I also like the
fact that they avoided the preachiness on AB, which was what turned me
off about this band (and was why I avoided the mucho-hyped concerts).
As for the Pixies, I gave it a chance. I listen to 'FNX alot and have
been growing progressively less interested because "Alternative" now
seems to mean "bands who's singer can't sing worth shit". I was
indifferent at first, now I shut them off. In the final analysis,
they're not doing anything I haven't heard other bands do, and do much
better.

38.142 | U2/Pixies Northeast shows review | RANGER::CERQUA | | Tue Mar 24 1992 08:23 | 182 |
| When one is married to a U2 fanatic who does a commendable job of putting
up with your own bizarre musical tastes, then one is required to go to as
many U2 concerts as is economically feasible whenever the band comes around
to the local area. This explains why I spent the better part of the last
week at various Northeast arenas watching different performances on the
"Zoo TV" tour (and I'll even admit that, yes, I did get caught up in the
"eventness" of it all, too).
We saw 4 shows in 8 days: Worcester, Providence, Boston and Albany
(we had tickets to Hartford, but had to sell them because of a medical
problem). Overall, I thought that both U2 and The Pixies (the backup
act) were best at Providence; the crowd was best in Boston.
First, The Pixies: they did a different set every night (set lists are
included after the review), which made every performance seem fresh. Their
sets were basically culled from the sets they were doing on their
headlining tour a few months ago; like those shows, the keyboardist from
Pere Ubu was with them on the U2 tour. Interestingly, the crowds in
Providence and Albany gave them the best reaction, while the "home turf"
crowds in Worcester and Boston seemed more indifferent. They did a 15-
song, 45-minute set each night (except in Albany, where it was a 16-song,
50-minute set).
I got to hear most of my Pixies favorites -- "Vamos", a reworked "Nimrod's
Son", a reworked "Gouge Away", "Wave of Mutilation", "Debaser", "Planet
of Sound" -- in the different shows. They played their sets like they've
done them since the first time I saw them, standing very still (my wife's
comment: "Every time we see The Pixies, I always feel that we're walking
into one of their rehearsals."), but I like that. No pretentious posing;
no "How ya doin', Boston?"; no audience call-and-response (which didn't
stop me from shouting "IT'S EDUCATIONAL!" during "UMass"). They present
their music and you either like it or you don't -- there's no "show" to
cover up any inadequacies. I also really like the way that Black Francis'
voice varies from an angelic, almost female-sounding voice to a primal-
sounding scream.
Humorous side-note: The Pixies were announced as being from a different
city/state every night -- Salt Lake City, St. Louis, etc.
U2 did the same set every night (with the exception of Boston, where they
threw in a couple of extra songs due to it being St. Patrick's Day -- set
list is at the bottom of this review); it's bizarre how the same set can
seem very different on different nights. They played their best, in my
mind, in Providence throughout the whole show -- I felt that the encore,
which didn't work very well (except for the very last song) in Worcester
and Boston, clicked in Providence and partially clicked in Albany.
However, the main set (sans encore) was probably best in Boston -- they
were a lot looser and The Edge actually moved around that night.
I'm sure you've already heard/read about the staging by now, so I won't
bore you with a long description; suffice to say that there were lots of
TV monitors, flashing messages, satellite TV transmissions, video images
of the show as it happened, neat lighting effects, etc. There was also
a satellite stage halfway through the crowd for a brief "intimate" set
(which was twice as long in Boston).
I had seen U2 on their previous tour (the "Love Town" tour that didn't
hit the US) and was majorly disappointed with that show; they are playing
*much* better on this tour. Whatever cleansing process they've gone
through has worked; they've recaptured the excitement of the early days
without dipping into the old catalog of songs. Bono's putting on a great
show; he's cut out the speeches for the most part and is concentrating on
his stage persona (even playing up to the critics who complain about his
ego by bringing a mirror out on stage, looking into it and kissing his
reflection).
Anyway, this is a really good tour. Both bands are playing at the top
of their form. The only real downside is the annoying DJ from Dublin
that they have spinning "classic rock" between sets. Not only is the
music out of place, his between song patter (almost identical each night)
is the annoying self-congratulatory type of pandering that many lame rock
acts indulge in ("Give yourselves a round of applause for being here!",
etc.)

| RE: .131
I got the the Garden not even knowing there was an opening band (I had been on
vacation until the day before and missed all the hype, if there was any).
When I realized the Pixies were opening, I was psyched because, although I had
never heard them, I'd heard of them and curious to check them out. For me, it
there was no need to analyze much. As soon as the 'singer' opened his mouth,
that was that. IMO, he couldn't sing at all. He could scream real well, in
fact he screamed so well I couldn't even make out most of the lyrics to
determined if at least I would like the songwriting. The rest of the band
didn't impress me that much either. Had nothing to do with what radio station
they are played on or my expectations of U2 and who they should have open, for
me is was just as 'simple' as musical taste. If you like them fine, but don't
don't be surprised if some of us don't. Opinion is a strange and wonderful
thing - everybody has one but no one's is absolutley correct.
So, from .133...

| I saw U2 in Montreal Monday night. What a show! Bono was really
interacting with the crowd--even with us unfortuate people who were
seated behind the stage (the seats could have been better, but could
have been much worse, also).
I've never been to concert in southern New England, so I don't have
anything to compair the crowd to but I can honestly say that the crowd
in Montreal was hyped in a big way!!
I guess they played nearly the same set referred to in an earlier note.
The band sounded really good, I thought. Edge sounded great, too--I
wish I could get his sound from my guitar.
Mid way during the show they had a jam session on the "little stage"
where the silver car was. I assume they did this in the other shows.
I found this to be one of the highlights of the evening.
I'd like to see them again......maybe they taped one of these shows,
maybe they will be back in the fall?

I went home and dug out the scratchy LP with Share the Land on it and played
both tunes back to back and I can't say that out of the three of us that
anyone could directly identify this comparison. I'll try again; I tried
it one time and everyone wasn't listening quitely....
I can see how you could say "sounds familiar" but to say copied? Well I
dunno if I'd go that far...yet.

mind when I heard Edge lead the song "One" with that guitar
progression. The rhythm of the guitar playing is even the same.

Its probably just jealousy on my part, but a U2 show not ending on '40'

a U2 show. I am sure I will be proved wrong, have a blast.

The stadium is on top of a hill, and while there is parking near the
stadium, there is parking all along Rt. 1 up the hill in dirt lots or
business lots. I believe the price for parking is pretty much the same
all over. With the Genesis concert in June, it was $10/car (at least
further down the hill). If you park farther away, it's about a half-mile
walk. Traffic, as you can imagine, is slow. Rt. 1 has two lanes each way,
but for concerts, they make it three one way and one the other depending
on whether it's before (three lanes toward the stadium) or after (three
lanes away from the stadium) the concert.
As far as stuff to bring, $$$! With this freaky cool summer, you might
want to bring a light jacket as it can get pretty cool at night.

The Irish lads of U2 have been mostly at home in Dublin this year,
rehearsing for the tour and recording what was to have been a five-song
EP (extended play) album.
But they were on a creative roll and ended up recording 17 new songs
and four standards. So in June or July, U2 will release a jam-packed
album.

| Have been listening to my copy of Zooropa for a couple weeks now.
I like it. It's not exactly Achtung, Baby Side II, but it sure ain't
Joshua Tree. Very processed, very electronic (at times, they don't
sound so much like U2 but OMD or another of those mid-late 80's
electronic bands). It feels a little more fluffy what I'm accustomed
to from them, but that's probably due to the different "sound". There
were some songs on Achtung Baby which I thought were decidedly
depressing ("One" and "So Cruel" come immediately to mind), and while
not all the lyrics on Zooropa are happy and upbeat :), few of the 10
songs on here sound even moderately poignant. The Johnny Cash song is
great, probably the best on the album (although I like "Zooropa" quite
a bit and "Lemon" come in a close third).
All in all, I'd recommend it, but only if one a) likes U2 and b)
has bought Achtung Baby and liked that.

and U2 are preparing for Zoomerang. They are apparently getting married

| re .225, from what I've read, Larry Mullen has been dating and/or
living with a woman named Ann for the past several years. I don't know
if he is still with her, or not.
Also, from what I've read recently, Edge and his wife are separated,
but not divorced. (Divorce is illegal in Ireland, isn't it? Not sure
how that works for famous people who usually tend to marry/divorce and
remarry a lot. Maybe they go someplace else to get divorced?) But,
*anyway*, according to what I've read, Edge and his wife are separated,
but not legally divorced. In fact, in this month's Rolling Stone he
says in an interview that he and his wife are still separated, but are
getting along fine as friends, and that, at this point, he couldn't say
which direction the future holds for them.
I'd feel sorry if Bono got divorced. I've always thought it was
sort've cute that he's been married so many years to his girlfriend
from high school, when he's such a desirable man. But, I imagine
gorgeous women have been throwing themselves at him wherever he goes,
which must help to make marriage difficult.

stupid enough to think that any of them would have the remotest
interest in dating an average looking 44 yr. old secretary, even if we
ever *did* have occasion to meet, which would be highly unlikely, since
I don't travel in their circles. Believe me I am well aware that I
could never attract the likes of Bono, and I really don't need you to
rub it in my face in a public notesfile. Of course, my consolation is
that 99.5% of the female population wouldn't be able to attract him
either.
BTW, if your reply was a pitiful attempt at a joke, you forgot the
smiley face!!
Have a nice day,

About those condoms, I'm from Holland and there were no Achtung

About those pizza's: Over here, at the concert T-shirts were sold,
saying: "We'd like to order 10,000 pizza's. Little note from Larry :
Hold the ansjovis. "
Just like .121, I'd like to give a review of the concert I visited, in
Nijmegen, Holland, on Aug 3th. Here it comes:
Since I tried (but failed) to get tickets for the tour from R&H, and
the 9-10-11 May concerts in Rotterdam (which I was especially pissed
off about, since my birthday is May 10, just like Bono), I decided to
take no chance and spend the night at the place they would be selling
the tix the next day. I arrived at 23:00 hrs and there were allready a
couple of people there. We had a lot of fun and the next day I got my
tix. YES!!
Because a rumor I heard (that the security-people would take names of
people who were at the concert very very early, and allow them to get
back later and still have front-row places) I was at the park, where U2
would be playing at 10:00 AM. The gates would open at 15:00 and the
support-acts would start at 18:00. It was raining and noone was taking
names, but we had a great time anyway and when the gates opened, we
rushed in and ran to the front. I'll draw a map for the people who
don't have a clue of what it looked like.

P1 and P2 are spaces, to where you had to run, 'cause they would only
allow approx. 200 people in it. Because of my running talents (I needed
oxygen badly after the 400 m. dash ) I reached P2 before they closed
it. I was 3 metres from the stage!!! We sat there and saw the opening
bands, and after about 8 hrs of waiting Bono entered the stage.
It was just great! He was all in black leather, with the fly-glasses
on. We were lucky enough to get 2 cameras in and used them!!!! There
were a lot of TV-screens displaying all sorts of messages. Bono zapped
the TV after a few songs and said:" Well you haven't come all the way
out here to watch TV, now have you?". The crowd went nuts. Being in the
front, there were only REAL fans surrounding me, and everyone sang
along with ALL the songs.
After having played a couple of numbers on the little stage into the
crowd, they made a connection with Sarajevo. Bono talked to 1 of the
people over there about how it was there and how we all were concerned
about them. Then the show went on and the belly-danser during
Mysterious Ways was a great "object" for our cameras. When the show was
almost over, they disappeared, only to return with Bono in his Mephisto
outfit. He said:" I miss the old days, don't you?" The crowd went
crazy! He went on summing up some of the great things about the old
days, and then said something about:"Don't you miss Hitler?" The crowd
OOOH-ed."Don't you miss the trains running on time?" After a few more
sentences, he called Janmaat, a sort of Hitler-alike-qua-ideas
politician in Holland. He wasn't home, but Bono sang:"I just called, to
say, I love you.. etc". The crowd went wild! "Off with the horns and on
with the show!".
Some air-cannons blew Zoo-TV-money-notes in the air, which everybody
tried to grab. I finally got one! They ended the show with Love is
blindness (during which Bono danced with a girl from the audience) and
closed with an old Elvis-song. Forgot which one.
It took us about 3 hrs to get the car out of the parking lot, but it
was worth it.

38.250 | Melon - Remixes | DNEAST::RUKAS_JOHN | | Sun Feb 12 1995 15:00 | 68 |
| RE: .219
In a highly unusual if not unprecedented move for an act of its
stature, U2 has released a new album exclusively through its fan club
magazine. The album is titled Melon and subtitled Remixes For
Propaganda the U2 World Service Magazine whose Winter/Spring 1995 issue
(No. 21) accompanies the CD.
Melon (an anagram of Lemon remixes of which open and close the CD)
consists of nine remixes of tracks from Achtung Baby and Zooropa
albums. Melon is 63 minutes, 42 seconds in length; the tracks are:
> Lemon (The Perfecto Mix0, remixed by Paul Oakenfold and Steve
Osborne, copyright 1992
> Salome (Zooromancer Remix), remixed by Pete Heller and Terry Farley,
1992
> Numb (Gimme Some More Dignity Remix), remixed by Rollo & Rob D, 1995
> Mysterious Ways (The Perfecto Mix), remixed by Oakenfold and
Osborne, 1991
> Stay (Underdog Mix), remixed by Underdog, 1995
> Numb (The Soul Assassins Mix), remixed by The Soul Assassins, 1995
> Mysterious Ways, remixed by Massaive Attack, 1995
> Even Better Than The Real Thing (The Perfecto Mix), remixed by
Oakenfold and Osborne, 1992
> Lemon (Badd Yard Club Mix), remixed by David Morales, 1993
According to Melon executive producer Nick Angel, Island Records' U.K.
A&R chief, the Perfecto mixes of Mysterious Ways and Even Better Than
The Real Thing were commercially available, while both Lemon mixes were
distributed to DJs. (The Badd Yard Club Mix was included on the
commercial Stay CD5 in the U.S.) All other tracks are previously
unreleased. Angel calls the album "A snapshot of a period when they were
very experimental."
Discussing Melon's genesis, Angel tells ICE "Achtung Baby was a very
experimental album. Mysterious ways was the first track with a kind of
groove that lent itself to being mixed. From there, Even Better Than
The Real Thing followed. These really whetted the band's appetite when
they realized certain people could reinterpret their stuff for the
dancefloor. When Zooropa came out, we picked up the ball again. There
were certainly a few tracks that could be mixed: Numb, Lemon, Crashed
Car. They were very open to it. I can't think of a band of their
stature that would be so open to remixing and restructuring their
tracks."
A remix album was considered, but Angel recalls, "I didn't think we
had enough songs, and I was wary on two levels: I didn't want an
overkill situation for U2 and I didn't think it was fair to ask people
to pay full-CD price. The idea was shelved until the band said, 'We
really like what we've got. Let's make it available to people who are
rabid fans - readers of Propaganda.
.....
"I'm sure it will be massively bootlegged. I think it's just one of
those things you have to accept. Otherwise you'd have to print a
million copies, and people would be wondering what you're doing
flogging remixes a year and a half later. This is a way that the people
who love U2 enough to want to be subscribing to Propaganda can get a
copy for nothing."
In addition to subscription copies of Melon, which reportedly number
around 25,000, Island did a "very limited" media mailing, with stern
instructions not to review it. Meanwhile, the potentially touchy
question of whether new subscribers to Propaganda can acquire Melon is
not addressed in the magazine, although the CD's impending release was
previewed in the previous, Summer/Autumn 1994, Issue. A one-year,
four-issue subscription is $18 (check or money order payable to
Propaganda); U.S. address is rockland Centre, Box 350, Nanvet, NY
10954.

FOR YOUR EARS ONLY
Bonded: "The name is Bono. Just Bono." Doesn't have quite the same
ring to it, but U2's singer and fellow agent the Edge are adding the
title song for the James Bond movie 'Goldeneye' to their burgeoning
soundtrack resume. No Flystyle falsettos here, though; Tina Turner has
been awarded the license to trill. Also dropping from U2 is the
ambient-leaning album 'Operation Soundtracks 1' recorded with Brian
Eno. It will be released Nov. 7 under the band name Passengers (with
Luciano Pavarotti on the charity track "Miss Sarajevo"). Meanwhile,
sessions are under way in Dublin for the next proper U2 release - "a
rock & roll album," promises Bono...

It could be live version of "Bad". The original version was on the

think the live version was a track on an EP released back in the 80's.
