Hi,
Couldn't find a topic in here on the "Red Hot Chili Peppers", so
seeing as they've just come out (a month ago) with a new and very hot
album, and that they're in town next week, I thought I'd start one.
I must admit that I didn't actually get into them until the
"Mother's Milk" CD, but that was all I needed to invest my time and
money to get into the rest of their stuff. As far as I'm concerned,
they're one of the funkiest, most playful, and hardest working bands
out there. Any comments on the topic are welcome, and appreciated.

RHCP is a band that was formed as a side project of members of a couple
of other bands out here in L.A.; I think one was Black Flag???? This
was supposed to be the fun band, as opposed to the more serious groups
that they were in, more hard-core punk outfits. The other bands folded
and this remained.
They have been around here for a long time, but have just become big
nationally, or are becoming big, I guess.

This month's Mix magazine features an interview of RHCP by the
illustrious gadfly Bonzai. The interview was conducted at RHCP's
recording studio/haunted house. It makes for interesting reading...

It definitely wasn't Black Flag. That band was around for quite some
time and featured Greg Ghinn on guitar and Henry Rollins on vocals.

The band you're looking for is 'Fear'. Flea played with fear back in
around '82. They were fronted by Lee Ving, who now does fairly
extensive acting in movies (he was Mr. Body in 'Clue'). The original
four - Flea, Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons were
apparently friends from High School. Slovak died of an OD in '88, at
which point Irons left the band as well, apparently because of
Slovak's death. John Frusciante came in on guitar. He had followed
them around L.A. a bit and they then got him an audition with
'Thelonius Monster' (I think), saw his audition and snatched him up
themselves. I forget where Chad Smith (drums) came from, a pretty
respectable funk outfit I think. All this, plus some other interesting
tidbits can be found in the February 1990 issue of SPIN. It is marked
by a picture of FLEA, complete with green mohawk, on the cover.

| I saw the RHCP show this past Friday night at the Walter Brown Arena.
What a hot show! There were two opening bands, though one must have
been added to the bill fairly close to showtime, as I had only heard of
'Smashing Pumpkins' for opening act. They were impressive. I had only
seen brief clips of them on MTV or some such outlet. The second band,
I can't name, but they weren't very memorable anyhow (IMHO). The
Chilis were in top form. They played about an hour and a half. It was
a pretty well-balanced selection from across the five albums. In the
middle of the show, Chad Smith broke a bass drum head, at which point
Flea and John Frusciante (on vocals for this one) broke out into an
improptu version of 'Sweet Jane' - very respectable. It turned out to
be Anthony Kiedis' Birthday that night, so Flea got the entire crowd to
sing 'Happy Birthday' and then a bunch of dancing girls (actually the
roadies in drag) came out to dance for him during the next song. It
was a fun show, all-in-all. I can't give you a song list, because I
wasn't keeping track.

ps I saw Flea in a movie called 'The Blue Iguana'. Really cheesy movie
(or was it a parody), I only watched a few minutes.

| I also caught the show at the Walter Brown Arena. They were hot that
nite. The other band that played was Pearl Jam. I actually thoght they
were more entertaining then the Smashing Pumpkins.(IMO)

| What was the order actually? I assumed that it was:
1. Smashing Pumpkins
2. Pearl Jam
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
If that's not the order, then my opinions of the first two bands could
be reversed, but regardless, the Chili's show gets a definite 'thumbs
up'.

"Blood Sugar Sex Magik", IMO, is a mixed bag. Some of it
is laid-back and subliminal, like the early releases("Freakey
Styley" and the debut). The rest is of the aggresive, funk-
rock style of "Mothers Milk" and "Uplift Mofo.." I like the
latter. Songs like 'Power of Equality', 'Naked In The Rain',
and 'The Greeting Song' are tight and sizzling. The slower
songs sound like demos in dire need of re-mixing and editing.
Overall, I like it. Not as much as the previous 2, but
since it's been 2 years since MM, it will do.

Here a reply from a Dutch madman working in DEC-Valbonne, France,
who is totally crazy about the Peppers. I have only their last
two albums (MM and RHSSCPM) and I have seen them twice in Holland
(one is four or five years ago, with old drummer and guitarist,
real mad).
I think they are making the best noise in the world. The last
album, in which you hear the enourmous influance of Mr. Funk,
George Clinton, is now the best for me. It fresh, noisy once
and a while, it has ballads (Peppers?) and of course the dirty
textes. When I heard "I could have lied" for the first time, I
though I couldn't believe these were the Peppers. But when I
had translated the text, Yes Sir!!!!
I heard they go on touring in february, is this correct??

| Sorry, I was out for a while (class, vendor trips, etc.), but I'll try
to keep up once again. I hate to have to use set/seen, but 50+ notes a
day is a little much to keep up with when you're away for a week at a
time.

| 'been digging the RHCP song in rotation now: Under The Bridge.
A very nice song indeed. I know it's probably not her, but the woman
that joins the chorus near the end of the song sounds like Kate Bush to
me...

The screaching high vocals in most Chili songs are usually done by
John Frusciante, the guitarist, at least live.

| Well, I only listen to radio back and forth to work, a little over an
hour a day. So, I tend to not get over-exposed to songs. If anything
though, overplay is a function of the radio stations and not the band.
A good song is a good song is a good song; although one can certainly
get sick of a good song (I can name many I don't care to hear anymore).

I think it's a really good song. Like you said, radio stations cause
songs to be overplayed. Nirvana comes to mind (though I'm not tired of
SLTS, I am sick of the other one they have on the radio right now).
Unfortunately, by the time I go out and actually buy this album I
probably won't listen to it due to - overplay - (U2 Achtung Baby comes
to mind - bought it about 1 1/2 months ago and haven't listened to it
yet). I think radio stations would actually boost their ratings if
instead of playing one song from a group for 2 months they would play
various cuts from the album. Of course, that would defeat the purpose
of the single.

The success of stations with tight formats contradicts this one pretty
well. If it was really possible to boost rating by having more
variety, we'd be deluged with variety all the time...

Whay is it so hard to get stations to play alternate cuts? Seems
like everytime I specifically ask for a non-hit tune off a cd I
either get ignored or substituted with a hit single.

| A few local stations have been playing and playing 'Under The Bridge'.
Starts off okay, kinda stark. Minor interest as the guitarist tries to
do Jimi Hendrix playing softly. Innocuous otherwise.. But about halfway
into the song the lead singer goes flat and never comes back into
pitch. Pretty lame effort.

I haven't heard it myself, so take this with a pound of salt.
Our local (Baltimore) record reviewer, J.D. Considine (who also does
mini-reviews for Musician magazine) said something to the effect that
those who wonder why it took so long for the Chili Peppers to make it big
need only listen to this album...the old stuff is much poorer than the
new stuff.

I couldn't disagree more. The earlier RHCP material is *much* better
than the faux ballads and the rest of the new stuff.
