It is suggested you use the following command sequence to access the
    version 3 MUSIC conference:

    	ADD ENTRY MUSIC_V3/FILE=TIMBRE::MUSIC_V3
    	OPEN MUSIC_V3
    	SET SEEN
17.2Suggestion to pick up "new" notesWRKSYS::MARKEYGrand Parade of Lifeless PackagingTue Nov 05 1991 14:3816
Just a bit of info for folks who might not be picking up new notes as
they are written in here: if you accessed music before, your notebook
probably thinks that every note in this conference has already been
seen. The best way to fix this is to do a:

    	SET SEEN/BEFORE=1-OCT-1992

This will set *every* note in the new conference to "unseen" status. I
prefer it that way since I would like everyone to read the notes you
may otherwise dismiss as "administrative drivel" (especially note 1).

Of course, if you're not seeing new notes you probably won't see this
one either which makes me wonder why I'm typing this... :-)

17.4*ALL* NOTERS! PLEASE READ AND HEED!!!!RENOIR::MARKEYGrand Parade of Lifeless PackagingFri Feb 14 1992 13:0070
    Hi folks,

There are certain facts about moderating notes files and some other
facts unique to the music notes file. One fact is that from time to time
someone gets offended by another noter (for whatever reason, it doesn't
matter for this discussion). Another fact is that moderating is
definitely not my full time job. Like most of you, I have schedules to
keep. International standards work keeps my travel quotient pretty high
as well. Therefore, I cannot always react quickly to whatever
complaints/crisis you may have. Inevitably, 1) someone gets mad about
something, 2) I may not see their mail/note for hours or even days, 3)
they get impatient waiting for me to do something about it and decide
to act on their own, 4) everyone goes ballistic, 5) I get a headache.

The co-mods (Dave and Kristy: thank you!) are very helpful sorts, but
like me, they've got lives to live too.

So, I have a new "policy" for this notes file. I will be enforcing this
policy. I don't have enough aspirin otherwise...

When someone writes a note that upsets you, send them this mail:

    ======================================================================

Per music notes file policy, I have requested that the moderator review
note blah.blah. I ask that you set the note hidden until the moderator
    contacts you.

    Thank you,
    xxxx

    =====================================================================

Please use this exact text (don't ad lib). Send it to the person who
offended you and copy me. Do not attempt to "correct" the person
yourself please, this only adds more fuel to the fire. If you receive
one of these notes, please open the file and issue the following
    command:

    set note blah.blah/hidden

You can hide notes you wrote.

At some later point, I will get back to all parties involved. Hopefully,
we can keep situations from going ballistic in this manner. And now for
    the policy part:

    1. If you write a flame response to a note, it will be deleted
immediately (or as soon as I see it). No questions asked.

    2. If someone uses the "mail" method to inform you of a note they find
offensive and you do not react in a "timely" manner by using the
method I described above, I will also delete the note.

Moderating is an issue of balance. I think people who try to throw
their weight around as moderators usually look like turkeys. I don't
wanna be a turkey, but every once in a while, I get the feeling that I
should intervene. I really enjoy this notes file and hopefully, you do
as well. I think if we all stick to the above "rule" we can all be
    happy and safe noters.

    Later babies,
    Brian

(P.S. If you're getting this deja vu feeling, it's because I just
reposted the note after realizing I spelled Kristy's name wrong
    originally).

Some of you may wonder why I have such an aversion to creating new
"notes". In other words, I prefer notes to be bundled under an existing
topic, whenever possible. The reason is that there is an endless cycle
involved - too many notes, too hard to find an existing topic, thus the
urge to create yet another note.

Please, before you create a note, look and see if there is an existing
note. ESPECIALLY check the first 30 topics or so... I really tried to
set them up so that they reflected catch-alls that most people looking
    for information/etc. could use.

    Hi Music Noters:

Two matter on the agenda for today:

#1. The good news. The tally for noters connecting to this conference
has exceed 1000. I'm still in shock.

#2. Maybe people think I've been kidding when I say this notes file
needs a new moderator. However, I'm *not* kidding. I know my
job in this group is coming to an end soon. I have one other
semi-offer in Digital, but there's paperwork snafus and I
doubt it will happen in time. So, let's just assume that very
soon I will be gone. Before I go, I will back the notes file
up to tape. If someone wats to resurrect it after that, then
the tape will be available. However, I will take the notes file
off-line when I leave as I have to return TIMBRE to the group
I borrowed it from. So, the best scenario for this conference
is if someone would step forward now and let me transition it
while I'm around to help you get it going.

    Howdy folks,

Time for another installment in the bouncing notes file saga. I'm doing
this a little bass-ackwards, as I'm announcing this before I talk to
the affected parties (but hell, I'm here, so why not). I'm hoping to
transition the file over the weekend of September 18th. The week of the
21st is most likely my last week at DEC (sob), so I need to get the
file moved. So, as of "close of business" on Friday the 18th, I'll be
backing this thing up and sending it off to it's new home in Marlboro.

Your new host is Kevin Meany and the notes file location will be
MR4SRV::MUSIC. Your new moderator will be Tim Theo, who I'm sure will
want to select his own bevy of co-mods post-facto.

I'll let the new caretakers fill you in with further details as to when
the file will be back "on-line".

I suppose I shoula' created a "farewell" note for people to use a long
time ago (considering how many people are leaving the company these
day), but I didn't. Now it's my turn to say goodbye, so I'm invoking
"departing moderator's privilege" :-) and sticking my note here.

Anyway, so long folks. I hope all of our paths cross in the
not-too-distant future. I still don't know where I'm going yet, or even
what part of the country I'll be in. However, I've set up an account on
Internet on "world", so regardless of where I go, you can contact me if
you need to. My internet address is:

    		[email protected]

(from DEC, you'd enter the address as DECWRL::"[email protected]")

Also, here's another address where you can reach me:

    		Brian Markey
    		Permanent Wave Productions
    		P.O. Box 276 M.O.
    		Shrewsbury, MA 01545

    		tel: 508.842.4422

I've enjoyed knowing all of you and will miss the wonderful debates,
conversation and information of the MUSIC notesfile!!!

    Take care,
