1.1 | Creating New Topics | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:09 | 24 |
| CREATING NEW TOPICS
o Before starting a topic (i.e., new note), first check that
no one else has already started a topic on the same thing.
For example, don't start a new topic to reply to someone's
statement in a currently-active topic. See the SEARCHES
section for details on how to find existing topics.
Multiple topics on the same discussion may be moved
or deleted at the moderator's discretion.
o To make it easier for people to find the subject you
are writing about, use descriptive titles and keywords.
Avoid cutesy obscure titles like "The Walrus"
for a note about Paul McCartney.
Remember that people search through the directory of titles
to find notes. For that reason you should always be sure
to include the most logical search target (like "McCartney")
in the title.
o After creating your new topic, you might wish to create a
keyword for it, or possibly add the topic to an existing
keyword. (See SEARCHES section for description of keywords).
|
1.2 | FINDING TOPICS | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:11 | 46 |
| SEARCHES
There are two major methods of searching: keywords and title searches.
o Keyword searches
VAX Notes provides an index like facility for notes. You may
create an index entry, which is called a "keyword", with any
name and attach it to any set of topics or replies. For example,
a BEATLES keyword might contain entries for all notes pertaining
to the Beatles.
To find a topic using a keyword search, you type:
SHOW KEYWORD xxxx/full
where xxxx is the keyword (BEATLES for example). You can use
wildcard characters, which in fact is a good idea. For example,
"BEATLES" will only match BEATLES, but *BEATLE* will match almost
any conceivable variation (BEATLE, BEATLES, THE_BEATLES, etc.)
The SHOW KEYWORD command will show you all the keywords that match
what you specify, as well as the notes associated with each keyword.
To add to an existing keyword simply type:
ADD KEYWORD xxxx n.m
Anyone can create a keyword in MUSIC, but please use the SHOW
KEYWORDS command first, to see if an appropriate keyword has already
been created. We don't need a bunch of similar keywords (e.g., like
"DRUM", "DRUMS", "DRUMMERS", "DRUMMING").
o Directory searches
Note 2.LAST always contains a recent directory of topics in
MUSIC. Extract this note into a buffer and then use the editor
search command to find keywords that might be expected in note
titles relating to your subject.
Please note that the DIR/TITLE="xxx" command should be avoided.
Extracting a note and searching the buffer is MANY TIMES faster
than the DIR/TITLE command, which is not only very slow, but uses
a significant amount of resources on the host machine, and network
resources.

1.3 | LIBEL | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:13 | 58 |
| LIBEL
When writing notes in this conference, please avoid making comments
about individuals or businesses that could be construed as being
slanderous.
Everyone by now must be familiar with the sad state of the particular
area of law known as "liability". I have been told by several
expert moderators with direct experience with the personel and legal
departments that any statement made in a DEC sponsored conference
may incur liability for Digital. Digital would be, effectively,
publishing slanderous remarks.
Defining "slander" is a very hard task. In general, you should
avoid making comments about individuals, businesses, etc. that:
1) are mostly insulting in nature
2) offer maliciously worded negative opinions
3) offer subjective conclusions as fact
4) endanger the reputation or livelihood of a person, business,
group, etc.
I know this sounds restricting and perhaps unfair, but notesfiles
are allowed by the good will of those in authority out of DEC.
It would be hard for them to justify their existence to stockholders
based on any contribution to the company. Our responsibility as
noters is to appreciate their overlooking this and try our best
not to allow notesfiles to create problems for DEC.
This means that at times, we may have to COMPROMISE.
For example, if some store sells you a 57 Les Paul guitar for $2700
that turns out to be a $125 86 Hondo they painted to look like a
Les Paul, and then won't give you your money back, unfortunately
this is not the right place to lash back at them even though they
may well deserve it.
This does not mean that everything in here has to be positive, but
it means that you must be careful and very low-key when making negative
statements about others.
If you have any questions in this area, I'd be glad to answer them
in the least incapable way that I am able. If someone wishes to
discuss the issue in MUSIC, please start a separate note.
Do not reply to this note.
Please believe that my only motivation here is to keep the MUSIC
conference healthy and active. I think this liability stuff is
nonsense but it's a fact of life.
"Some folks will insist on ramming their heads through a
brick wall while others are content just to walk around
it."
Let's try to walk around this liability nonsense.

1.4 | HOST SYSTEM RULES | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:19 | 19 |
| HOST SYSTEM RULES
TIMBRE (MUSIC's host system) is a VAXstation 3100. As systems go
it's more than adequate but certainly finite in terms of system
resources.
There are no particular access rules for TIMBRE, but please consider
the following:
1) Avoid frequent access (every few hours) to the file during the
work day.
2) If you type in something that is dated information, delete
it once it becomes out-dated (equipment is sold, concert
has past, etc.)
3) You might want to consider deleting things of limited value
after awhile (like the standard short witty response).
|
1.6 | OBJECTIONS | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:22 | 22 |
| OBJECTIONS
If you have an objection to something posted here that you feel
is inappropriate, please contact me via mail.
The most common case is when someone feels they have been insulted.
PLEASE READ THIS.
If you feel you've been insulted by someone in this
conference, the RIGHT response is to contact me
and tell me thatt you feel insulted by this note and
feel it should be deleted.
Striking back or airing your objection is NOT the right response.
MUSIC is for notes about music.
Retaliations turn into unwanted notes wars between two folks that
bore everyone else. Typically both sides claim that the other
side struck first. To me, it doesn't matter. If you wrote a note
that insulted someone, you are in the wrong. There's no condition
under which that is acceptable.

1.8 | WHERE CAN I FIND... | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Wed Oct 09 1991 17:36 | 133 |
| NOTEWORTHY MUSIC TOPICS
There are some special topics worth noting:
Note # Title Keyword
------ ----- -------
1 Introduction to MUSIC
Contains general guidelines for MUSIC. You're reading it...
2 Directory listing DIRECTORY
Always contains a recent directory listing of MUSIC. You
should use this note (along with keywords) for searching
for a particular topic. The DIR command is very slow and
uses up a significant amount of resources.
3 The Noters NOTERS
A who's who of DEC music lovers.
4 Concert announcements CONCERT_ANNOUNCEMENTS
The place for announcements of upcoming concerts. Please do not
create new topics for concert announcements. They are hard to
find the second time and clutter the directory listing. The moderator
will delete the announcements some time after the concert date.
5 Who's gigging where WHO_IS_GIGGING_WHERE
The (only) place to announce concerts given by DEC musicians.
Please do not create new topics for this. It is much easier
for people to find your announcement if they KNOW it's always
in this note.
6 For Sale FOR_SALE
The (only) place to put a "for sale" ad. Also contains guidelines for
ads.
7 Moderation Issues MODERATION_ISSUES
The place to discuss issues involving the moderation of this
conference.
8 Want Ads WANT_ADS
The (only) place to put a "wanted" ad. Also contains guidelines for
ads.
9 MUSIC-related Conferences RELATED_CONFERENCES
Announcements of other conferences on music related subjects
(GUITAR, DRUMS, COMMUSIC, RECORDS, etc.)
10 Who's Who in MUSIC WHO_IS_WHO
The standard Vax Notes "Who's Who?" note
11 Musicians Wanted
Intended for musicians looking for bands and bands looking for
musicians.
12 Jam Sessions JAMS
The place for announcing jam sessions.
13 Music Instructors Inquiries
We tend to get a lot of notes asking for references on music
instructors. It's been observed that recommendations given
in previous requests could satisfy the requirements given
in new requests. Therefore this note has been designated for
all such requests.
14 Clinic Announcements
This note is reserved for announcements of upcoming clinics.
These are the special events that music stores and music schools
put on. They are generally of the nature of hearing a lecture
and conversing with a well-known musician, product demos, etc.
15 Lyric/Sheet Music Requests
Requests for sheet music or lyrics. All responses via E-mai
please...
16 My band/orchestra/group/act etc.
Tell us about your band...
17 Moderator Announcements
The moderator will post notes about system availability, etc. here.
18 Music Theory: Comments and Questions
Use this note to find the fingering for that elusive lowered-
supertonic augmented eleventh chord.
19 Song/Recording Info and Locater Service
If you want to know who wrote or recorded a song or if you're
trying to locate a recording, use this note.
20 Music Equipment Questions and Information
Can we talk... pianos to harmonizers. Go for it.
21 Club/Concert Venue Information
How do I get to the Paradise? Ask here...
22 MUSIC-related Services Information
Where can I buy a widget for my gafloozle? Ask here...
23 The MUSIC Soap Box

right note.
24-30 Reserved
These low numbered notes are reserved for future use (or, as it
says in the manual in regard to the unlabeled "mystery jack" on
the back of my Roland sampler: "Reserved for a future software".

1.9 | Getting at "old" MUSIC stuff | WRKSYS::MARKEY | Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging | Fri Oct 11 1991 15:19 | 13 |
| MUSIC V4 has become the version of the MUSIC conference you access by
default. If you want to get at MUSIC V3, then create an entry in your
notebook:
ADD ENTRY MUSIC_V3 /FILE=TIMBRE::MUSIC_V3
OPEN MUSIC_V3
This will get you *read-only* access to V3, which you can use for
extracting notes or locating old discussions. After an adequate period
of time, V3 will be backed up and removed from the system...

By way of introduction, I am the Corporate Personnel Policy Manager.
Part of my responsibility includes providing interpretation of Digital's
Personnel Policy, including the Personnel Policy 6.54. I would greatly
appreciate your assistance in posting the attached memo from John Sims in
the Notes files you moderate, and as many other Employee Interest Notes
Files as possible. Please give me a call if you have any questions.

Subject: A message to employee interest notes file users
A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEE INTEREST NOTES FILE USERS
Over the last few months I have received a number of complaints
from employees, and individuals outside of the company about
material communicated in electronic mail systems and posted in
various employee interest notes files. After reading some of this
material it is clear that a reminder about appropriate comment and
behavior in these systems is necessary.
First, and most critically; the electronic mail systems and notes
files are company facilities subject to normal workplace rules of
conduct. As such, the same rules that govern conduct and comment
in any other Digital workplace apply with equal weight in these
systems. Stated simply, if you wouldn't say something in a
Digital business meeting, you shouldn't say it in electronic mail
or notes. PERIOD.
Statements that attribute improper, illegal or immoral motives or
actions to others; statements that cast aspersions on the
character or integrity of others or that amount to libel or
slander are not permitted. PERIOD. In this regard, it does not
matter whether the individuals subject to the comment are elected
public officials or directors of organizations disfavored by the
author. There is no "Public Figure" exception in these systems.
Comments of a sexual nature are not acceptable whether they are
about the author or directed at others. Similarly, comments that
degrade, devalue or discriminate against others are also
prohibited.
Neither the notes conferences nor electronic mail should be used
to solicit other employees. This prohibition covers efforts to
solicit employees for personal or political gain, to sell or
market goods or services (except authorized marketplace or
discount conferences) and efforts to solicit employees to take
action, sign petitions or support particular causes or candidates.
Finally, employees should remember that it is never appropriate to
spend working time in employee interest notes for non-work
purposes. Personal or entertainment activities in these notes
files should be limited to assigned break times, lunch time and
before or after business hours.
Employee interest notes files and conferences provide an
electronic forum to share ideas and opinions about matters of
common interest. In supporting these conferences, the company
understood that there would be occasions where employees would
disagree on issues being discussed, but we believed and continue
to believe it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.
Personnel Policy 6.54, Proper Use of Digital Computers, Systems
and Networks provides further information about appropriate
conduct and comment in these systems. Employees who fail to meet
these expectations, or who use company computer systems in ways
that are contrary to the letter or spirit of that policy are
subject to Corrective Action and Discipline up to and including
the termination of their employment.
The moderators of these conferences, along with your system
managers, personnel representatives and the Personnel Policy
Manager are all available to answer any question you might have
about appropriate use of these systems.
Please feel free to forward this memo to other Digital notes
files and conferences.

1.7 | ADVERTISEMENTS | CUPMK::T_THEO | Look Twice, Save a Life | Thu Sep 09 1993 12:46 | 23 |
| ADVERTISEMENTS
All advertisements must go in either the "For Sale" note (topic #6)
or the "Want Ads" note (topic #8). "Ticket sales" note (topic #27).
These notes contain the guidelines for such ads. Notes not following
these conventions may be deleted, possibly without notice.
MUSIC is a very active file. I have very little time to write an
explanation for each ad that violates the rules. I think it's a
reasonable expectation for folks to check out the conference guidelines
before creating an ad.
Generally I will only not notify folks if I feel they have made
no attempt to find out the conference guidelines. The main things
I will probably delete (or move) without notification are:
1) Ads not placed in the "Want Ads" or "For Sale" notes.
2) Responses to ads in the "Want Ads" or "For Sale" notes.
(Such response should be done by MAIL, not REPLY.)
3) NO SCALPING Tix... FACE VALUE ONLY (NO AGENTS FEES)
