586.49 | Fabric sources in Southern NH? | WMOIS::LYONS_S | | Mon Apr 07 1997 15:59 | 10 |

Wanted: Source for Fabrics in the Southern N.H. area. I can't believe
that Walmart and Jo-Ann's Fabrics (near MVP in Nashua) are the only
sources for fabric in the area. I am trying to find western (actually
aztec style) prints to make western shirts. Any pointers?
Thank you in advance!

| You could try Martin's House of Cloth on Route 3 in Bedford, NH. I think
they've got a fairly big selection though they may not have what you are
looking for. Its been quite a while since I've been there. They are in the
yellow pages in the Nashua phone book under "fabric".

586.51 | There are places, just not in your back yard. :-) | SMURF::BINDER | Errabit quicquid errare potest. | Tue Apr 08 1997 10:39 | 38 |
| Wal-Mart deals primarily in cheap - by which I mean junky - fabrics,
and I have better things to do with my money and time than waste them
on that sort of stuff.
Jo-Ann's stock, both in the West Side Plaza store and in the T.J. Maxx
Plaza store in Tyngsborough, tends to the more ordinary as well; they
are more interested in catering to the crafty types, and their fabric
section rarely has really good stuff. (But I snagged a *gorgeous* pale
blue Art Deco-looking silk jacquard in the West Side Plaza store last
week, $12.95 a yard! With a deep blue acetate satin for the back,
it's going to be a great summer vest.)
Martin's House of Cloth is excellent. Stock is reliable, the people
are knowledgeable. Some of the designer cottons are to die for.
If you're into rummaging, you can try Levine's, on Pine Street in
Manchester. It's a rambling old frame warehouse, looks ready to cave
in at a moment's notice. Prices are good to very good. The stock is
remnants and remainders - not that it's all bits and squidges, there
are an abundance of bolts and rolls, but there's a lot of turnover and
it's consequently a hit-or-miss proposition. I *love* digging through
their stuff and coming up with bargains.
A good source for nice fabrics is the Mill End Store in Keene. They
have a fine selection of high-end stuff, including Laura Ashley and
Liberty of London; I've gotten some wonderful wool challis and silks
there.
A somewhat offbeat fabric store is Joseph's Coat on Main Street in
Peterborough. Interesting stuff, but a very small store. Worth the
trip, however, for the unusual items - they used to carry the full line
of Folkwear patterns before it disappeared.
There is always the Mecca of fabric stores, G Street Fabrics in
Rockville, MD, but that's rather a hike. I usually get there only
every other year, and I often drop the better part of $500 on fabrics,
often on spec. It's worth the hajj, believe me; the linens alone
occupy three or four aisles that are probably 25 feet long.

| If you're looking for all cotton fabric and you're in the area you
might stop at Covered Bridge on 101A in Nashua. They carry quilters
cotton's and may have what you want, they have a pretty nice (but
expensive) selection.

There's a southwest clothing and "stuff" store on Lowell Rd.

know a source. I think it's called Southwest Connections.

Thank you all for the replies so far. Unfortunatley some of the
suggestions are a little further than I planned to travel for a couple
of yards of material that the location may not even have.
I disagree with the opinion on Martin's House of Fabrics. At least as
far as the opinion on the staff's courteousness goes. I found two of
the sales people to be rather rude. I was also disappointed and a
little upset at what happened. I had called and talked to someone
about their selection of Western/Southwestern materials and wether or not
the amount of selection was worth a trip up there (especially toting
two little ones under the age of 2!) The woman said they had plenty to
choose from and when I arrived, to ask for her she would help point
them out. Well, I dragged the little ones up there and there was but
ONE bolt of Southwestern fabric and two or three that she considered
Southwestern (but in my opinion they were just bright colors!). And
then she proceeded to say to me that I didn't request information on
certain things in our phone conversation when I had. Needless to say,
if someone is going to call my a liar....I am never going to go back
there!
Thank you also to the person who sent info about the store in hudson
(Sara's SouthWestern Connection). They do not carry bolts of fabric
but at this late date, I may venture in and purchase the two shirts
rather than make what I wanted!
Thank you again for the suggestions.

| my wife, who was from texas years back and sews wedding and formal wear
again, says "you can't get there from here." ;) she uses Martin's a
bit and was just commenting a few days back that the selection of good
non-craft fabrics has dwindled to next to nothing. Even mail order is
very limited it seems. Very few individuals have much of a desire to
obtain quality. Seems to be that way with just about everything now.

586.59 | Colored foil? | WMOIS::LYONS_S | | Wed May 28 1997 13:58 | 13 |
|
I was wondering if anyone knew of a resource where I could get colored
foil that is used to wrap around potted plants. You know, like
florists use. I have a bridal shower that I am planning and we decided
to use potted plants as centerpieces and would like to put a bow in
them and use colored foil to wrap the pot (using the color of the
bridesmaid's dresses. I am not getting the plants from a florist
therefore would have to wrap them myself. I have called a couple of
florists and they were not willing to sell me just the foil.
Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

586.60 | A few ideas | FOUNDR::DODIER | Double Income, Clan'o Kids | Wed May 28 1997 14:24 | 9 |
| The florists probably get them from wholesale suppliers
(nurseries). Perhaps calling a supplier in your area may yield
better results.
One other thought is to try calling a craft/hobby shop. They may
carry it also. If all else fails, I've seen foil-like material at fabric
stores. Maybe this would work in a pinch ?

| You could use regular foil with colored plastic wrap over it. Any supermarket
should have what you need.
|
586.63 | | KOOLIT::BLACHEK | | Thu May 29 1997 13:52 | 8 |
| I don't think foil with plastic wrap will have the look she wants --
festive and pretty.
If you can't find foil, I'd get some heavier type fabric, cut it out
with pinking shears and tie the fabric on with ribbon. That would look
nice and be fairly inexpensive.

colored foil in craft and hobby stores.

The Party Time store om West Hollis street in Nashua - near Soucy's

used under large cakes. They have a number of colors and sell it by
