842.0. "La Primavera '97" by ULYSSE::virenq.vbe.dec.com::ULY1::HEMMINGS (Lanterne Rouge) Fri Mar 21 1997 11:02

We're off for the Annual Milan-San Remo watching and pizza-eating Saturday tomorrow.

For me that means leave my car at Antibes early and ride off along the coast to XXmiglia to meet
the other idle toads who will drive my car to Dolceaqua (can't really complain because it means I
get a lift back). Can I face the Grande Corniche I ask myself? Hopefully we shall be able to find
the pizzeria at Baiardo which is supposed to have moved 500 metres into the village, no doubt we
shall meet the German vacanciers with their mega-expensive veloes again.

Sad that Gianni Bugno won't riding (according to today's L'Equipe), what will his fan club do??
It looks like an open race again, there was an article about last years' youthful winner Colombo,
who says he will try to win again - fat chance sez me. I'll stick my neck out and go for Steels
or Musseuw. Much as I would like to see Cipollini win - I can't believe he can get up the Poggio
at an average of 40 kph (I kid you not!!).

Wait another 2 or 3 years for Steels. His 4 stage wins in Paris-Nice have been a great
achievement and very good news for Belgian cycling. But I don't
think he is already able to follow in the first group on the Poggio,
especially after such a long race.

My bets is on Museeuw. After the World Championships of Lugano he is
now convinced that he can also climb, and certainly the Poggio should
be no problem. Of course he will have to beat the likes of Jalabert and
    Bartoli.

And what about Pantani ? I heard that he is very motivated.

According to VeloNews, Jalabert was not hurt seriously despite the heavy
landing. I don't recall for certain, but I think Museeuw came away OK as well.

Tom,

They had much luck - both are o.k.
