width to 80 columns so that us chaps on older technology can read them
all?

| Sorry, I don't have the time. You only got the prologue and then I had to fly off
to Geneva, so you may get the Wednesday stage report if you're lucky.
What I will do is to post directly from Minitel which is more like Telex...

La "course au soleil" mrite bien son
nom. C'est encore sous un trs beau
temps que Pascal Chanteur a remport
la 3e victoire de sa carrire. A 29 ans,
le coureur de l'quipe Casino confirme
son bon dbut de saison. Chanteur a
rgl un petit groupe de 7 chapps,
parmi lesquels on trouvait Dufaux et
Jalabert, l'origine de l'chappe. Le
Mazamtain conserve et mme conforte s
maillot blanc de leader, Steels s'tant
retrouv dans un premier peloton arriv
avec un retard de 14" sur les chapps.
The "race to the sun" really lived up to its name, and in very fine weather Pascal
Chanteur took his 3rd career victory. At 29 yrs old, the rider from the Casino team
confirmed his good early season form. Chanteur beat a small group of 7 which contained
Dufaux and Jalabert who started the break. The Mazemetain keeps and increases his hold
on the leader's white jersey, Steels found himself in the peloton 14" behind the break.

Jalabert. Ce dernier reste en blanc et
poursuit sa chasse aux bonifications
(6" en cours de route et 4" l'arrive)
Thierry Gouvenou (Big Mat-Auber 93) a
Steels.
3rd win in 5 days for Tom Steels, who beat Cipollini & Jalabert in the
sprint this time. The latter remains in white and continues his chase
for time bonuses (6" during the day & 4" at the finish). Thierry Gouvenou
(Big Mat-Auber 93) was active during the stage, alone for 94km before
being caught with 15 to go by Tom Steels' Mapei's.
----------------------------------------
premiers jours. J'avais de bonnes sensa-
tions. Le Ventoux ? Je ne suis pas du
tout inquiet. A chaque fois que la
route grimpe, je me sens l'aise".
Tom Steels: "Le sprint a t beaucoup
dente. J'ai craint que "Cipo" me remonte
Jalabert: It's best that the bonuses are in my pocket. It was a good
day, and I sprinted at the finish because I felt better than previous
days. I'm feeling good. The Ventoux? - I'm not at all worried - each
time the road climbs I feel more at ease.
Steels: The sprint was much harder than the other days. No doubt I
am paying for my previous efforts - I was afraid that Cipo would get
past me.

8 tapes.
Tom Steels showed he was definitely the fastest in the Paris-Nice
peloton. Sunday on the Prom des Anglais and in brilliant sunshine,
the Belge beat the entire bunch giving him his 4th victory in 8
stages.
In the afternoon, Ekimov took the CLM. This was 20km of flat by the
seaside between Antibes and Nice with a tailwind. I would say Ekimov
has already filled his obligations to his new team, US Postal.
Jalabert, 7th in the excercise, took his 3rd successive victory joining
Merckx and Zoetemelk on the victory roll (Oy wot about Kelly then? -
maybe they mean as triple winners).
The French of course are in raptures with Luc Alphand and their rugby
team, and see no possibility of Jalabert being beaten in next week's
Milan - San Remo. If I was an Italian racer - I'd be working on the
combines this week!!
----------------------------------------
Laurent JALABERT (vainqueur):
"Physiquement, ce Paris-Nice n'a pas t plus dur que les autres.
Compte tenu du parcours, Il l'tait peut-tre mme un peu moins. Mais
in n'a pas t pour autant vident gagner. Le chrono du premier jour
m'a mis en confiance. Psychologiquement, il a beaucoup pes. Ensuite
----------------------------------------
He said: "Physically, this P-N was no harder than the others. Bearing
in mind, the course profile, perhaps it was a little less hard in fact,
but even so it was not so easy to win it. The first day's chrono gave
me confidence which weighed heavy in my favour. Finally, everything
took off and it was very difficult to succeed on the Ventoux stage
which required considerable effort. However, one does not win Paris-Nice
while smoking one's pipe (French colloquialism which I leave readers
to translate).
